Are all gamers big pawed palm style mousers?

My post in my last thread led me to this question

Over the years I've been through dozens of mice for gaming. The huge majority, especially those labeled as gaming mice have always been to big for my hand size and finger tip/grip gaming style. It makes me wonder about the average PC gamer. Are all of you big pawed and/or palm gamers or are mouse manufacturers missing a whole different segment of PC gamers?

I've owned in recent history.... Logitech G9, Razer Deathadder and Lachesis, NZXT Avatar, and now the Razer Imperator.

Those that have come closest to perfection for me.

- G9- It's just a tad to wide but also the pads wore out much to quickly for what it cost.
- NZXT Avatar - Comfortable but the lazer can't compete with the Lachesis. I really hope they release an Avatar 2. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826292001

and the most comfortable mouse I can recall but unfortunately not a "gaming" mouse.

- Logitech MX310 - this mouse fit perfectly unfortunately it can't compete with gaming lazers/opticals. http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?item=N82E16826104136

Long story short. I'd pay $200 for a nice small quality gaming mouse designed for finger tip/grip gamers. Are you reading Razer, Logitech, etc. ;)

Never known anyone to use their palm.
I have a MX1000, pretty sizeable mouse, and I only use my finger tips to move it around, palm doesn't really touch it, back of hand/wrist is anchored to the mat behind it. Only fingers move.

Use a Razer Diamondback myself. Most Razer mice are on the smallish side. I essentially rest the tips of my fingers on the buttons and sides and use it that way.

actually funny you say that you find the gaming mice too big. actually i find 90% of all mice to be too small, as if they were designed for women and kids. i actually use the claw grip more than anything and yes i have "shrek" hands according to my daughter. currently find my mx revolution to be the best compromise at the moment.

I really like my Microsoft Habu, it uses Razer technology but has a shape similiar to the old Microsoft Intelimouse

Agreed.

Don't get me wrong, if I'm just milling about or doing data entry, I could care less what the mouse shape is... but if I'm gaming or doing graphics work, I need a good sized mouse with some heft. G5 with all the weights in works nicely (I could stand for it to be a bit larger though). I also "Claw" the mouse, like most others, so no palm action.

I have about average sized man hands (think: palming a basketball), nothing freakish (think: Randy Moss). So no, not really big pawed. Just average.

Ah, theres the issue. I can't remotely palm a basketball. So my hands aren't average sized for a guy. Small girly hands here. At least they don't look feminine. ;)

I normally don't care about the size either when performing mundane tasks but when gaming I'd wish I didn't have to mutate my hand to whatever mouse I'm using.

I'm using the NZXT Avatar right now on my laptop and its near perfect. A little long but the rear end is slim allowing my thumb and pinky to sit comfortably, a main issue with most mice. That and my thumb not being able to reach the front left side button without stretching my whole hand to reach it. Unfortunately I score way better with the Lachesis/Imperator laser so I used in recent history when gaming.

thanks for the feedback. Think I'm done with this thread. Just wanted to toss that out there to figure out what the deal was. Now I know. I'll never have a perfect gaming mouse that will fit my hand confortabley since I'm abnormal. LOL :)

When I used smaller mice the claw grip was better but was uncomfortable. When I got my Razer Mamba mouse, I switched to the palm grip but I move the mouse with my fingers, not my arm. I have large hands and the Mamba feels great. I don't have to reach for buttons or rest my hand after a long gaming session.

i only use logitech, they are the only ones that fit my hands from the mx580 to my g series.

Have you ever seen the Microsoft Sidewinder mouse? I don't have large hands by any means and it is perfectly sized. Actually, most people who use it complain that it is too large, which I find odd.

I have smaller hands and I too have been searching for the "it" mouse for me. I wanted to like the Deathadder but it gave me terrible cramps. the Mx518 shape stretched the gap between my middle and ring fingers. I got a SS Xai recently but it was too big and also stretched the gap b/w my two fingers. The G3 was nice but the tracking was crap for low sensitivity.

The Ikari Optical is nice, but its more for palming so the ring finger rest can get annoying in tense moments. The Kinzu is supposed to be smaller than the Xai so I look forward to trying it out, but I am wary of its positive acceleration issue. I'm also going to try the Razer Abyssus, I suggest you look into these two mice in particular.

