Just backing up to an external hard drive is not a good backup plan. You need multiple external drives or a good tape drive. And you need to be sending backups to an off-site storage facility.

Lots. But I don't have nor do I need any antivirus programs on mine - that's not necessarily "not taking care of" a system. Just depends on how experienced you are.

The OEM version license is stupid - if you upgrade your machine til it's basically a new one - why bother with buying windows again? NewEgg sells OEM versions of stuff...I really don't think MS would care.

Actually, your LCD will be fine running at 800x600. It's not "native" per-se, but it is half the native resolution and the pixels will not be stretched and will still look quite good.
