My first card was a Riva TNT2 Ultra back in the day. Had that card for ages then did a rebuild and got a Radeon 9700 Pro....my goodness that was a glorious day!

Not played it myself. but a couple of old wow buddies have picked it up and they both said it was fun.....for about 2 hours! Looks to be very hit and miss on the content (from what I hear), so maybe with updates and a sale it can keep it's head above water.

More than happy with my 4770k, but when it comes to upgrade time, I hope that there is once again a decent choice to make. Remember the Athlon XP days fondly!

Buy the best you can afford! There is no such thing as "overkill" in this market, because what might be classed as overkill now, will not be in a year or so. If you can afford that 1070, go for it!

But if you can get that performance for roughly $200 less (if we go on the basis a RX480 is $250 & the 1080 is $699) then it starts to make a bit more sense (well, it does to me as I have a family to sustain, and not a lot of disposable income!) IF the cost is roughly the same, then of course...

It's not as if Vulkan has just appeared from nowhere, and a quick google brings up this blog from nVidia singing it's praises... I don't doubt for one minute that nVidia do some astonishing things in their software to get the performance they do, just now with these new API's the AMD long game...

Cheapest one I can find in stock at Overclockers here in the UK is a Palit card at £269.99 However, the XFX 4gb RX480 is in stock (not sure if this is the one that can be unlocked to 8gb) @ £215.99 or the cheapest 8gb version in stock is a PowerColor one at £224.99 - both are the reference...

...but it does benefit all gamers! Unlike GameWorks or some other black box tricks Vulkan is open source and ALL hardware can use it. Already seen gains from all boards switching to it, but just so happens that AMD have the 'better' hardware to take advantage of it right now.

I would agree to a point, but the gains had by the RX480 just by changing the API really would make me lean towards the 480 just because it seems to be more futureproof (if you can call a midrange card futureproof). The 1060 is a great card, but the FE is way overpriced.

I think this is set up nicely for the AIB RX480's to compare with the 1060. It really does seem like AMD purposely gimped their card to keep the AIB partners happy that their kit will sell over the reference model! Also, the AIB costs should be more in line with the 1060's pricing as well...

This is off the reference model that only has the 1x 6pin. You will have to wait for the AIB models with the additional power before you get to the bigger numbers (hence the higher price points).
