Eyefinity with different size monitors ?

You have all seen my Eyefinity thread I am sure with my 3 - 24" Dell2408WFP's, they are 1920x1200res each with a grand total now of 5760x1200 resolution.

Was wondering though, for my main/center screen if I can swap in my awesome display I really like my 27" Dell 2707WP, it is also the same res as the other monitors of 1920x1200. I have that one on my upstairs family computer, but how would that look in the center with the two sides the 24" displays ? I like the larger 27" look in WoW, even though same resolution as the other 24", it seems to be a little nicer ?

My main reason is, it seems after a week of Eyefinity gaming, and mainly WoW, that I still look at the center/main display by far the most, and the two sides are just there for glancing at once in awhile, and obviously they really help with immersion factor and really bring the game world to life like never before. But how would that work ? I know size and pixel wise would be funked up, but just curious how that would look or even work ?
 
It will work.. things that are divided between the screens just won't line up as well as they do with 3 24" monitors.
 
I guess I should just try it out and see ? For gaming it seems I still stare at the center screen by far the most, an the side screens are just there to throw you inside the game world for immersion, and help in shooters to see enemies approaching from the side ? But would rather have a slightly larger center screen, or even better three of the same 27" Dell of the one I already have :)
 
Well I tried it out, and actually I sort of like it, and might keep it this way. I have always loved this 27" Dell I bought last Christmas, very good colors and high quality image, and 3" large is noticeably cooler for gaming. This 27" display cost me a good grand+ last year too.

The only reasons this actually works in games, is because triple screen gaming still distorts the two side monitors, giving you that fish eye lens, so even with the three exact same Dell 2408WFP's, the sides still looked funky because of that distortion. So now a 27" in middle with two 24" on each side, actually does not look that bad at all, I always like the center monitor being the best one or largest if possible.

Visually there is a certain logic to having a larger center monitor at the same resolution, since that is where your attention will be focused. If all your displays have pivot capability you might try them in portrait orientation for 3600x1920.

Your brain is focusing on the center/main display it seems majority of the time, so I want my nicest display looking right at me :) The two sides are there for the immersion factor, not really meant to stare at per say during gaming. I think the sides for shooters are just to alert you too incoming bad guys, not really to turn your head and look at them in the side display and shoot form there, no you are supposed to then turn to have them in your main monitor, at least that's my opinion.

But I am pretty sure going to keep it setup this way now.

Thats a slick looking setup there with wow. Next upgrade is going to be a pita. New cpu/mobo/ram/videocard/another monitor. :S

My pleasure being the guinea pig :) My opinion would be different if triple surround gaming was truly the exact same aspect ratio and FOV (field of view) stretched correctly across all 3 displays, but the games just don't do that. Even the Matrox TH2G device, had the same issues, the fish eye lens, and distorted side views. The main problem is because game developers never expected such crazy and extreme wide resolutions, so the games don't have the settings yet to display it 100% accurately. At least that is my opinion.

So for now, I would rather have one awesome monitor as the main/center, and just throw in 2 cheaper or lesser monitors on the sides, because you really never stair at the sides for too long while gaming, most of your gaming your eyes are still focused on the front/main monitor. The sides do really help though, don't get me wrong it is awesome for the immersion factor and throwing you in the game world like never before, and for online shooters really help to pick out the other team a lot faster than with just one display.

My honest opinion, I wish I had 3 of these Dell 27" :cool: But I can't let one awesome monitor just sit on my Wifey's computer, when she could care less about the quality or high end monitor. To me 27" size for 1920x1200 seems perfect, 24" is too small in my opinion. But 30" is too large because will be a nightmare on the frames and smooth gaming.
 
I truly think now that triple surround would look best with a large center display in Landscape, and the sides smaller in Portrait. I bet the best Eyefinity setup if AMD allowed it to work would be 20" + 30" + 20" for a grand total of 4960x1600res. You would still have an awesome center monitor at 30", but flip the 1600x1200res 20" in portrait mode.

But for now I also think 3 - 27" look the best in Eyefinity, I just love the 27" for 1920x1200res, so much better than 24", call me picky I know :p
 
Ughh, why on earth would you run a 30" at 1920x1200? The reason I love my 30" is for it's pixel density, and if I have to run a game at lower res I usually do 1280x800 since it's the 2nd native resolution.
 
If money is no object, I highly suggest Eyefinity with 3 - 27" size monitors of 1920x1200res each. To me the 27" over 24" is big enough to be noticeable, call me picky, but the 27" just looks right and perfect.
 
It just dawned on me why I like the 27" size so much more than the 24" even though they are both the exact same resolution.

It is becaus with Eyefinity you need to push the whole thing back farther or sit back away from the Eyefinity setup so you can see it better, but then the center/main screen is pushed away more than normal and a little harder to see for 2d desktop and and normal computer usage. That's where the 27" comes in perfect to me, it is larger abd makes everything easier to see and read, and then for gaming even better.

But that's just my opinion as a computer geek enthusiast, I am no pro like Kyle or Brent, just giving an average mans experience with Eyefinity so far :)
 
personally, I'd want to be as close to all 3 monitors as possible.. to have the game surround me.

For me, the tops of a building being at a different height on two different monitors would really kill it for me.. being slightly off due to the lack of bezel management is ok, but I don't think I would like it if the difference were larger.


