The type of mount I suggested would mount the UPS vertically instead of horizontally. If you were mounting a switch in that rack, the ports would be facing up. So it's only as deep(thick) as the number of Rack Units your device is. Like this:

I believe the i3-3110m is a BGA process, which means that it is soldered to the board and cannot be removed. So there is no way to re-purpose it, at least that I'm aware of.

You are absolutely right. OEM socket 775 support was miserable from most manufacturers. Most boards wouldn't let you upgrade the from P4 to next-gen P4, never the less C2D.
