I'm starting to be thankful I missed out on the Wii.

Like so many other people I was really anxious to get a Wii since launch, only to be disappointed at it's limited availability. Hell, I even got up at 6am a couple mornings to snag me one of these new Nintendo's. In the end I missed out each time, only to give up until after the holidays.

Now that a little more time has passed though, and my 'launch goggles' are starting to wear thin, I'm starting to wonder if I really want a Wii at this point at all. Don't get me wrong, I'm dying to play Zelda. But after Zelda???? Looking well into the consoles future I'm not seeing anything but kiddie games, ports, and ports of kiddie games. And what's really making me think twice is that Zelda is now available for the Gamecube - which I already own.

I've always been a huge fan of Metroid. But unless the new one pushes the series beyond Primes' gameplay, I may not be that interested. I've played both Metroid Primes for the GC, and I'm ready for something new.

It all too well reminds me of Nintendo's previous game selection for the past two generations, which is basically summed up by 3 or 4 must have titles, and the rest being crap. I'm sure I will certainly own a Wii at some point.... but after buying a 360 six months after launch and giving it time to mature, I'm starting to think this is the way to go.

In fact, I'm contemplating picking up a PSP instead. It had a pretty good year this year, and there are a couple of future titles I'm looking forward to: Metal Slug and D&D Tactics.

How are current the Wii owners feeling?

I enjoy it a lot but its immediate future worries me.

Zelda is great, of course. CoD is alright. I'll be picking up Rayman in a few days once my second Nunchuk arrives.

The rumors that SMG and Metroid may be delayed are discouraging.

Im dissapointed, wii sports was good for a couple of days, but just swinging and not being able to contorl the characters running etc got me real bored of it, rayman is fun for now, nothing else interests me, its had a lot of hype, everyone has run out and purchased one, but for the UK price im expecting gameplay (which it has) and good polished graphics. the virtual console is a rip off (ive mentioned in another thread that £8 for a 15year old game is a complete rip off. £180 for a wii which just feels like a rehoused gamecube with wifi and sd slot with a new controller which to be fair could be made for any next gen console. Im keeping the Wii as its keeping the other half fit but severe lack of games is pissing me off. I want a decent fps and platformer and racing game.

I got one launch day and I'm feeling more than fine. So far it has better games than the 360 and the PS3 at this point in their life cycle. Nintendo always pumps out good games, and I'm sure by this time next year Wii will have a better catalog of games. Wario Ware is gonna be great, metriod 3, ssx blur, mario galaxy, super smash bros brawl, sonic and the secret rings, final fantasy chronicles, sadness, project HAMMER, and more. I don't know what else you would want for system exclusive games. There is something for everyone, and it looks to be a good year for the Wii, as well a the ds (again). My money was well spent, and let me tell you that for multiplayer(not online, yet) and family gaming Wii takes the cake, I've had more people WANT to play the wii than any other console. I'm very satisfied with my Wii, and it complements my PC nicely.

Oh, and BTW, similar things were said about the DS at launch...

So, has anyone done a comparison between the GC and Wii version of Zelda? I am contemplating picking up the Wii, but the only thing that really interests me right now is Zelda.

I'm currently trying to sell mine. The main selling point -- the new control scheme -- adds very little to the gameplay experience.

I think the difference is that the GC version is 'flipped' like looking in a mirror, text is not but the world is, so walkthroughs (most made for Wii) are confusing at best.

Controller is the real difference, graphics are similar if not identical. I think the Wii is a more powerful GC, but not a generationally more powerful one like the 360 or PS3.

Bottom line is that if you already have a GC then you could probably save 250, or at least wait until the lineup is more concrete.

Cool. Sounds like picking it up for the GC is the way for me to go right now. I really do hope that some more quality 3rd party titles come out for the Wii, I like the idea of the new control scheme. Well, time will tell I guess.