Oh, and for reference my hand measures about 6 1/2 " from the bottom of my palm to the tip of my middle finger.

I just got my Abyssus in, it's a nice little mouse. It's definitely a claw grip mouse, I get ring finger fatigue after awhile due to the enlarged shape towards the front of the mouse so I may go back to my Ikari. I do better in games with it though. Same sensor as the Deathadder too with little to no drift control.

I'm going to try out the Kinzu next. Sensor issues aside, I'm hoping it'll be the "it" mouse for me.

EDIT: I got the Kinzu in, and the shape is great! It's essentially a tiny Xai. Much smaller than I expected. I got used to the Abyssus so it's down to either or. Kinzu has a better shape while the Abyssus has a better sensor. (Can't turn the stupid light off though) I really suggest you try these mice. The Kinzu's prediction is REALLY annoying though... It heavily locks your aim down to either straight X-axis or Y-axis so making a circle in paint looks like a rounded square. I'm using the Abyssus for this reason,

I have been on a never ending quest for the perfect mouse. and so far the only one that I have been able to keep for any length of time is the G5.

I liked the way the Mamba felt, but there settings utility was crap. and my pinky dragged around like a broken limb. it needed to be just a tad bit larger for me. I still try to use it from time to time.

I have freakishly large hands and they make these Gaming mouses with such narrow sides. which will cause my hand to cup which will result in cramps.

I have debated on getting the G9x . but I think the mouse is to short for me. I'm dreading the day my G5 gives up the ghost.

I do think the G9x has the right Idea on having interchangeable grips. for different hand styles. but the wide grip doesn't do me any good when the mouse is so short.

I'm kind of done for a while. Spending money on mouses and just recycling them to another computer in the house once my hand cramps up

So.... the quest for me continues.

I loved my old copperhead mouse which was a claw grip. I now have a G500 and just cant get comfortable with it. I find that i almost have to palm the G500 because of its bulky size and therefore am not used to it and cant game comfortablly.

I use the Logitech G9 and find it just about perfect. I do not have to palm it. I use my fingertips to move it around.

I've been using the Imperator for about 3 weeks now and have become accustom to it. Meaning the Lachesis it replaced has an aweful hump in the rear that I had become accustom to. My hand has returned to a more normal position with the Imperator. ;)

If it were just a "tad" smaller (width) and if I could slide the adjustable thumb buttons back to where the front is where the back is now it'd be perfect. Guess what I need is one of those laptop mice designed with gaming mice features. :D

Oh well I'm scoring very well with it in FPS and isn't that what matters most. The tracking of the laser Razer uses in the Lachesis and Imperator work extremely well for me. Especially when pulling off head shots in the distance and I'm not talking about with just a sniper rifle. ;)

@ samduhman. Im curious if by chance you have ever had the chance to use the G5. and if so . could you tell me if the size of the Imperator is close to the G5. if so I might give the Imperator a try.

it's hard to tell from pictures on the exact size

+1, my MX Revo is still to small for me, if I palm it, my fingertips drag on the pad...

I've run into the same sort of conundrum. I'm currently using an OCZ Equalizer. I find it more than enough to be competetive with this hardcore "I win money by playing this game" gamers and their fancy gaming mice. The Equalizer is a 2500DPI dual-laser mouse with a DPI adjustment button, 2 side buttons for switching weapons, "triple threat" button that apparently fires 3 shots with one click (I've given up using it since its based on timing and in gears pc you still only get one shot off with the shotgun with it)... its shaped more like a standard HP/Dell stock laser mouse but acts like a gaming mouse. Even OCZ's Behemoth I couldn't get comfortable with so I dunno how people are using those massive ones...

Interesting Indeed. But , All the mechanical moving parts = More chance of something breaking.

I have had trouble finding mice that are big enough for me, its funny though that you have owned all of the mice that I would consider larger.

You really should look at all of the other Razer mice, the deathadder and Mamba are the only mice they make they is for larger hands. I have the diamondback, lachesis, and salmosa and they are all too small.

You should also take a look at the Kinzu from Steel series, it is designed for smaller hands.

I have been running a logitech mx510 for several years and to me it is th emost comfortable mouse. I have purchased numerous other models for my laptop and I can;t seem to find any that fit like this one does to my hand. It may be due to me just getting comfortable with it over so many years.

an mx518 is exactly the same shape, but has a better engine :)
