Not sure who to believe. I'm running Windows 7 x64 beta... HD Tach has to be run in XP compatibility mode... so who knows. I'll try some file copies and post more results.
 
Testing a 5.9GB (6346670080 bytes) file copy from drive to drive -- C: drive is a 300GB Velociraptor and the 2TB is of course the D: drive.

Copying from 2TB drive:

:eek: I didn't believe it, so I tried it 3 times with different copies of the same file to ensure nothing was cached between copies. I got the same times within ±1 second:

Read 5.9GB File: 63 seconds
Write 5.9GB File: 55 seconds

Now I just have to wait for these puppies to go down in price a bit and to see if someone's willing to guinea pig these drives with Adaptec RAID controllers to see if they're compatible. :)
 
again...it's amazing that you lose 200GB to the ole' what's your definition of a GB on formatting...1024 really ads up...
 
I'd love to post more benchmarks but hardly anything works in x64, much less Win7. :\

I retested HD Tach in 32MB mode and compared it against my Velociraptor (blue line)

One other thing I have to admit, this drive is quiet and cold. Even in the random seek tests, I can't hear it over my case fans. (although that's not saying much) I thought the original benches showing 26c were just because the drive was still cold from shipping. But it's been running for 2 hours now, idling at 24c. It went up to 27c during the write test. For reference, room temperature is 21c and the drives have a 120mm fan blowing directly across them. My Velociraptor idles at 41c.

When these come down in price, I'm definitely picking up a few more. One can never have too much storage space.
 
I want 5 of these in a tiny ass WHS system. Not for primary storage, but if you have extra disks to backup the server....10TB of space....

Nice performance there.
 
Heh, 5 of these babies would hold more than all 23 of my current drives in my WHS box.

I feel so out dated.

Now to get enough cash to get like 20 of these and I'm set for a looonnnng time.
 
Thank you for the benches, makes me really anxious to buy some of these, just hope some other shops besides Newegg get them in soon, maybe Directron so I can pick up locally.

ARGH! I had a nice reply typed out and the forum went down.... So I'm retyping from memory.

A test of how long it takes to create an image of the system drive (Velociraptor) onto the 2TB drive using Windows Backup:

The system drive had 160GB in use; the resulting disk image was 130GB, indicating some kind of compression going on.

The backup took 20 minutes and 7 seconds. Doing the math, it was reading 126MB/s from the Velociraptor and writing 102MB/s to the new 2TB drive. The latter number is in line with my previous write tests, so I believe this is the maximum real-world sustained write rate....for the first 7% of the drive at least :)

I kept an eye on the Storage tab of Resource Monitor for the duration of the backup. The total throughput (read+write) never dropped under 12,000,000,000 bytes/min (200MB/s).

Interestingly, these drive-to-drive tests really demonstrate what happens when the read burst rate and write burst rates work together...Instantaneous total throughput rates in excess of 400MB/s were not uncommon. I grabbed a screenshot during one of those bursts:

Right now I'm backing up my old file server (750GB drive with 20GB free :D) over a gigabit network... It is pulling a consistent 40MB/s for large files and mid-high 20's for directories full of smaller files.

It's a "green" drive, so it probably spins at 5400 RPM.. they advertise them as "7200 performance levels" without stating the actual RPM.
 
My understanding of the Intellipower feature is that the spindle speed is not fixed at 5400RPm or 7200RPM but rather varies over that range depending some sort of built-in logic. This drive is not expected to outperform the Blue series. As long as it performs on par with the 1TB EADS and the price comes down I'll be happy.

Nope, they say that because they don't want the stigma of a slower drive since the performance of them is not like old 5400 rpm drives.. but if you google wd green rpm microphone you will find that they are actually 5400 rpm drives.

They will. Newegg is just being a douche and charging MSRP cause they know people will buy it at full price.