I'm kinda in the same boat. I kinda want a wii, I kinda dont. Not a fan at all of zelda games, COD3 I heard is not very good... I'm sure they will come out with some good games in the future, but I'm not sure if I can stand the graphics. I'm picky, I guess.

the main thing that would discourage people from buying call of duty 3 would be the enormous learning curve to the control scheme. it took me a couple hours to finally catch the drift of the controls. once you do finally become more fluid the game gets a lot more immersive. I havent played the GC version of TP, but with the wii it feels much better not having to mash buttons as much, and aiming things such as the hookshot and the bow are MUCH easier and accurate

I said this would happen long ago. Besides Zelda (which btw is nothing short of a GCN port with new Wiimote features, not sure why everyone considers it a Wii title), nothing is coming out in the forseeable future worth buying for on the Wii. Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Brothers : Brawl, and Metriod are the only major things on the radar and recent internet rumors are now leaking that its 'possible' Nintendo is holding SMG and Metriod back until the holiday 2007 season to continue long term interest in the console. This shouldn't shock anyone IF true, just look at all the delays Zelda TP got.. what 3 years ?

These reasons, coupled with the Wii's rediculous price of $250 are soley why I did not buy into the launch hype and rush out to blow cash.

I will buy a Wii when SMG, SSBB, Metriod are all out and I can walk into any retailer and pickup the console for <=$149. Until that day, Nintendo can make their money of fan boys and suckers IMHO.

I like Nintendo, but I despise the Wii in its current state. I think most people are either too loyal a fan or just too ignorant to see likewise.

edit. Oh and component cables are not included, they'll run you an additional $60 IF you can find them online. Playing games in 2007 on composite (RCA, 480i) is a total joke.

4v4 Bowling tournaments in wii sports on christmas eve!!!! This thing was such a hit I know it will at least be selling 5 more units from my family now.

Yeah it's overpriced at $250. That's going to really suck if SMG and the rest aren't coming until Christmas season 2007. What are wii owners to play for the next year waiting for some good titles ?

Nobodys arguing that Wii Sports isn't fun, but we're saying there is nothing there for longevity. After your family gets tired of bowling for 2 weeks straight, then what ? Seriously...

Then what ? Well then you've got 6 dusty Wii and a heap of buyers remorse. Welcoem to reality.

I just ordered component cables for $14 shipped.

And I'm looking forward to playing Zelda, metal slug, trauma center, rayman, elebits, super monkey ball and soon wario ware. that's a hell of a lot of titles for a console that's only been out 1 month.

I think it's just all about what interests you. If you're a graphics junkie or only like FPS or fighting games then obviously the wii isn't the console for you right now. I enjoy playing games with my family and kids and I'm really excited about getting the wii.

Those are solely rumors and should be taken as so.. but that would suck. I think SMG is slated for a early Q2 NA release as of now. I played SMG at E3 and it was a blast, I want to own it.. but I just refuse to pay $310 for a Wii (w/component cables.. required in my book) when there are only 1 maybe 2 games worth owning for it. :/ That and I think $249 is a total ripoff for what you're getting.

*shrug*

Got mine, love it, still playing it. Rayman is lots of fun, and currently waiting for Elebits to arrive from Gamefly. No complaints on the price, or the console titles (haven't bought any yet waiting on some faves to come up). If you're a single guy and don't have friends or family over enough, yeah I can see your point, but still going strong here between wife and my 3 kids.

I also have a 360, Xbox, 2 Gamecubes, PS2, and Dreamcast hooked up and running. So not new to consoles.

AARGH!

I'll agree, and I was speaking from personal opinion. It is always about the games, but I'm just too stubborn a consumer to pay that much money for a console with very few upgrades from its last gen counter-part. I like the idea behind the innovative Wiimote, but I do not like the idea of paying $250 to experience just that.

I played the Wii at E3, very fun.. but seemed gimmicky. Ive been saying since then that I just do not see the longevity in that console. However for you, if there are games you see worth buying and enjoy the console with your family then its worked out great for you. I'm certainly not trying to say the console is bad.. perhaps I should rephrase..."I personally do not see the longevity"...

I want a Wii, I want to want a Wii right now. Logic, stubborness and game library is holding me back.

