I am far from a Microsoft hater, but I remember this scam back in the day.
I dont know if "tricked into it" is the right thing to say, but it was pretty silly.
I think both companies were definately in the wrong.

Actually users (just regular old users) can add network printers, just not local ones.
If the machine the printer is on is an older or different OS than what they are using, it should be as easy as adding additional drivers on the machine sharing the printer (its in the sharing options)

You can likely use the net command batch file for this if it is a Microsoft OS.
You do not really want to allow an anonymous group/user to access your entire Hard drive.
