It would seem there is an issue with both the PS3 and Xbox 360 version of GTA IV locking up. Reports are supposedly coming in from all over that the problem is bad enough to cause your system to hard lock, requiring users to unplug their systems completely to reset. Most of our users seem to really like the game and no reports of hard locks yet. Any of you experiencing problems?

That's what many forums - as well as many of our readers - would have you believe, with reports of the game locking up during/following the game's first cutscene, an error so severe you apparently have to unplug your console at the wall.

I have yet to notice this. However, i just bought the game last night and played for 3 hrs. It's not the first game to lock up though. Every so often, COD4 locks up on my 2 month old Ps3. Hmm...dunno. Hopefully it's not too bad

No lock ups yet! And I'm loving the game so far.

That’s still unfortunate news. But I guess if you consider the issues with the Halo 3 Collector’s edition disc at launch, it somewhat lessens the surprise that the next biggest video game release would be hampered by an equally frustrating issue.

I heard on the radio this morning that they expect almost half of the buyers to skip work today.

Sad about the locking up, this could ruin the game.

I've played it for about 2 hours now, and have experienced no problems

So far the game is good, but I'm not that far in yet.

For the PS3 users, I just want to mention that I have had games lock up on me if I had previously run F@H right before playing. If you're using F@H it would be best to shutdown the PS3 for a minute or so then start it up before playing games. Maybe it was fixed in latest version of F@H but I wouldn't know since I stopped running F@H since I noticed the issue. I haven't locked up in any game since.

Played the game for over 30 hours and had 1 lockup so far. I was driving on the roads between the cities and there was a limo with cops jamming it in either side of it, so i stopped to see what was going on, next thing the 360 lockups hard (cant access dashboard etc), but the radio station im listening to carries on playing. I was quite disappointed at first as i had only played the game for about 2-3 hours, however after playing for over 30 hours now, ive not seen the problem since.

...one more reason to wait for the PC version.

Not quite a fair reason. The whole point of console is the unified architecture and hardware where there's no real reason why developers would make such glaring mistakes and bugs in their codes.

The diversity of hardware in PC makes bugs more forgivable.

I've got about 6 hours on the game so far, haven't seen any problems, other than the inability to set the controller down :p

I've never ran into that problem with my PS3.

I've never ran into that problem with my PS3.

IIRC it was Assassin's Creed that did the locking up anytime I had run F@H before I ran it. It could have been a bug on AC or F@H or both. The only thing was I could play AC for hours with no problems if I didn't run F@H, but after I ran F@H before AC, AC was guaranteed a lockup within 15-30 minutes of starting.

No lockups here, I'm playing the xbox 360 version. I heard online that the xbox 360 version doesn't lock up unless the hardware fails and the fix is sending it to MS for refurbishment.

Between single and multiplayer on my 360 version I've done about 10 hours so far. No lockups yet. Of course, I totally jinxed myself by saying that. :)

Sent to the bigwigs just in case....

A friend of mine owns a Launch 60g and a post-launch 20g. He has upgraded the HD in the 20g to 120g, and saved the 20g drive for emergencies.

His CE version of GTA4 has this game breaking bug on the launch 60g PS3. It plays just fine on his 120g one (former 20g).

He is now in the process of putting his 20g drive into his 60g unit, and going to test it that way. If it works, we'll have at least a handle on what may be going on.

This is very important to me, as I too have a 60g PS3, and will have my GTA4 CE copy tomorrow via Amazon/UPS. If a different HD actually enables the thing to work, I'm not going to complain about having a reason to upgrade my PS3 HD, as I can use the space for "stuff".

HD Swap is completed, firmware upgrade going on as I type this.

Installing game now.

He's playing through now, results momentarily...

Success! Well, this was loaded from the save-game of his working 20g (120g) PS3. So, he's nuked it, reinstalling from scratch, and going to play though the beginning with a "new fresh" game, and see if that is it.

Total Success. With clean install, clean fresh new game. Past the game bug. This is HD related for the PS3. The launch model of the 60g PS3 hard-drive is the issue.

My friend tells me he may try to put the 60g drive into his working 20g (now 120g unit) reformat and try again. But, that isn't going to be tonight.

So, original launch 60g PS3 hard drive is a 5400rpm Seagate and fails. This isn't related to the PS3 /core-hardware/ and is hard-drive related.

Good information for all, spread it around.

If anyone needs more information, let me know and I'll try and get it and update all. I'll also get the results of his other conversion/swap with the original 60g drive in the original 20g unit when he does that....

I played for about 20 minutes before my 360 locked up and then RROD when I turned it back on. Not that it was fault of GTA IV...

Mine had the video freeze up during the opening credits, but the audio kept right one going..I was like "CRAP!", but waited a minute and it caught back up and kept going with no more issues. I haven't played tons yet..1 hr or so..

Hmm i think there must be more than one problem going on, considering Ive had 2 crashes on my 2-week old 40gb PAL PS3 (in about 15hours of play).... obviously not the same problem, but still shouldnt have happened

As mentioned in the Kotaku link, it isn't across the board for 60gb ps3's. I'm running a launch 60gb ps3, and (knock on wood) have had zero issues with GTA4.

My 40 gig PS3 has locked up once. It was when I took Little Jacob to some apartments to waste some dealers. This is the PS3 with the 65 nm chip.

Playing GTA IV on my launch 60g PS3 I had a few slow downs during 3 hours of playing last night. But I have yet to experience a major lock up or crash needing a shutdown/restart. I have however had problems with multiplayer (which is expected for a few days on a title this popular).

I have a 60GB PS3 and it runs without any lock ups, the worst I've had is the screen will freeze for a second or 2 while the audio continues and it's good, I've also noticed a slight graphical glitches but nothing that effects game play.

i'm running a 40gig (with a 100gig hard drive that i put in last week). So far, I've had the unit hard lock 3 times during the crime and punishment cut scene. vid will lock, but the scene keeps playing the audio as if nothing is wrong. audio ends and from there its a hard reset. after the third time, i skipped the cutscene and was able to continue the game. now i just get the 1/2 second skip here and there, with an occasional 10-15 second lock about once an hour.

I had one lockup that dropped me back at the beginning of the game. I was doing quite at the same time though; it was in the middle of loading a mission and I had the 360 control panel blade open to check on some friends.

No big deal as it was right after an autosave. I'll be sure not to be doing other things while it loads up a mission. :)

I find it interesting how many forums members are now claiming their PS3 is locking up, right after Steve posted this thread, hehe. Take it back Steve, "Most of our users seem to really like the game and no reports of hard locks yet"!

Ranger - There are quite a few people on Shacknews who are having issues with the PS3 version as well. Hopefully they patch this soon.

As I posted earlier, my CE showed up this afternoon so I wandered on home to try it (had a sick child today, how fortunate or unfortunate however you look at it).

Mine worked.

My buddy is trying the HD swap and format as I type this, so we'll see at some point here in the near future.

As we're getting more and more information, it really sounds like it may be a specific batch of these Seagate HD's.

I'm imagining all the stutter and random lockups from others, that aren't this big game-breaking opening one, could also be the drives in these units. I played for roughly 1:30 and didn't notice a single stutter (and especially lockup) in that time. Of course, I didn't buy my 60g unit on launch day, so it could be that the "batch of drives" theory holds water.

Since I haven't ever had an issue with my PS3, I haven't had a need to crack it open and look at the HD itself.

Either way, I'll post again when I get more information than this.

There really needs to be a thread dedicated to the 360 problems, and the lockups for it, to see if there is a pattern to the hardware similar to the issue on the PS3 60g.
