Huh,
Get 256gb m2 ssd for the OS and add what you what HDD as second drive.
It's a real penance a hard drive installed OS in the year of 2019 :)
My fault , second glass of ouzo related :)
The Ultrastar , no doubt .
Old OSes cant boot from it but that is not a concern in your case.
Usually tape libraries comes bundled with license of some "lite" version of proprietary software. In mine case with two tanberg's magnum exabyte 224 lto4 and lto6 for the second, it was "Symantec back up exec" 2010 and 2014 respectively.
Always keep in mind that robotic libraries are delicate...
Honestly I dont think Lto tapes as nas is a good idea. Single click at wrong place in file manager will cost 10-15 mins delay. They're is probably tons of other unknown "underwater rocks" in such workflow.
Large nas and tape library for backup/archive. Well constructed and maintained raid...
Now the hgst drives are "wd hgst dc 510, 520... etc series" . Cause of this double nomenclature, usually they are listed just "wd", sometimes "hgst" or both. Someone will concur that's "ultrastars" only, but looking at the price they"re between desktars and ultras. Ultrastars cost was almost...
My latest build - 86 TB usable, is a short of 20-30 TBs of the end goal needs. Additional parts already ordered .
Chip-based memory tech grows fast but content creating devices aren't behind :)
....and 16x12tb hdd hgst 4kn raid10 array have a lovely performance :)
SMB file sharing quick tip: If you can afford it -disable smb sighning at the windows client too, not only at the SMB server. Via domain policy or local gpo, depend of the situation. Leave smb1 restrictions untouched. Same for macos.
Deeply concur. In terms of server hardware support I find Solaris right behind the windows and on par with linux. Solarish/BSD behind and of course MacOS at the at the bottom.
Solaris/sh.
Storage and network sharing performance, beadm .
If it's just a zfs based NAS, I can't see a reason to go away from Solaris for home and Omnios/OI for commercial .
Hardware setup needs attention but there is a plenty of options.
For 1TB LTO tape is overkill. Plenty of other much more flexible and inexpensive solutions.
Also keep in mind although the tapes are highly reliable, same can't be said for the tape devices/tape robotic libraries .
Ha, yesterday I played install UEFI vs bios, but with solaris 11.4 at asus x79 sabretooth. Worked in both cases.
Usb prepared with rufus under win7, mbr scheme for the bios install, gpt partition scheme for UEFI.
Bios settings defaults except efi-legacyboot setup.
In uefi mode, when replacing...
I moved from asus when an x79a and x99 deluxe failed in short time frame . Never had such experience with asus's mb before.
My humble opinion is too much extras , especially OC bullshits.
Used to be in the same boat.
My primary win 2012 DC is on asus desktop mb, same for the 3/4 of the file servers.
But novadays asus mobos are overloaded with unnecessary stuff which are possible point of failure and for the last two builds I went with supermicro.
Yep _Gea
I'm grateful, may be for a double digits in a row. The time to move a step forward has come.
OFF TOPIC :
Month ago I made media storage - LSI 9631-8i, RAID 10, SATA multi path, 8 used 4TB HGST HUS724040ALE640, MB Asus x79, Win2012r2 Essent. Emergency build, users satisfied. But I'm...
Hi again :)
New project, new questions:
1. HGST Ultrastar He12 12TB HUH721212ALE604 512e or 4Kn ?
2.They'll be brand new 12 drives , no mixing, provided by Intel's c622@SuperMicro X11SPM-F_-TF_-TPF . Solaris/Solarish - it will be latter decision . No ZoL, very little chance for ZoF.
I need...
It will work very well at ambient 60C... for a few minutes :).
Overall with the HDDs reliability : low and stable temp - long live. It's the leading factor of disk's longevity. Speaking of ambient operational temperature, assuming the disk sits in adequate ventilated box.
From my experience major factor for disk's survivability is the ambient operational temperature . If it is steadily below 20C, HDDs live is x2 roughly . Second is power off periods . I have more faith in HDD with 1 year continuously spin than a some with 3 months per year power-on.
Ha just for the curious:
Years ago I build a a storage rig for my an close friend's drone/video hobby.Second hand Intel PL5000 MB, 2x IBM m1015 , 2 RAIDz2 vdevs/pools, 8 2TB HDDS per vdev. Solaris 11.1 + nappit. Last month his UPS died and he ditched it. Last week was a storm, power stroke and...
Situation is under control !!:) _Gea is Nostradamus !
One of the HDDs caused the issue- probably semi-dead or something like this. I found it inserting the HDDs one by one ,restarting the system between.
Thanks !
Solaris 11.1 , napp-it 0.9e2l, 2xIBM M1015 in IT mode,16xST4000DM000 [seagate 4TB],2 independent pools [RAID-Z2] configured: each controler->8 HDDs in raid-z2.
Evything went fine for 2 years until yesterday when accidently one HD was pulled out. I plugged it back and " zpool online poolname...
Hi friends.
Just to post results from my test lab about upgrading from Solaris 11.1 to Solaris 11.2.
So I prepared an PC with Solaris 11.1 ,napp-it 09f1+ AFP netatalk v3,Sun Ray software [yes it better than VNC] with Sun ray admin web Gui .
Via Solaris upgrade manager I upgraded the system to...
If you plan to browse Maverick's shares from Windows machine, you will end installing Samba at the Mac OS :).
Browsing Mac's 10.9 shares from Windows 7/8 is PITA,just not working. The only one workaround which i found ,besides third party tools , is to disable smb v2/3 in Windows .
SmbUP do...
Sheekamoo,thanks !
Yours post is a "last drop in the cup" to abandon AFP [netatalk v.3]due to copying issues.Transfer errors when dealing with large amount of data [500GB+]. Now I'm happy with the NFS:). Same speed,w/o stoppages/errors.
So, I have g-technology G-SPEED FC XL [http://www.g-technology.com/support/g-speed-fc-xl-1] working flawless 4 years till now. It's Directly Attached Storage via 4GB/sFiber Channel to a Mac Pro Snow leo video edit system.
Originally it came with 16x1TB Hitachi Deskstars, cant remember the exact...
Hmm I'm struggling with AFP,trying to permit everyones access to the AFP shares w/o any authentication.
Defining "uam list" to "No User Authent" in apf.conf didn't help
http://netatalk.sourceforge.net/3.0/htmldocs/configuration.html#idp5334400
,the Solaris 11.1 still asking for user/pass when...
Just finished next in the row storage server based on solaris 11.1.
Intel s5000psl
2xXeons@2Ghz
16GB ECC RAM
2xibm1015 flashed to lsi9211-it
16 x Seagate ST4000DM000 4TB
2x500gb for system mirror
Very simple test from win7 to Solaris box shows 60MB/s transfer speed,i'm glad :) !
Need to add...
No help ?!
Right now I'm migrating to Backup Exec 2010. Catalog takes 5 hours per tape and I have 100+,just just great :o
Stupid computers&programs,sometime I hate them !
I'm using win 2003 SP2's NtBackup ,removable storage and tape library Tandberg Storage Library S24 LTO-4 ,FC connection , for years w/o problems...until yesterday. I create my 101st subpool in a removable storage's application pool "Backup" and NtBackup stop recognize the library and it's...
