I thought even Mac newbies knew how to use Google.

Also, the unit with a 2.0GHz processor is mated to a much slower Radeon 6490 with only 256mb VRAM. You need to go up to the 2.2GHz to get the 1gb Radeon 6750.
I understand Steve probably had several years of concepts already in research if not in early production. So it will be some time before someone else has to predict where personal computing is going. I think Apple will continue to stay relevant as long as the company isn't gun shy about...
I also buy almost exclusively from the refurb store. Three MacBooks (2 Pro, one regular) bought from there in the last 5 years. My mom still uses my old MBP 2.2GHz C2D and my wife still uses her old MB 2GHz CD. I think I saved something like $350 on my new MBP (current model).
Great price! If I didn't want to make a substantial upgrade from my C2D Macbook Pro, I'd definitely be on board.
Note to prospective buyers -- this MBP was released on April 14 last year. So that means you can still buy Applecare for it.
I think the power button on my Powerbook 520c was located in the upper right hand corner of the keyboard. Didn't cause me any undue stress because you have to hold it in for some period of time to make the machine shut down. Same with the new MBA.
Although my wife never had a backlit...
Several sites have done performance tests comparing a drive with a newly installed OS to one with thousands of random reads and writes. As others have mentioned, much of the cleanup is done by the drive and OS X doesn't seem to require TRIM for optimum performance.
Long story short, the...
I also just bought my wife an MBA 13" with a 128gb drive and I'm typing this response on my MBP 2.2GHz. A little more than a month ago I replaced the HDD in this laptop with a 120gb Vertex 2 and the difference is night and day. I did it for 2 reasons -- to avoid buying myself a new MBP right...
I have a similar vintage MBP as Liver (2.2ghz c2d, 4gb 667mhz memory) and I just replaced my Western Digital 320gb 5400rpm drive with a 120gb OCZ Vertex2.
And the performance is unbelievable. Every app opens instantly. No more beach balls or bouncy icons. Startup is very fast and wake from...
Thanks! I called Apple support and they will repair it if the video test indicates that the video chipset has failed.
This is definitely preferable to buying a new MBP right now. I'm right at three years for this laptop and I wouldn't mind getting at least one more out of it.
All,
I'm hoping you can help me troubleshoot my problem.
I've got a 2.2GHz Macbook Pro non-unibody from 2008 with an nVidia 8600GT 128mb card. It's a 15.4" with a glossy screen.
Last night, I plugged in the MBP to the wall and set it on my coffee table. Opened a few tabs (gmail...
It's a common misconception that Handbrake won't decrypt DVDs. If you download and install VLC (which you're not ever required to use), Handbrake uses the VLC libdvdcss to decrypt the DVD. Easy peasy.
I think OSX also does not have TRIM support. So folks with SSDs may have to reformat and reinstall on a more frequent basis. Not having an SSD, I can't independently confirm this. Anyone with an SSD in a Mac want to weigh in?
You're right -- you do need VLC installed for the DeCSS libraries. But that's it. Handbrake refers to those libraries to decrypt a DVD but it doesn't actually require the user to open VLC at any point during the process. I still like VLC for my video playback, tho.
It's worth noting that Apple throttles down the GPU clock speeds in their notebooks because of heating concerns in such a thin notebook. You can download a utility to allow you to increase it but that has the potential to damage your notebook, I guess.
Not knowing anything about how capacitance sensors work, I wonder if the ones on that side of the screen might be having issues. In which case it's a hardware problem -- not a software problem. It should still be under warranty, right?
I'd heard that any tablet announced on the 27th won't be available until March. But since we don't even know for sure that Apple is announcing a tablet this month, we also don't know if/when it will be available.
They're very good about keeping things secret except when they intentionally...
As an update, I gave my PB 12" to my mother to replace her old homemade AMD Athlon 1.2GHz machine with 768mb ram, an AIW Radeon 9000 and a 15gb hard drive. The most important thing she got was USB 2.0. Life sucks when all you have is USB 1.0.
You guys have had better luck than I have. I've got a 2.2GHz MBP with 4gb of RAM. For that reason, I decided to run Windows 7 x64. It isn't all that speedy and it takes forever to boot up (either in Bootcamp or Parallels). Many of the Apple provided drivers don't work either. I'm thinking...
If you're looking at the $900 non-pro and the $1000 pro, I'd definitely spend the extra on the pro. Illuminated keyboard, firewire, SD card slot, 0.26GHz faster and max ram is 8gb instead of 4gb. Definitely more room to expand. I think the battery may be a slightly more improved version on...
I think she also said: "Dad, it's time to let go," (which I disagree with entirely). I love how every line in that scene was an homage to Firefly and its legion of devoted fans, myself included.
Hey, anyone notice that Morena Baccarin is in the new V miniseries starting tomorrow?
I didn't see anything in the FS/FT rules prohibiting a noob from selling an item. Why would it matter? He could just post 50 random things in other forms. No benefit from that.
But I agree that no one is going to buy a (reasonably) expensive item from someone with no heat or that no one...
We all know that's not true. You saw the Apple event last week, were underwhelmed by Apple's new product offerings just like the rest of us and bought a new iPod anyway even though the Zune is currently available.
You'll be back for more kool-aid.
I'd vote for a plastic Macbook (one of the previous generations). They seem to be a much better value than a Mac Mini, IMHO.
This here is a pretty good deal:

You can buy just about any brand. Recommend going to Newegg's site and using their memory configuration tool. You can put up to 1.25gb in that laptop (256mb is not removable) so I recommend a 1gb stick. I have the same thing in my Pb 12".
