I am finally getting around to building a computer after 2 years and I have gotten behind on video cards.
What I am looking for is the sweet spot of price performance.
I have done some research but at least with NVIDIA cards its confusing as heck. There are half a dozen 8800's (GTX, GT, GS...
I had the exact same problems where the game would crash after the sub thing.
I switched to my Vista install (I dual boot Vista and XP) and it loaded the level fine but was so slow it was unplayable. So I went back to XP and updated my video drivers to the newest version I could find and...
But that is kind of my point people upgrade too often. Heck i used to be one of them, new video card every year, more RAM, new CPU. IN the long run using a Laptop has saved me money.
As for upgradeability you need to research things before you buy as laptops have come a long ways in the...
I use it for everything.
When I first got my Dell 9100 I figured I would still use my desktop for gaming, but as time went on I never turned on my Home PC again. Then when I swapped to the XPS 2, I turned my desktop into a Mythtv box.
I actually feel the opposite. I only use my Laptop as my primary system, infact this is my Second "Desktop Replacement" Laptop that I have owned and I love it.
Benefits:
- I can pickup and go in minutes, and I can take my system wherever I go. I am also not stuck to 1 room of my house, I...
I have not looked at PDA for a few years and I am not sure good they have gotten.
I am looking for a device that fits these requirements:
- small enough to be carried on me at all times (pocket or backpack)
- Able to play video's (divx, xvid, etc.) and has a good enough screen to see them...
Battlefront 1 was a terrible.
I have been playing Battlefront 2 for a few hours now and its an OK game but nothing special. The maps are still rather small when compared to Battlefield 2 or even Battlefield 1942. The graphics are ok but nothing special, I won't even play on the planets...
Bah do not listen to them and get the Laptop.
I have had my XPS2 for 3 or 4 months now and I love it. Infact I have a perfectly fine desktop here and I have not even started it up for months now.
It really depends what you need it for. Myself I like the fact that I have a pretty powerful...
I used Mythtv for a little over a year, and when my box decided to fry I decided it was time for a change up and I am now trying Sage.
At this point I am wanting to go back to Myth as everything just seemed to work without too much juggling and it is a very fine program. I know nothing...
It really depends on what you are using it for.
If you are hauling your laptop everywhere you go you might as well get a lighter model. If you just want a portable computer that is powerful then get a DTR.
I personally have had my 9100 for a few months now and I love it. I have not...
Forgot to mention that I am Canadian so SageTVs EPG is not really working. I played with XMLTV a bit today, but had some issues getting it to work.
I think I will revist SageTV when it has native guide data for us northerners.

I have been using mythtv for about a year ago and I love the program but I am looking to start doing a bit more with it, and I am running into issues with my lack of linux knowledge.
When I started using Myth there really was no good windows equivalent that had all of the features that I was...
I have been looking for one myself and I did a little bit of research and it seems that the XPS/9100 have a large power draw and there are not many adapters out that can handle them.
I have read a couple cases where batteries have been toasted by a bad car/air adapter and another person...
No camera, I will see what I can find.
Not much to see though, guess I can take a picture of my wall :) Everything else is hidden away pretty much. I even keep my HTPC system in another room to keep the noise down.

I have an Infocus X1 which I have hooked up to my HTPC.
I like it. It is clear and has all the qualities I needed at a very reasonable price.
Only real downsides to a projector are:
- Bulb life. I watch 2 or so hours of TV a day on average on this thing, I did the math once and it...
First you are going to have to explain what the problem is to start with. It does not work at all is not a good explanation.
Does it start the game? Are you getting display errors? Lockups?
The more specific the better.

Doom 3 runs great on my 9100. NO lockups what so ever.
I am using the 4.7 Cats that have been modded for mobility systems.
You just need to download the regular driver from ATI and mod it with this tool http://www.driverheaven.net/patje/