What a bunch of ignorant drivel. There are plenty of worthy titles out for Wii right now, including Zelda, Rayman, Elebits, Madden (best version, no less!), Trauma Center, hell, even Excite truck is worthwhile.

Meanwhile, 3rd parrty developers are *tripping* over themselves trying to play catch up and get games built for Wii. The system's looking to have a *very* bright future indeed. You can chalk up the first launch day sales to !!!!!!s, the rest are certainly not.

Also, component cables are $29, not $60.

Suit yourself. I played through Zelda, now I'm having fun with Trauma Center since I missed the DS version, Monkey Ball, Excite Truck, and Metal Slug. If you have to say the "kiddie" comment, then you should just stop yourself right there, did you really want one?

That's not reality at all, just your twisted delusion. Fact is this: Having had Wii sicne day 1, not a *single* day has gone by when it hasn't been played. Every time we have friends over, people are lining up for a turn. Sports, Rayman, Elebits are all games that couples, families, friends can enjoy in spades. For the solo player, Zelda's a fantastic offering.

Of all the systems I've ever bought at launch (every single system except 360 and PS3, and 360 I bought in May), Wii is the ONLY system I can honestly say I have *zero* buyer's remorse over. I also just gave 2 Wii's to family members for Xmas, and you know what dominated the day's fun for 2 DOZEN people for us yesterday, all day long? Wii.

Yes, apparently games that are FUN are "kiddie". God forbid that people should *enjoy* themselves while playing a GAME.

Anything that can overtake football on the big screen TV during the holidays is well worth my $250... ;D

I think its when games dont involve some sort of mysterious soldier or space marine from the post apocolyptic future battling aliens, then the game is kiddie. Even though the only people I've witnessed in person say the whole "kiddie" comment, have probably been 15 years old or younger. ;D

Right after launch day, was in BB, and bunch of folks watching the PS3 demo, and the Wii demo was next over. Overheard one guy say it didn't look "manly" enough. I think for alot of guys, since it's not the most expensive macho toy out there, they diss it.

It's about fun, not horsepower, not graphics, not HD. Just fun... I have had more fun with my family with the Wii than any other console.

The price tag, I got no beef, b/c with gamecube, S/D slot for memory, 4 gamecube controller ports, gamecube memory port, built in WiFi w/WPA security and most advanced gamecontroller on the market.

I've had mine for a week and the more I play it and read about it the more I think it'll be old hat sooner than the other consoles.
There are just so many times swinging a controller instead of moving a pad will somehow be "fun" and "innovative" when the graphics aren't in the same league as the other two. Immersion is nice, but visuals are a huge factor in that.
Lots of people are talking about how their friends and family are loving it and can't be pried away from it, but that's the appeal of it...for a few days.
I doubt granny and little brother will be so impressed in a few months.
We'll have to see how some upcoming titles do before I'm convinced it'll have a long future.
One way or another, as long as it eventually gets Smash Brothers and Mario Kart, I'll be a happy customer. 'Til then I think my 360 and PC will get more use.

The games I was referring to are games like Open Season, Ice Age, Ant Bully, Happy Feet, Barnyard, etc.... The kind of shit that always seems to plague a Nintendo system.

Feel free to stop trying to make me look ignorant.

As for what theNoid said, it was a little harsh but completely true. After Zelda there's nothing. Especially if one owns another system already. The only other game I'd want to play is Super Monkey Ball.

In the Wii's defense, I think all systems are weak at launch. I would definitely say the Wii's launch lineup is better than the 360's was, just from Zelda alone. Which, like was said, is really just a Gamecube title.

I really wanted a Wii at launch. But now that's it's been a month and the library is starting to show itself, I'm not very impressed.

Every defense of the wii I've read since release has to do with "having the family over for (thanksgiving-christmas-etc) and everyone having a blast playing wii sports together for hours".

How much gaming do you honestly do year round where you have 3-4 people at your house? Once a week? Not me...

I game with friends via a great multiplayer experience...first through pc gaming, and more recently through xbox live with voice chat. Like others have said, how often will you have grandma, uncle bill, and the cousins from cleveland at your house all jockeying for a wiimote in front of your TV?

