I keep my 2 rigs (8x 7970) hashing on betarigs, power cost is about 40-50% of what they make so it's worth keeping them going. The cards paid themselves back long ago and aren't worth much on the second hand market anymore.

There were plenty of mediocre Sandys out there. I personally wanted to really get 5 GHz and it took me 2 2600k and 2 2700k chips before I sort of got there. Never quite prime95 stable 24/7 but good enough to use. That's with a custom water loop. More Sandys topped around 4.8 than 5+ imho.

Most of the cards are still only a custom cooler on a reference PCB. So that explains the outputs on those.

High VRM temps also uses/wastes considerably more power. They're just less efficient. Don't understand how these companies don't pay at least some attention to the VRMs. The reference coolers are terrible for cooling and noise but even they get good VRM temps. Clearly it's something AMD...

No I'm running UEFI+Legacy currently. UEFI only will need a reinstall. Either way, I would not even get into the BIOS to change that setting with a GPU in the system so I'm doubtful it would make much of a difference.

Not using secure boot, i'm on W8 currently. Not like the OS has much influence on the GPU not initializing for POST of course. I've tried several cards, 2 R9 290s with different BIOSes, a 7970 and 6950.... same :(

Pretty sure the power limit is too marginal to account for silicon variance. Some GPU chips draw more power than others. I have 10 7970s at identical settings and you see up to 20 watts difference between them. And that's undervolted, the differences can be bigger at stock volts. Same with CPUs...

Top tip: instead of rebooting it suffices to "switch user" that way your programs stay running. It restarts the video driver just the same.
