You're not wrong. I considered that as well - I could have just put the whole computer in the basement, and run long DisplayPort, USB, etc cables. But I do like just seeing my computer - all that RGB and tempered glass would go to waste in the basement. And I just sort of wanted the...
Looks like I'm safe - we keep the A/C set at 74F with a target humidity below 46%. Even if the HVAC can't keep up with the humidity, I've never seen it go over 50% in the house. Per that calculator, the dew point is 54.2F. That's way cooler than the basement gets, even in winter...
That's very cool. I've thought about seeing if I can take a Raspberry Pi and program my own fan controller/pump monitor, that could actually text my phone if something is out of order.
Again, it's not on a shelf - it's on a very sturdy table, in a fairly blocked-off section of the basement with no foot traffic.
Certainly the whole system adds risk. Water cooling itself adds risk, and this compounds that risk with more connectors, long hose runs and such. I did use thick...
There's no reservoir downstairs in my final setup, just the one upstairs. It catches all the air, and I can bleed/top off from there.
I strongly considered just having a power supply downstairs, running the pumps/fans 24/7. That would work just fine. However, I'd have to be sure to remember...
Ok, a good hour of Unigine Heaven is completed. Temps are all stabilized after 30 minutes, but I went an hour to be sure. GPU hovered between 34/35C. CPU touched 58C for a split second, but once then spent most of the benchmark right at 41C on the package. All nice and chill. :)
These D5's are rated for something like 3.5 or 3.9 meters of head pressure (the specs weren't consistent), so I figured two would handle it. I actually got this set up and hooked up a "test loop" upstairs using a spare res, CPU block, and a spinny flow meter so that I could do a "proof of...
Thanks - I'm pretty pleased with how it came out, and amazed at how quiet it is. Every time I walk into the study now, my first thought is, "why isn't my computer running?"
Now I just need to work on the fan controller and cable management on the basement setup.
My gaming system is water cooled and runs great - but I had a goal to make it nearly silent. I also wanted to get it to stop dumping tons of heat into my study, especially with summer coming soon. I decided to build a cooling "tower" in my basement (directly below the study), and move the...
I am NOT an expert, and I'm NOT an engineer/scientist. My son, however, is a senior at a university getting his degree in mechanical engineering, and just finished a couple of thermodynamic/heat transfer classes. We had a discussion on this a few weeks back.
His comments are that the optimal...
I'm running a basement cooling system with a pair of D5 pumps, travelling 12 feet up to my study, though GPU/CPU/VRM blocks then back down to the basement. I run both pumps at about 2/3rd speed and it's still overkill - one pump will still keep the coolant flowing.
Both are great fans, you'd be well served by either. That said, I love the Be Quiet fans. The mounting options are great, and they are really, really quiet. Nice long, sleeved power cables as well.
I have a cat that did the same on an old case I had that blew hot air out of the top. I found an old CD holder that was a metallic mesh and put that on top to stop her. Worked well, and didn't reduce the airflow noticeably.
Currently she tries to lay on my router in an attempt to cook it...
Got the replacement yesterday and it is running great. With the old card, running Unigine Valley for 5 minutes or so would have the card at 83C and the fans maxed out. With the replacement card, I ran it for 30+ minutes and it never went over 70C with the fans holding at 1400 or so rpm (nearly...
Case fans all look good and are running at the speeds they've always run at. I even cranked them up to see if that would help, no change. I tried with the side of the case off and that didn't change the temps.
I ended up opening a support ticket with EVGA last night. 1 hour and 4 minutes...
I have an EVGA 1070 FTW card, purchased back in August. Card has run fine and quiet for quite a while. Back in October or November I installed the thermal pad kit, and of course repasted the GPU with some Arctic Silver 5. All seemed fine, the card continued to run extremely quiet. I mostly...
I'm with you OP - I picked up a Vive earlier this week. Got it set up and found it to be pretty cool. Went into Elite: Dangerous (major reason I bought it) and just couldn't get past the screen door/seeing individual pixels issue. Yes, tweaked the SS and combed through all the forum posts to...
Does anyone know the dimensions/thickness of the thermal pads EVGA is sending out? I'm going to request a set of pads, but if I have some of the right thickness/size I may just go ahead and apply those before I get the EVGA ones.
The small quantity of reviews did give me some pause (these just came out this year). And believe me, I came close to getting the Vanatoos. I had them in my Amazon cart with my mouse hovering over the "Place Order" button a few times.
Ultimately, I went with the Klipsch because my home...
I just bought a pair of the Klipsch R-15PM powered monitor speakers. Much like the Vanatoo, they have a built-in DAC and have inputs for analog, USB, Optical, and more, including built-in bluetooth. Also a subwoofer-out like the Vanatoos. Great sound from them. Same retail price as the...
I'm considering going SFF for my next gaming computer build. This is months away yet (maybe Skylake timeframe, not sure), but I'm doing a bit of research.
I'm a fan of quiet systems, however. I'm trying to find out if SFF gaming systems can be built to be relatively quiet, or if they are...