I've played wiisports (*the game used the most to strongly defend the party aspect of the wii), and it's frankly got no legs. It's fun as hell at a holiday party the first time you pick it up and the crowd has some drinks in them. When you return to playing games on a video game console next month, in 2 months....think it'll have the same legs?

I don't.

I own one and I agree with him. Why'd I buy one? I have the money right now, it's not going to drop in price any time soon, and I wanted something new top play over the Christmas weekend.
Had I not gotten one, I wouldn't be any worse off.
It's nice to have, but it's not a must have by any means.

The PS3 is facing the same problem right now and the 360 had the same problem at launch also. Resistance is a decent game, but definitely nothing spectacular and not a console seller. The 360's launch games were also so-so and there wasn't a lot of quality games released in the subsequent months after the launch except maybe GRAW. The PS3's lineup for the immediate future is weak as hell. Of course, no online support at launch is something going against the Wii that the other 2 systems had at launch.

And large groups of college students are going to gather to play wiibowling and wiitennis on a longterm basis? I can't see it personally. *personally*

And games in the longterm that will cater to this supposedly awesome party environment seem few and far between. Super Smash bros will be a great group game...but it won't use the wiimote, which I thought was the whole point of the get togethers and the rediscovering of youth and love for games that came from the wii.

Between madden, wii sports and monkey ball we really haven't been bored yet... and wario ware is coming out soon too

My lust for a Wii has faded a bit, but I still want one anyway.

I too see gaps in the upcoming year, I've seen the list of announced titles for 2007 but I only see a few that I'm interested in.

What I was hoping for is really just...more Zelda. I like the action-adventure style gaming, with places to explore, stories to hear, items to collect, while putting at least some action into the gameplay. I would have figured on the Wii being great for this sort of thing. These sorts of games can really soak up hours and I love the value they give.

RPGs would be nice too, except again, I'd like some action in my gameplay.

I'll have the Wii, and I'll enjoy some of the light wacky stuff, but I don't see many other games besides Zelda that I can sink large amounts of time into. Just multiplayer would add a lot of replay time, but online won't be available for awhile yet, and many games aren't even using it.

Then again, maybe this is Nintendo's goal. To offer the strange new games that might not make it on the other consoles, while still providing the occasional killer game. Instead of being the featured set for the non-stop gamer, it'll be an extra console in addition to their x360 or ps3. It's affordable enough for quite a few people to purchase this as their second console. Either way, they're going to make a crapload of money on this.

I think that will be the case with many gamers. Knowing Nintendo, there will be 6-8 MUST HAVE games for the system with several other fun games thrown in between.

When I buy a 360, I think that will get the majority of my attention over the long run with me frantically playing Wii games a few times a year as more kick-ass first-party titles are released.

Besides, there are still a crapload of GC titles I need to go through. I still haven't even beaten RE4 yet.

I think the wiimote's appeal is going to wear out quickly. Like yea its awesome to use for a while, and its a cool new technology, but I think its going to get boring after a while..

How so?

If anything, I think the next generation of consoles will all use some sort of WiiMote tech. It's the one thing about the system that I think will stick around for years to come.

My main concern isn't that the Wii's launch lineup is weak or that the Wiimote is a gimmick. It's that the future software lineup looks extremely shallow. I mean, more so than usual during a consoles release. Which, arguably, is the way it was for the Gamecube.

At least the PS3 has a good handful of potentially great games on the horizon.

Like I said, I will almost surely be owning a Wii at some point. But right now I'm not impressed with the direction the software is heading.

The Gametrapezoid does have good games right now, but the only thing that really warrants a purchase of the system is Zelda, which outshines all of those other titles. Even its most anticipated games are first party titles(Super Smash Brothers Brawl, Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime: Corruption), so in that sense, it does remind me of the Gamecube and N64.

To be fair, though, it really depends on whether or not developers can come up with a steady stream of titles that take advantage of the control scheme without tacking it on for the sake of it.

If this doesn't happen, then it's going to be seen as a fad/trend and the novelty will wear off.
