Asrock 939 dual. Daughter card cpu?

Friend just gave me a Asrock 939 dual w/a64 3200. Nice drop off for sure.
Reading up on it, it was quite the board. Has both AGP and PCi-e slots. Weird but cool. Apparently you can use the AGP 8X, and PCi-e 16X at the same time for multi display. Decient BIOS for O/C as well.
The most unusual aspect of the board (if dual AGP and PCi-e wasn't odd enough) is it has a daughter card upgrade slot for a socket 939 to AM2 940. Checking out the daughter card it is at $30 USD. My curiosity is peaked. Anyone know what the newest tested CPU is? Could it do a PI or PII? And does the daughter card require DDR2 or would it just use the MB DDR that is already there?
I love this Frankenstein board and might want to upgrade it to its max just for the sport of it.
 
The daughter board has ddr2 dimm slots. You have to use ddr2 as am2 cpu's don't have ddr imc. There's a list of supported cpu's on asrock's website
 
Reminds me of the 754 board with the daughter card for 939.

But 939 with AM2 daughter card is quite far more interesting..
 
Still using one as my main rig with the AM2CPU board, running a X2 5000+ BE @ 3.1 and a HD4870.

Been a great system, started years ago with a Athlon 64 3700 San Diego running @ 2.75 with an X850XT agp card, than the AM2CPU board and the X2 5000+ BE, 2 Gigs DDR2 800, than a 8800GT and 4 Gigs ram and as a last upgrade, the HD4870.

Sure it won't run Crysis cranked but with most games its still ok. I am looking forward to a new build though. Will probably be an 8 core system by the time I can cough up the extra cash for it.
 
I actually had this board when it was new in 2006. I used it because I had an AGP Radeon 9800 and wanted to jump up to an X1800, and it was cheaper to get a PCIe card with this board than to go AGP. The board was solid, both in AGP and PCIe. Never did get around to getting the daughtercard for AM2 CPUs, though. I ended up using it as a stopgap motherboard and eventually got an nForce 500 series board when I went AM2.
 
Have this mobo, love it. Got it for the AGP/PCI transition and forgot about the daughter card thing. Might be fun to do. I'm running an opteron (165?), dual cpu in mine... have been for years. This mobo has so many options I don't know if it's outdated yet. Glad to hear it can run a 4870.
 
sold mine on ebay for 120 bought it brand new for 60. great board. Gets great overclock with pencil mod.

Haven't touched anything with a pencil since my Duron 700, which I magically made a Duron 1050! Oh the power in the day!!
 
Here's a forum link about trying to mod a bios for AM2+/AM3 Phenom/Phenom II support, don't think there has been great success yet, but it seems their still trying on occasion. I think the problem is that the Bios chip is too small to contain all the code and they are trying to hack out all the unnecessary Phenom code to get it to fit.

Nice links Sabrewulf... This old board has quite the cult following. And for good reason. Apparently the engineering for an upgradeable board is possible, just never given a damn about. Maybe this was the genius of the ULi team, too bad it never caught on eh! If the PI/PII stuff happens that just crazy longevity. Wow.
 
I had this board and loved it. The lack of final Vista drivers made me give it up though.
 
The latest official processor the AM2CPU board supports is the Athlon X2 6400+, at 3.2GHz, I believe. I run a 5000+ BE at stock in mine.

However, there is a sort of intermittent project going on at ocworkbench to mod the bios to support Phenom and Phenom IIs in it! There's a beta bios up but no one has reported trying it yet. I could if I had a Phenom.

I had this as my previous motherboard cause I was able to buy an AGP X800 XT PE for a great price, and the card was viable for a really long time. It was probably the most stable motherboard I ever owned. The only thing that never worked that well was the Sata2 port.
 
I also still have one of these guys at home, sitting in a box waiting for a daughterboard. Rock solid board for the price i paid. Actually glad I didn't sell it when it was going high on ebay.
 
Asrock always have done cool experimental things. They are the Oldsmobile of PC components.

I haven't been too impressed by the current range of AMD-based Asrock boards. Been using Asrock boards for my last few builds, but went with Gigabyte for my current main system as the Asrock board I was going to use simply wasn't functioning well (created some threads on it last year). It simply isn't worth it to go with Asrock now when Gigabyte offers much more attractive mainboards for the same price.

The AGP/PCIe combo aspect of this board was perfectly executed. I bought mine so I could ease the transition over from an AGP to PCIe video card without having to do the CPU/Mobo/Video card all at once. It was a very good overclocker too, especially since I only paid about $60 for it on Newegg.

The pencil mod for this board was to increase available vCore. There was a set of solder pads just north of the CPU which when crossed in a specific manner could bump up the vCore incrementally, above what the BIOS supported.

