    Cisco gurus - port fast?

This. I've seen portfast and no BPDU guard on old platforms melt down and take out a few hundred users because someone had a loop at their desk.

    Cisco Offers Free Nexus 1000v

Excellent. Do you know if you can use a third party vswitch implementation (e.g. Nexus 1k) with the free ESXi license?

    another home lab thread :)

They are excellent. They now have that board in stock when few do because a couple months ago, they were willing to special order it for me. At a great price.

    SeaSonic 620W Bronze INCOMPATIBLE w/X9SCM-F

I completely coincidentally bought the same power supply to use with my new X9SCM-IIF (new version of the X9SCM-F) build. Same problem. LEDs on board light up, but no POSTing, not even any beep codes. I put in a different power supply (from a SuperMicro Atom server) that only has a 20 pin...

    Supermicro X9SCM-IIF

Bingo! Thank you for the suggestion. SuperMicro told me I likely received a 1.x BIOS board and to RMA. I took this as somewhat of confirmation that they were shipping the new IIF board with the old BIOS. However, I wanted to rule out the PSU. I didn't think I had anything that would work (I...

    Supermicro X9SCM-F F/W 2.0?

Just a comment... I got an IIF board from SuperBiiz and it's not POSTing with a v2 CPU. I don't have a SB to test with, so I don't know what the problem is yet. Some folks think it may still be using the old BIOS. Waiting for response from SuperMicro. Edit: It was the power supply. See here.

    Supermicro X9SCM-IIF

Thank you both for your comments. If this is the case, I am going to be quite annoyed. This board wasn't even announced until after Ivy Bridge was launched. If it has an old BIOS revision, it pretty much sums up my opinion that SuperMicro is a careless, amateur company. I deal with their...

    Supermicro X9SCM-IIF

So I have everything. Naturally it won't boot. Memory or no memory, I get no video from the board, no IPMI DHCP requests, and no beep codes. CPU fan spins, LEDs on board are on, just seems dead. Waiting for a response from SuperMicro.

    Some Questions About Certifications

Not sure the profanity is necessary, but anyway... more than ever before, there are ways to learn things for almost no money. If you want to learn about operating systems, you can virtualize to your heart's content without buying anything. If you want to learn about networking, there is GNS, and...

    Some Questions About Certifications

I'd rather see someone who has spent their time building something cool (even if it is just a personal project) than getting certs. I go through hundreds of resumes and certs do not make me blink twice. For reference, I'm speaking as someone who builds high performance infrastructure on Wall...

    Supermicro X9SCM-IIF

Mid next week I will have an X9SCM-IIF, an E3-1230v2, and the aforementioned RAM (Super Talent W1333EB8GM) on hand. Once I get everything, I will put it together, and (assuming it POSTs), run memtest86 on it for a while and report back.

    Supermicro X9SCM-IIF

UPS tells me that mine are on their way. So unless they sent an empty box, SuperBiiz has them!

    Supermicro X9SCM-IIF

FYI these boards are now in stock at SuperBiiz. https://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=MB-X9SMII I special ordered two from them and they may have just ordered extra for stocking. Mine are en route.

Filesystem for Large Linux volume: XFS, JFS, or EXT4

I can understand why that limitation would prevent you from using ZFS. However, just because your filesystem and volume management supports that paradigm of expanding doesn't make it a good idea. On another note, are you concerned about silent data corruption? All of the non-ZFS and non-btrfs...

Filesystem for Large Linux volume: XFS, JFS, or EXT4

Use ZFS on Linux (kernel module, not FUSE). If it's good enough for Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, it's good enough for me.

Yea, I would recommend against that. I would be quite angry if I found out my ISP was doing that.

    What does that mean?

ZFS and SAS expanders with SATA drives a toxic combo?

I'm not sure if Oracle is in a position to make anyone eat their words regarding Solaris. There is now more Solaris and ZFS talent outside of Oracle (Sun) than inside. Joyent scooped up the lion's share of Solaris talent and much of the rest is at places like Nexenta and Delphix. I would...

What's right for me? Xeon 1155 vs 2011 vs Opteron

After a few years of having a bunch of disparate systems, I've decided to build a new box that will satisfy all my storage and VM needs for the next few years. My storage has been on Solaris 10/OpenSolaris/OpenIndiana for a while now, and I intend on continuing that. My VMs have been a mish mosh...
