    Nvidia SUPER Refresh: Faster 2060, 2070, 2080, Faster GDDR6 and $100 Off

Real competition involves more than duopoly. Unfortunately, in tech, duopoly is generally erroneously seen as quality competition. Search. Phones. Operating systems. GPUs. CPUs. Consoles. Et cetera. Cartels are the worst. Monopolies are second. Duopolies are third. None qualify as high-quality...

    The Privacy Phone.

No. OS X, at least, is full of spy tools and the arsenal is expanding. Windows 10 is merely more open about things because MS gets more scrutiny, less of a blithe assumption of good faith design. Everything is moving in this direction, even open source products like Firefox. Many in the tech...

New Tariffs Target U.S. Board Games and Game Consoles

For those who claim that "US" corporations are hurting or will be hurting if asked to pay living wages, consider these charts. Although they're a little dated, the trends speak for themselves. corporate profits (absolute dollars and economic share) wages as percent of economy massive...

Intel Announces Sunny Cove Brings 18% IPC Improvement

Additionally, there is no guarantee that new vulnerabilities haven't been baked into the new hardware, unintentionally, intentionally, or both. There is a conflict of interest when it comes to secure design. Given that there is a lack of adequate competition (duopoly doesn't really cut it and...

    The Privacy Phone.

    1) It is possible to put in switches that don't do what they're supposed to. This is, in fact, more common than most people recognize. It's also common to not put in switches for everything. Apple products are also absolutely riddled with data theft and the trend is only increasing. For...

    The Privacy Phone.

The obvious bottom line is that the only way a phone can be trustworthy is if everything in it is fully open source.* Everything. Zero undocumented features. Zero trade secrets. Zero insiders-only. The same, of course, goes for PCs and any other piece of tech. And, it must be designed with a...

AMD GPU Generational Performance Part 1 @ [H]

Go ahead and ban me for discussing something your article discusses — features like Rapid Packed Math being implemented by developers and how that impacts gaming. GameWorks is very similar to Rapid Packed Math. It is one company's tech vs another's (Rapid Packed Math). Clearly, Nvidia has been...

A New Painkiller Promises Relief Without Addiction

Fantasyland. Well, of course. If you want people to do as their told (max out their debt, since the job of the masses is to own all of that) then you have to make it so the only things they are allowed to enjoy will keep them in debt. This is why, for instance, American Puritanism has so much...

AMD GPU Generational Performance Part 1 @ [H]

Cough... GameWorks.... cough. Also... this isn't just about AMD but also about GlobalFoundries, correct? The process that AMD was forced to buy Vega on (due to the wafer agreement and other issues) was optimized for low power, as far as I understand it. It is inferior in performance, at higher...

China Wants to Regulate Games to Combat Myopia

Mixed information. The recent headlines strongly declare that there is a myopia epidemic caused by screens but I found a 2015 article that says a 20-year study found no link between screentime and myopia. It may be that cell phones, rather than televisions and traditional computers, are to...

A New Painkiller Promises Relief Without Addiction

Let's cure sex addiction by making sex non-pleasurable for everyone. :) Of course drugs with no side effects are the holy grail of medicine. It's unfortunate that no such drugs exist. Even water will kill a person. So, finding drugs with better therapeutic windows is the real issue...

A New Painkiller Promises Relief Without Addiction

How about the people who ended up resorting to illegal drugs because they can't get any physician to prescribe effective opioids for extreme pain? Not everyone can afford an ambulance trip every time they have a recurrence of chronic severe pain, nor do most want to suffer the trip there...

A New Painkiller Promises Relief Without Addiction

I have had very severe back pain and the only thing that allows me to sleep and heal is a strong opioid. Judging by all the press about them I would have felt strong euphoria and become addicted quickly. Instead, when I've been given them I feel a bit nauseous and very sleepy. In terms of...

MSI B350I PRO AC Ryzen Motherboard Review @ [H]

Let's hope this isn't one of those bait and switch moves, where a company substitutes a lower-spec product for the one that got a good review. FCC Mistakes Angry Americans for Hacker DDoS Attack

A recent Harvard/Northwestern study determined that 90% of the public is invisible to Congress. It looked at what Congress does legislatively and what the public wants its members to do. They talk enough of the talk to get elected, though. How does the IQ Bell curve fit with this finding? It...

