    FS/FT: Spinning Hard Drives - 2.5 and 3.5", 500GB and 1TB

I have several spinning hard drives that I don't need and I'm hoping someone else does. These are almost all pulls from new OEM computers that were replaced with SSDs - basically brand new, but the warranty is with the machine they were installed in, so not transferrable. I will post prices...

    FS/FT: 500GB 3.5" Spinner HDs - lots of them

I packaged these up just to see how they would ship safely (and to get them off of my desk). 20 of them fit comfortably in a USPS Large Flat Rate box, so I have two boxes of 20 and one box of 17. I'd take $300 per box of 20 ($15per drive, I pay shipping) and $250 for the box of 17. Offers...

Just added another one to the stack today for 57 total. Make me an offer I can't refuse.

    FS/FT: 500GB 3.5" Spinner HDs - lots of them

I have a pile of 500GB Desktop/3.5" 7200RPM 32GB Cache Seagate Compute hard drives to get rid of. These are all pulls out of new machines that were upgraded to SSD. They would be under warranty only with the machine that they were originally installed in, so I am selling them as-is...

    3.2TB SSD for $240

I'm guessing you haven't figured this out yet, either? I've been trying to get a 1.3TB card working for a few days. Upgraded the firmware incrementally, cleared the LEB error with a secure erase, but it will not format/mount. If I try a secure erase now, it gives the: "Device '/dev/fct0' had...

Windows 10 19H1: All the Changes We Know So Far

Windows is a free download for licensed users. Using OEM Recovery disks is doing a disservice to a customer. Even new machines through our shop are formatted and treated to a fresh install of Windows. If specific software is needed for hardware operation it is added, but in most cases Windows...

MIT Publishes Self Driving Morality Survey Results

I only looked at the pretty pictures, but I would like to know how the autonomous vehicle is supposed to differentiate between a doctor/athlete/criminal/etc. I understand the interest for the sake of the 'morality' study, but if this is intended to be of benefit to the AI in autonomous...

Anyone willing to check some CSS for me?

I am not a design guy. I can do some basic VB/.net code behind, but it's really not my thing. I paid to have a site design updated a few years ago, and it has worked well. However, somewhere along the line I broke some css that is causing some issues with a js menu on mobile devices. It...

Ready Player One Sneak Peek at SXSW 2018

I'm a fan of the audiobook as well. The first movie trailer made me think I was going to hate the movie. This one looks a little bit closer to the storyline that the book created.

Dell Ought to be Ashamed of Themselves...

There is a reason that level of machine is so cheap. Access panels/ease of disassembly take engineering and cost more to produce. Add that to the fact that 98% of people will never care to mess with hardware in a dirt cheap laptop, and it's a calculated decision to do it cheap and easy.

HP Accused of Quietly Installing Spyware on Windows PCs

Just format/install Windows from scratch. That's been standard practice around my shop for years. Solves a lot of unnecessary complications, and you can be sure each machine is configured the same way. It really doesn't take much extra time, either.

Which small business printer manufacturers take security/firmware updates seriously?

Word. They are better than the IOT devices that are rightfully getting a lot of heat lately, but printers generally don't get a ton of updates. That is likely because they aren't seen as a large attack vector, but it would be nice to see them maintained a bit better. That said, the...

Came in here to post the same thing. Hard to take the article seriously if it can't get the basics right.

    Ready Player One Teaser

My thoughts exactly. The (audio) book was decent for mindless entertainment. If you expected more than that, you'll be disappointed. The trailer looks awful if it's supposed to portray the book. While the story does revolve around VR where anything is possible, the premise of the plot is...

    WannaCry RansomWare RansomWorm

There is no such thing as an operating system without vulnerabilities. You can complain about the effectiveness of the Windows Update system and it causing a hesitation to patch, but you can't say that something like this wouldn't have happened if any other operating system were the major...

    Alternative to Meraki APs

I agree with all of this. I hate that they don't follow standards, but there simply isn't anything else in the same price range that performs as well and has the same amount of features. I run Ruckus when it really matters, though.

    Google Reveals Unpatched Windows Bug

Bring it on. I wish I could still get a Windows phone with decent hardware (Verizon). I ran one for almost 3 years before I destroyed it. It was a much better experience than the Android phone that replaced it and I am constantly having to fiddle with and find apps to do things that WP just...

Windows Phone And Blackberry Head For Extinction

I recently switched from Win 8.1 to Android 6.x as my Lumia 822 was getting old and slow. I miss my old phone. It's nice having access to some of the Android apps that I couldn't run before, but I'd be happier if things worked as well as my Windows phone. Outlook for Android doesn't support...

China's LeEco Acquires VIZIO For $2B

I'm a bit torn on this. I'm no fan of Vizio (my shop repairs more of them than all other brands combined), but I don't like seeing American companies going away, either. Even if they weren't manufacturing here anyway.

Don't Send An Email If You Can Pick Up The Phone

By calling me, you are implying that whatever you want to talk about is more important than anything else I may have going on at the moment. There is no customer more important than the customer I am dealing with 'right now', so I generally don't answer if I am working on something for someone...

SMTP Relay for clients that don't support encyption.

You shouldn't need to change any DNS records. That page was just referencing where to find the smtp server name to send to. As another option, Barracuda can also be used as an SMTP relay, but I don't recall the configuration requirements off the top of my head.

SMTP Relay for clients that don't support encyption.

You can whitelist an IP in 365 to allow unauthenticated SMTP relays on port 25 for exactly what you are trying to do. There are some drawbacks to direct send, but they also allow authenticated relaying without encryption as well, if you can make it work with your devices. Check this page for...

    Windows Phone Is Dead

I still use an older Lumia 822 and like it. It integrates better with Exchange than anything I have found on Android, and I don't care to use an iphone. That said, I think the Microsoft/Verizon decision not to carry the new 950 series on the nations biggest carrier is an ominous sign of things...

    Small/Medium Business VPN Router

Interesting. I have been slowly migrating my SMB clients to the USG series. Sure, they aren't as intuitive and simple as a consumer-level router, but that also makes them significantly more powerful once you know what you're doing. I'm generally not one to use support unless I really need to...

I need a transparent PPPoE device. Suggestions?

Can you elaborate? Does the ERL just handle the authentication, and forward the DHCP lease to the attached device(s)? I can't seem to find much info on it, other than that it can authenticate w/PPPoE

I need a transparent PPPoE device. Suggestions?

Thanks for the suggestion, I hadn't thought of the ERL because I haven't used one yet myself, but this might be a good place to start. Another wrinkle I didn't mention above - The ISP does not support a true static IP address. Instead, they use DHCP reservations based on the PPPoE...

I need a transparent PPPoE device. Suggestions?

I have argued that point for quite a while myself. There is currently a 5 port ($30) Linksys switch splitting the fiber ethernet to the two firewalls. Doesn't instill a lot of confidence. Unfortunately, that part isn't my call to make.