That ocworkbench forum has a lot more info on it. I always thought that forum was run like a communist country, but some of the mods and hacks for ASRock boards listed on there are impressive. Then again, its been made pretty clear the mods have connections with ASRock's engineering department based on how they always happen to come up with the mods before anyone else. Not to mention they always get their hands on ASR's newest hardware before other sites even know they exists.

My brother has this motherboard, I always wondered what that slot was for...

It has a PCI-E x 16 and an AGP slot, and a 2nd CPU slot for AM2? What the fuck... this board is ridiculous...

I do not believe that is possible. I have this board in my backup rigg, it's definitely a great board. The BIOS are very basic but, it's a rock solid board, taken everything I could throw at it and laughed at me!

for AM2 you will have to use DDR2. there are Jumpers that must be set to use the daughter card and the socket/DIMM on the PCB are then bypassed.

the AGP is 1.5v ONLY, so no 3.3v cards. unlikely that you would use, but a heads up none the less. I also highly doubt you can use AGP and PCIe at the same time. it will be like the CPU/RAM and either-or choice.

not a bad board for the time it was manufactured, as it allowed people to upgrade to 939 with the ability to use their AGP, and upgrade to PCIe as they wanted. same with AM2 and DDR-2. if nothing else a great attempt to help those looking to migrate within a small budget.

Intel used to do this kid of stuff in the 386/486 days. well for Intel silicon the 386SX/DX and 486SX, not with regard for graphic slots and RAM as there were no such thing as a dedicated graphic bus. but may systems with above mentioned CPU's had another socket that you could install an "overdrive" CPU i.e. 487. many of the 486SX were soldered into the MoBo and there was a vacant ZIF next to it for the "upgrade"

Those overdrive chips were dedicated co-processors, typically "math" for graphic enhancement, near as I recall (though I'm not sure what a dedicated co-processor for English Lit or Art History might have done). They weren't upgrade chip sockets. You didn't see mobos for a 286 that had a spare socket for a 386, nor a 486 for Pentium. Least none I've heard of. Closest is this Sata and maybe a Pentium to Pentium II daughtercard.

The AS Rock Sata II can run both AGP and PCIex, I've read, though it entailed more driver juggling than I've been willing to attempt so far.

No, the old socket is disabled when you use the daughter card. This is strictly for upgrade purposes only.

Intel marketed them as overdrive chips. The 487 (basically a 486DX FPU intact, enabled) the Pentium era "Overdrive" upgrades were solidified as market and store speak to consumers, but still just as half true as it was with the 80487..looks more like a zip code to me :rolleyes:.

but as i said before, the Asrock Dual MoBo in question will be an either or. you cannot use a s939 and AM2 at the same time. same goes for AGP and PCIe.

oh, the 386 used separate chips for FPU, it was silicon all by itself and its own socket. and the naming scheme was as horrible as the PR one.

my point being that you will not be able to use 2 CPU or both video buses at the same time. you are still bound to DDR-1 with 939 and DDR-2 with AM2




the analogy of overdrive went off a bit. i did have a Packard Bell 486SX, the CPU was soldered onto the MoBo, and the ZIF next to it was covered with an Intel Pentium Overdrive covering the socket. the chip they were referring to was a $$$ and because intel changed much from the time it was proposed to the actual silicon shipping the performance was crap. in fact the DX4 was a better choice for 486, if you wanted a Pentium, BUY one.

Although you're right about the CPU's (You physically have to change jumper blocks to enable the daughter card)...

I ran a 7800GTX PCIe at the same time as a 9700Pro AGP for tri monitor support on that board ;). You just have to install the drivers in a specific order that I cannot remember.

interesting. how was performance? could you 3d on each at the same time? i never tried as there was not enough CPU horsepower or RAM in the rig the board was in.

Hey anyone have a pic of this crazy MOBD, and I was just wondering were the daughter card connects to, is it just a PCI slot if so how is the transfer rate for information off and on the daughter card?
 
xxGriff, Didn't ever try 3D on my secondary card (9800 pro) but, think of it like this, my primary card (x1900gt) was only driving one monitor, It definitely helped fps on it. This was my main rig at the time and played a lot of shooters with it. As far as cpu and ram I had a x2 4200 @2.4GHz and 2GB of PC3200 ram. Kato don't have any pics but, the slot was a dedicated upgrade slot. It was located right above the PCI-E slot. Never owned the daughter card so can't help you with the transfer rates.
 
thanks. i ran a x1950Pro in the one i had. it was part of a trade. i only had it for a week or so and sold it. wish i would ran two card to see the results.

you can take a look at the MoBo here

the slot for the daughter card is a moded AGP slot, positioned to not allow a video card to be inserted once you install in a case. although i remember some hilarious moments working tech support seeing PCI video shoved into AGP slots :p
