I like your work and returning to this thread to see your improvements each time! Thanks for sharing!
Some ideas that I never got round to on my slimline for your consideration:
For your situation of the fan clashing with the side of the case (I know you have changed fan (twice since then and...
Great stuff and great cable management! Thanks for sharing.
If you do put the cover back on, consider an extension to the fan shroud (so it is flush with the side of the case) to ensure it pulls fresh air from outside. Similar for the GPU. (I know it may be intolerable heat with the side on...
Good work with the CPU. Think the MB can do a lot more that the HP spec site says (although why would they...) eg. HP Irvine Motherboard: A List of CPU That Fit HP Irvine
Haven't tried more RAM. Can't say 8GB of DDR2 is economically easily achievable in my geography sadly :(
Consider BIOS...
I replaced the front facing USB ports with USB3 ones to utilise the upgraded MB header on this s3xxx case.
This was 50cm off length dual cable off eBay and loops round the edge of the case similar to the original cable. More work to do finishing the housing to make them stable...
Bought another Slimline off eBay. Standard inexplicable* no graphics problem.
Couldn't fix. Got a bit annoyed. Oven baked motherboard(!). It works again. Will probably fail again in time, to prolong will fix up a active cooling for the northbridge heatsink, let's see! :)
Probably a bit over-the-top / obstructed HDD cooling solution. But I might as well put a spare 80mm fan to use. ;)
Secured between edge of case, SATA cable pushing out and ziptie securing to ODD cage.
Have you looked in the Slimline case? If you are planning to stay in it please note you will struggle to fit the additional* SSD in (or at least it needs some thought). :)
Consider a Hybrid drive?
*additional to 3.5" HDD and ODD
Can you reach BIOS (first)?
I would try to isolate the fault as usual to a particular compnent by adding removing with ones you know are working. Also memtest to check RAM if you haven't already?
This is better than the 7750 right?
For those in the UK:
2GB version at £110 ($185)
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-058-KF (will need LP bracket separately (annoyingly))
That board will be too big for the s3000 variant cases.
You may have more luck(room) in a s5000 variant case.
Related but also separately here are some disassembly instructions for the s5000 case
Just as an update on this. The M620 worked fine in my laptop.
I first updated the BIOS to the latest version from HP (f15) for my laptop model.
The dis-assembly was fairly comprehensive - the laptop had to be taken completely apart to switch the CPU out. I used the service guide and some...
UK woo :)
Not sure why the single port has 3 cables coming off it tbh...looks like half the USB pair is headed elsewhere (black header).
The USB part of it is literally just a hub afaik so you should be fine. I'd imagine the drivers for it are pretty generic also.
You'd just be plugging the...
This sounds like the classic no vid Slimline fault.
If you are out of ideas try checking under the integrated GPU cooler (silver with Foxconn on). The cooling pad under seemed baked to me. Might be worth redoing with fresh pad/paste if yours looks similarly.
I do have to warn it was...
Might fit (just) that way (with the constraint being the width of the case.
I looked at the measurements before and it looked borderline. I guess you might cut a square out for the fan intake to help...
Does the PSU look like it will fit? can you close the case on it?
You would need to...
Seems like it might be a stretch...
SFX is both too wide and too tall, you would likely need to cut away both the side and the top of the case to fit it in there.
Why SFX?
Your only problem is with regard to directioning the air from wherever it is intaking back down the case towards the GPU. There is much in terms of intake ingress on the front of the case (the HDD fan you may have seen I think pulled in the bottom of the case and fired upwards over the HDD)...
My system was having problems so I grabbed a random hard drive I had laying around to try booting from, couldn't work out what I had previously put on it (only that it wasn't windows!)...
Booted up from it:
Haha Google yes this Chromebook has had significant factory hardware modifications...
MB: is mini-itx so will be fine. only consideration is the CPU cooler & CPU placement within the board wrt not hitting the ODD. If that makes sense. A big cooler or a board with the CPU too near the edge furthest from the connector may clash with the ODD which slides in over the board to a small...
Someone probably has earlier in this epic thread haha.
I sometimes get the feeling everythign that can be done has been done and we are now just repeating the same stuff because noone can be bothered to read the whole thing! :p
Pico PSU would be neat and probably help temperatures in the case...
Yeah the G61 series. This did allow me to expand my search but still the only concrete option was the m600 which we had already noted.
I found a G61 series on eBay with an m620 upgrade so I have gambled and gone for that model. We shall see in a few weeks! :)
Thanks for your help.
As I google further I am seeing this thread in my results :(
Also weird copies:

The complete strip-down is no issue to me . The laptop could probably do with a proper clean anyway.
I'm aware the SSD is a more performance profitable upgrade both generally and likely specifically in this situation. I may well do that anyway (as well).
But I am more doing this upgrade for...
Yeah, on this basis the M600 looks to be pretty certain. Just wondering if I can get away with the others slightly higher specced. Can't seem to find any concrete info online anywhere hence the appeal for more anecdotal info.
I'll have another check for BIOS notes, thanks.
I have a Compaq CQ61-320SA with a Athlon II M300.
I am looking to upgrade this CPU and Turion II Ultra Family share socket and TDP with the M300.
The prospects are
M600,
M620,
M640,
M660.
With socket (s1g3) and TDP(35) matches all I have to worry on is BIOS compatibility right? :confused...
To monitor the PSU? no shouldn't think so. Mind you the PSU can generally take it - you should only care about this so much as it is warming the rest of the case (which it will to some extent).
I know my PSU seems to be the hottest thing in my case. at least to the touch and feel test...:p...
Any s3xxx should take a mini itx unless its one of those super fancy PCB continues up the sides at 90degree jobs...
by which I mean...
and even then it might be possible...
I'm sure such a PSU exists I guess it's just finding one at acceptable availability and price...
btw. any reason for 300W particularly? I would think 250W will be sufficient in 90% of situations...I am running a 7750 off mine :)
Down-speccing your target PSU should ease the cost and the noise...
Well it was mainly just because to be honest ;) .. But it is definitely about 3-5 degrees cooler generally and also quicker to cool from being hot (as you might expect from the air flow theory). I can't be sure because I have since taken the ODD drive out and had warm weather recently also...
I put an intake shroud on my Slimline :p don't be alarmed by how professional it looks!
makes sure cool air from outside the case is drawn in onto the CPU.
Took the ODD out of my system. was getting random power-offs I suspect from the PSU cable being contorted round the HDD cage and crushed under the ODD.
Hope it works! :(
This is sad to hear! :(
Your PSU should be capable for the card
Are you able to try the card (or PSU) in another system to check each?
Did you get stability with the underclock?
Guess concern with supplementary PSU in the case would be super heat !
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1DzZ7oShl4  such a big card !
ps. you can run that red SATA cable up round and under the HDD for slightly tidier case.
Thankyou for this though - great to see
