there are MANY reasons for the sound loop crash in source games and they can be different for everybody. i decided to mess with sound settings in vista, i unchecked all the boxeds under "Exclusive Mode." went from INSTANT crash in TF2 to playing for over 1 hour. i confirmed by reversing this and again INSANT crash when entering server. AA and AF causes crash also in my case, so these are also turned off. HDR also off/none.

Works fine for me with both enabled, but good for you for finding a fix. :)

Now go play, it owns!

I had one freeze up the first time launching TF2 (~26 seconds after the world launch) so I jumped on the forums saw to insert "-window" in your shortcut and the game has been 100% bug free ever since. Not one thing other than sometimes my character will stick to an enemy character and I cant move. Damn good work by Valve :) Brand new computer using Vista 64 in a beta I was expecting dissapointments

another option that cause sound loop crash for me is HDR, be sure to set that to off/none if youre having issues.

does this happen in XP as well?
HL2 runs great for me, but TF2 crashes almost immediately with a looping sound bug.
Ive turned off firewalls and anti virus. Just using on-board mobo sound.

The only way I could get TF2 to work in XP was to force DirectX8.1 Mode.

I've been playing Dark Messiah under Vista and I get minor stuttering/sound loop freezes on occasion. Maybe I'll give this a try.
