Graphics card noise / buzzing / squealing / during high FPS

Hello, I would like to ask if you have experienced a squealing noise with your GTX 275 / GTX 285 card for example in Crysis intro or in Folding@home application, in ATITool (rotating cube) or in any other application where the card is reaching very high FPS rates?

If yes, could you please advise what is the manufacturer of the card and what is your PSU manufacturer? I do not know if it can be right but some people say that it can be PSU related. I have Thermaltake Toughpower 700 W.

I would like to buy one of these cards but am quite afraid that it would make this squealing noise.

Both my 260's squeal ...my sons 280 squeals
They are EVGA cards.
Im using a PCP&C 1kw PSU and he is using a PCP&C 750 watt PSU

Its nothing to worry about

pretty common issue, thanks to everyone who uses a reference design with cheap parts, for the cost of these cards a few cents or bucks per card to fix this would be nice once and for all, its been series after series for my nvidia cards

7800, 8800, 9800x2, gtx 280, gtx 295 have all done it
 
That is bad. Is there any GTX 275 or 285 that does not use a reference board design and that would not squeal?

I read in that post MSI claims theirs doesn't, but ive never used an MSI graphics card.

Hmm, you mean they claim they use non-reference design or that their card does not sqeal or both? :)

I had a MSI graphics card once and it was not a very good experience - it failed very soon.

I wish BFG/EVGA would just make premium cards with better air coolers and better components, the price premium for the life time warranty we pay isnt to bad, a few bucks more to not use the same card as every other manufacture wouldn't hurt

my GTX260s make noise sometimes still... like when I run vantage, at load time, and when I play STALKER CS... both are MSI, lol. Honestly I don't think that matters as all the reference cards and coolers are all made in the same place.. they only squeal at load time though, once things are loaded and going they seem to stop with the high pitched sounds..
 
Both of my BFG 285s do to an extent, one is worse than the other. My Evga 285s lightly squealed along with the Evga 280s before them, AND the Powercolor 4870 X2 before that was the worst by far. (Wow, 7 cards, and all worse than anything I've owned before somehow.)

They really squeal at load time or during bink videos because they're running at several hundred fps+. Using vsync can tame that, especially in really high fps games like Dead Space.

Hello Revenant - thanks for sharing your experience - would you know if your MSI GTX 260 cards are the improved Lightning version? Those should have the better capacitors and chokes etc and should not squeal.
 
Hi Romir - it looks like every single card is doing that :( Do they squeal in 2D as well? For example in Photoshop?

By the way is anyone out there who has GTX275/285 that does not squeal?
 
There was a answer to this problem in one users' sig.He suggested turning on on VS.Who knows.:)
 
The squeeling on my 285 is almost unbearable when I play non-intensive games (can be thousands of FPS at certain points in the game). Seriously, the sound was so bad I thought it was coming from a different room. For the record, I'm using a top tier power supply -- a Signature 850 , which is dead silent all the time.

So do the GTS series not squeel, and it's only on the high-end cards like the GTX series? I'm thinking about dumping my 285 (vanilla, EVGA brand for the record) for something cheaper and less performing, but without a squeel. Not sure if it's worth it for me at this point to sell my 285 and go with a cheaper solution when the end goal is to eventually just go to Larrabee next year. Everyone at the EVGA forums claims it's normal for the GTX 285s to squeel so the excuse for the RMA probably won't be valid and I don't want a refurb with a possibly worse squeel anyway.

It only happens in certain points in the game though, like the tile screen. Once I'm in action, there's not much noise going so it's not THAT bad...just not something I'd like for the $300+ I spent on my card yknow?

It's directly related to the framerate so something on the board is squealing at high frequencies. V-sync + triple buffering works for me but there's no excuse for this to be happening in the first place.
 
I think the MSI GTX275/285 Lightning version could solve this but it will probably have double size of the memory. (I would rather have only standard size since I am still on WinXP 32-bit).

Anyway - is this squealing happening only in 3D or can it happen in 2D as well? For example dragging and moving a window in Windows, working in Photoshop etc.? I could possibly tolerate some squealing in some 3D applications but never when working in 2D.
 
Just for reference:
EVGA 260 GTX
1) Antec Neohe 500, 550, 650, and BFG LS-550: No squealing outside of 3dmark intro screens.
2) Antec Quatro 1000: Squealing at high frame rate apps, example UT3 main game screen.
Have a Corsair 750HX sitting new in box that I plan on swapping but a little concerned if the squeal will return.

If you're looking for a card and PSU combination that guarantees no squealing, there's just no way to guarantee it. At the same time, there's no guarantee that certain PSUs will make certain cards squeal. Just get a video card from a company with good RMA reputation, and RMA the card if it squeals until you get one that doesn't.

I think the reason you see a lot of stories here about Corsair PSUs causing cards to squeal is that large numbers of HardOCP readers have bought Corsair PSUs. It's not the PSU's fault; it's the video card makers being cheap and not making cards that can't squeal. The video card makers are starting to get the message; MSI says that their Lightning series of video cards cannot squeal.

You are probably right with the PSU/graphics card combination.

I would probably like to get that MSI GTX275 Lightning but who knows when it will hit the stores. I have asked MSI and no answer.