It was also Kirk's. Kirk just happened to get demoted to captain. There was even dialogue about it. He said something about how he belongs "out there" or something. We can thank Sonny Bono/Hollywood/Disney infinite copyright for a lot of this. Corporations own things forever now. The Supreme...

Don't forget capped broadband, which is definitely a thing for a good number of people. Believe it or not, there are young good-looking men. Somehow, it just might be possible for Orion men to look just as good as the women and be just as seductive. Star Trek is full of what I call the "Star...

The way they were portrayed, judging by that pic, is a hodgepodge of different stereotypes. The primary messaging is anti-Soviet. The facial hair is code for Russians. However, it is also code for "devil". The Mirror Universe was very superficial by using facial hair to make Spock evil, for...

Wells Fargo Blames Computer Glitch as Reason It Foreclosed on Hundreds of Homes

You should read my post. It shows that what you're saying is not true. The entire GOP united around Gramm–Leach–Bliley and the bill was named for three Republicans. Literally, the only Republican to vote against it was Ron Paul. (The other GOP no-vote I don't count because the guy was a Democrat...

When you begin a post with a flame it makes me inclined to think it's not going to be very well-reasoned. Just an FYI. See? You're not actually rebutting what I said. You're talking about a different issue. Nothing I said suggested that people should arbitrarily demand anything. That is pure...

Gramm-Leach-Bliley was named for three "conservative" GOP people — a senator and two members of the house. Every Republican in Congress except Ron Paul voted for it. Every single one, except one. Bill Clinton signed it and a majority of Democrats voted in favor of it. Senator Byron Dorgan...

At the moment? JJ Dreck isn't a new thing. They put a guy who publicly bragged about not liking Trek, who clearly was going to abuse the franchise for his personal gain (to get his claws into Star Wars, the franchise he said he actually valued). His first film had: • a completely brain-dead...

Mozilla’s New DNS Resolution Is “Dangerous”

Star Citizen’s Chris Roberts Comments on Pay-to-Win Accusations

My wisdom is that people should ditch Windows and force developers to embrace Vulkan on Linux. Instead, they point fingers at Mac users, accomplishing nothing. The same goes for the fake console/PC divide. People seem content, though, to be scammed.

Patrick Stewart to Star in New “Star Trek” Series as Jean-Luc Picard on CBS All Access

The Next Gen films were rather dire. The "Okay, Ahab" stuff was a definite low point. Trek writing really went downhill with Magic Wesley (he can stop time!) and Picard the Senile. I don't consider JJ Dreck to be Trek at all. Enterprise is also knock-off grade. Voyager had its faults but it was...

Uptight Robots Begging to Stay Alive Are Less Likely to Be Switched Off by Humans

You mean if there's war that compassion = gullibility? If we throw out our humanity we can save humanity? Hmm... I've joked that the biggest danger we face from AI is that we could have to, for once, live in a world that is rationally governed — instead of ruled by corruption. So, yeah, the...

Unlike fans of Windows 10 who typically admit it's rubbish and yet think that everyone else should use it like they do. It's amazing how many consumer-unfriendly moves MS has made with Windows and people keep coming back for more.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Is Being Made as an Action Game, according to New Job Listing

Yes, I'm sure fans of FFVII will be to blame when the "remake" turns out to be so little like the original that the reason they are fans is made irrelevant. Clearly, it is those fans, not the developers, who made the decision to like something that just can't possibly be made (a game that fans...

Microsoft Waves “Early Goodbye” To Windows 7, Pushes Windows 10 Upgrades

Gaming companies should unite around Vulkan and dump DX12. Of course, that won't happen. Consumer-friendly actions, like freeing us from the clutches of MS, aren't compatible with "the market" apparently.

Microsoft Waves “Early Goodbye” To Windows 7, Pushes Windows 10 Upgrades

Apple is an absolutely terrible model in terms of planned obsolescence. The company went from being the gold standard for long-term support (look at the Mac Plus and all the versions of Mac OS it supported) to being the worst. However, I have to say that Mavericks (10.9.5) is a far better OS...

Strange, then, how the Lynnfield Blender results don't show gain from The Stilt's custom builds but more recent Intel CPUs and FX do. The latter in particular shows a really big gain. I think the biggest gain came from using Intel's own compiler.