No it will run lower resolutions fine, but it will interpolate the pixels.
So instead of having a nice clear screen it might looks a little bit fuzzy. With the pixels on the WUGA being so small it might not be too bad, but I still think that there will be a difference between it and a LCD...
Alot of that is fluff and marketing.
The only real differences between XPS and 9100 hardware wise is that the XPS has the 10/100/1000 Ethernet and a different modem chipset than the 9100 and the with the XPS you have to take a WUGA screen
If you cared to you can stick a EE in a 9100...
1.2GB = 1GB + 256MB
On the emachines you only have ready access to 1 of the dimms. The other one is hidden inside the machine and is a 256MB chip. So if you toss a 1GB chip into the accessable slot you get 1.2GB of RAM.
If you feel adventurous you can also open up the laptop and get to...
The 9100 does not have a mobile P4 in it. It is the same chip as a desktop.
As for computing power, I would have to go with the Athlon as from the information that I have seen they seem to have more power. Although the new Pentium M's are supposed to be 1.5x as fast (per clock speed) as...
I use the regular Catalyst drivers (up to 4.7 now I think) and just modify them with a program I found on the net that modifies them to let my mobility part use them.
Or you can just get the Omegas which come modified.

Actually I looked into that, but the whiteboxes all seem to have 9600's that are soldered to the mainboard.
Dell is releasing a new video card for the XPS/9100 next month (ATI 9800) which should rock.
Between that and upgrading my CPU my laptop will still be kicking butt for the few years...
lol like emachines are so good.

I don't see complaints of Dells hinges cracking.
For me when I was shopping my Dell was cheaper than me getting an emachines and upgrading it with RAM and a better HD.

I love my 9100. Infact I am using it right now. It has pretty close specs to ExpresKeep's machine.
P4 w/ HT @ 2.8GHZ
15.4" WXGA
1GB DDR 400 2 DIMMs
128MB Radeon 9700 Mobility
60 Gig 7200 RPM hdd
24XCD-RW/DVD combo drive
802.11b/g wifi
Works excellent for gaming, I get 40+ FPS on...
I did some playing around and overclocked my GPU a bit. Got another 400 3dmarks. So up to 3800.
Personally I think that 3dMark is crappy benchmark. That extra 400 marks (about 12% increase) does not roll over to my games. My average framerate in Painkiller was only 2 or 3 more...
Here are my scores with my 9100
3dMark2001 11716
3dMark2003 3441
This is on a P4 2.8, 1GB Ram, and 128MB 9700 mobility vid card.
I tried some benchmarking with Painkiller as well using fraps.
1280x800 no AA or AF. Averages around 80 FPS
1280x800 4xAA and 4xAF Averages...
I see a 3 step process in your future:
-Sell it.
-Research
-Buy something different
29% interest is a killer. What kind of monthly are you paying on this thing? It costs you around $37 a month just to pay the interest charges.
I personally have a Dell Inspirion 9100. Plays...
You mean the password does not show anything when you type? That is normal it will not show anything since it is a password you are typing in and there is no local echo.
Just type in your password and hit enter. Everything will work fine.

XPS seem to range in the 4100 - 4200 area. My 9100...
That is why you get a 9100 instead with a WXGA screen. Native 1280X800 resolution and you save a wad of cash. I only use my Laptop for gaming so the loss of desktop space is not important to me.
As for price performance, at least in Canada, it is hard to beat the 9100. I shopped around...
I too have a 9100 which is basically a little brother to the XPS. The motherboards are identical (except for the Gig ethernet and the modem chipset) so the video card upgrade for the XPS should work on the 9100. Dell may not sell it to 9100 owners but I suspect that between a little social...
There are 4 basic installs when you startup with the Knoppmyth CD in your drive. Auto-install, Auto upgrade, Manual Install, and Frontend.
Only the frontend install can run off the CD everything else will require a frew Gigs or so of drive space.
If you want to retain data on your drive...
I took a quick look on the Mythtv Mailing list and they stated that iTunes support is in the works.
Having never used iTunes I can't really give you specifics, but if you just take a look at the mailing list archive:
http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/
There is all...
That is sort of what I have going.
I have my VGA output going to my Projector and my TV out going to my Television. Both work fine at the same time, but I am running both off the same video card (GF4MX) while you want to use 2 different video cards for output.
It should be doable I...
Definitely more ram.
If you are using MythTV and are in North America they recently changed the way they handle the TV guide data. I have read that some computers with less than 512MB it can take hours to parse the data for the TV Guide, due to some swapping issues. By contrast my...
PVR - x50 cards do not require you to have a soundcard hooked up to capture the audio. So you will just need 3 of those cards and not have to worry about sound cards except for in the Frontend machines.
As for the idea with wireless, I would be suprised if you could get 2 much less 3 boxes...
