My DCII works awesome.
Running at 1175/1375 stock voltage no issues at all with 12.8 beta (new leaked version). 12.7b saw a big boost too.
Runs cool and quiet, better VRM, power design and includes a backplate. I like.

I just went from 2 down to 1.
The top card runs hot, but fans are quiet enough that its not bad. Its definitely possible. I discovered I didn't really see much difference at 1080p with 2 vs 1 (If not looking or running Fraps to see it), so I sold the 2nd card off.
I also had a couple...
12.7 Beta runs absolutely perfect on my 7970 except one annoying issue, HDMI audio stutters badly playing Flash or Silverlight based videos. (aka Youtube, Netflix, etc)
I've tried fresh installs with 12.7b and 12.4, 12.4 does not have the issue, but doesn't perform as well.
Using Toslink...
ASIC has been accurate in all situations for me (WITH AMD CARDS)
I recently had 2 x 7970s, 2 x 7850's, a 5970 and a 6990. Don't ask.
The higher the Asic, the better they overclocked. Whether a coincidence or not, who knows.
Example
My Asus 7970 is 82.4%. It overclocks to 1180 on stock...
I have the exact same issue.
Its an issue with the driver. I have a thread about it on Anandtech with a video showing it.
Downgrading to 12.4 fixes it.
I decided to use the Toslink out on my motherboard for Audio for now until it gets fixed as 12.7 beta performs better than 12.4.
I had an Asus 7850 that was Rock solid at 1300/1375 at 1.285v. It was faster than a stock 7950. I have since upgraded, but at the time, It was a great deal for $250.00
Pretty crazy.

Anything beyond 2 680's is seeing very little performance boost.... 25%-35% for 3rd, another 15-20% for a 4th.
Not worth an extra $1000
Its drivers. Well known right now.
I had to make the same choice.
I went with the Asus after reading lots of great O/C reviews.
Both are 2 of the better 7580's available. Go with the cheaper one.
There are boards with displayport that support that res.... for example, ZOTAC FUSION350-A-E

Haven't seen any Dual link DVI's though...
I guess I should have looked at the boards.
Although the APU supports it according to AMD, I don't see any boards that have a dual link DVI port.
Still looking around as now you have me curious.
From the AMD Website for 6310:

I had 2 x 7850's for a day, but at my low TV res (i prefer big screen gaming), I didn't need the 2nd one and saved my money.
Anyways I only tried BF3, I never had screen tearing @ Ultimate and everything maxed with Beta's. (at 1366x768, i know, still looks awesome on my 5 yr old 50" Plasma)...