Also, you can run eyefinity on monitors of different resolutions.. but you'll be limited to the highest common supported resolution..

for instance... my viewsonic 24" is 1920x1080.. my roommate's 22" monitor is 1680x1050.. when I had the two in a displaygroup, the highest resolution I had was 3360x1050.. and things looked kind of "off" in terms of lining up with each other because the 1680x1050 pixels were spread out over a much wider area.

I was able to get mirror's edge running at 2048 by something.. and it looked good.. but the disjoint between the two halves of the picture was annoying to me.

It didn't take long to start ignoring the bezels, though.. I was looking right at them and they kind of faded out as I was focusing on both halves of the picture in front of me.
 
I think 3x HDTV's would be best eyefinity setup call me strange : D. 3x 32" at 4' surround gaming : D

I'm thinking of doing something like this with my HP LP3065. I was thinking about picking up two 24 or 27 inch screens to go next to my 30". I did some measurements and I just don't have the space, and I don't want to replace my desk (it's quite old and was inherited...). I can, however, fit two 22" screens which, in portrait mode, would match my HP nicely. I understand, of course, all the screens would need to run at the same resolution.

Can Eyefinity be configured to have the center in widescreen mode and the other two monitors in portrait?

Well I just pulled my middle 24" and replaced it with my 30". Wow...

The imersion factor has been increased in a way I can't even put into words. The extra size of the primary panel in combination with the horizantal FOV created by the side 24"s is just amazing. As been said already, the side panels are primarily for peripheral vision so the pixel pitch mismatch is a non issue.

Thanks OP for putting this idea in my head. This is fuckig great!

Notes: gaming at 19x12 on the 30" in an eyefinity group does not bother me at all. The fact that my entire field of vision is consumed by the game is something else. Also the ability to hotkey out of eyefinity and into a desktop profile where my 30" goes back to 25x16 has put back what I felt I was missing when downgrading from my 30 to three 24"s

all I can say is that a bigger center panel is a pretty cool thing to have when eyefinity gaming. I'm with the OP. My setup is gonna stay 24-30-24
 
So you are saying, that as long as I set my 2007FP in landscape, I should be ok to triple mon with Eyefinity?

Wait, do they have to be the same resolution?

The reason I ask is that the 3007 and the 2007 do not have any resolutions in common.

You could do that but keep in mind that the eyefinity display group defaults to the lowest common res between the 3 monitors. This would put your 30" @ 1600x1200. I'm not quite sure that would look too good, but you could give it a try.

What I did was sell my 2007fps and picked up 3 24"s for eyefinity. Kept my 30" though. This thread inspired me to pull the 30" out the closet to give it a try and I'm glad I did! If you have the $ and the deskspace, I'd highly reccomend selling off the 20"s and picking up a pair of 24"s. You won't regret it!
 
Shit.... last month I saw the the 3008 for $1200, and the 3007 for $1000. Should have bought them and suffered the consequences (wife).

And the 2008 would have given me the Display Port and everything... oh well... maybe a good thing.
 
Interesting to read your posts here; I'm facing a bit of a dilemma ... I use a Samsung 32" LED to game on, and also as my TV and BluRay playing screen ... I have a second monitor, a Dell 27" - 2707.

I'm really stuck. If I had my time over I would probably have not bought the Samsung, it's a great monitor, but I could have purchased two more Dell 27" screens for Eyefinity.

Right now I am debating a few options:

1: Keep using the Samsung 32" 1920x1080 and get a 2nd Dell 27 ... going for an Eyefinity configuation of 27/32/27 .... but the problem is I would have to downscale the resolutions on the side screens to 1920x1080 from their native 1920x1200.

2. Buing 2 more 27 inch LCD's (or perhaps 2 slightly smaller 25.5") ... using the Dell 27 as the primary, and having the Samsung LED as my 4th - dedicated TV / Video monitor. I'm not even sure this option is possible with Eyefinity - aren't I limited to three displays?

Reading some of the posts here I would LIKE to think that I could go with option one ... but from tinkering around with stretching WOW across screens, there is quite a discrepancy between the sides - 32" is a large screen.

I'd be really interested to hear some opionions, and even if some other HF crew have faced this situation and resolved it. I'm trying to get a good solution; that is most economical. Trying to fit it all in with my current hardware (the dell 27" and the samsung 32").

My EYEFINITY setup has a larger monitor in the center, flanked by two smaller. But all three run the same res of 1920x1200. It is Dell 2408WFP + Dell 2707WFP + Dell 2408WFP

Hi all,

I'd like to revise this thread to see how you all are doing with the larger center and if you still use it that way. I just got into eyefinity last week and started with 2 Acer 24" monitors and a new Asus 25.5 in the center. All three are 16:10 1920x1200. I found a 3rd matching Acer on ebay and snatched it up kind of cheap at $120. Now I can do bezel adjustment and its pretty neat to see everything line up and was planning on returning the 25.5....but I think I like the larger Asus 25.5 in the center. The larger sceen in the center of attention really makes a difference.

So you old timers, are you still using a larger in the middle? Do you miss not having the bezel adjustment feature since all monitors are not matching?

3 years later, anyone still using this setup?

I started my own thread a couple days ago, trying something close to what the OP did (cheaper thought) using my (2) 5:4 19" acer which have the same height as a 24" and either a 25/26/27" in center. It seems the setup which is closest (not perfect) in both PPI and physical vertical size would be 19/26/19. Of course it's not high end stuff, but a Mid end version of it.

Let me know what you think.
