So, I wanted to see what a better processor would do with my GTX680 so I brought it into my new workstation which is a Xeon E5-2665 and was surprised that it didn't really do THAT much better.

went to build a new box but did some 3dmark comparisons

CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($212.48 @ Micro Center)
CPU Cooler: Zalman CNPS9700 LED Ball Bearing CPU Cooler (Purchased For $40.00)
Motherboard: ASRock Z97...
yeah. not even worth selling it. some are selling for $700... some for less than $300.
hell, maybe I'll buy these:

yeah, I've been trying to sell the Xeons on ebay... but they're not worth much it seems. like $250ea...
I'm wondering if it would be worth selling the entire rig with a GTX 570 for like $1000?
the problem is I have TWO X5647s.
I'm considering trading one of them for an X58 motherboard.
right now it has 12GB on it (3 chips on mainboard. 3 on daughter board.)
there's 6 slots on the mainboard and 3 on the daughter (not sure if I can use the other three on the mainboard to be honest)
So, might be worth it to find a good X58 for cheap and go single socket?
will still consume less power than two Xeons on the same board.
Perhaps I could trade my second processor for an X58 motherboard...
I have a Dell T5500 Workstation.
at one point I was using it for video processing and some gaming.
Here's the specs on it:
Dual X5647 Xeons
24GB DDR3 PC3-10600 memory
PERC 6i with 4x 10k RPM 160GB HDDs (currently removed and stored while I use a single 512 SSD)
Quadro FX3800 video card...
is there any benefit for something as simple as gaming?
I mostly do that now.
I'm wondering if I should just sell the 2nd processor and use a single processor on an X58 motherboard...
I'm more concerned about durability than overclocking and my stock setup is VERY tight for cooling.
I also...
Looking at getting an enthusiast motherboard to swap my X5647 on to... Are there any still available?
I was looking at the MSI Big Bang XPower X58... but they seem rare to find.
I'm wondering if there's any benefit in finding an enthusiast motherboard (like the EVGA SR-2) and installing my twin X5647s into it.
Right now it's in a Dell T5500 workstation and the 2nd processor requires a daughterboard that is susceptible to failure
Would an enthusiast motherboard allow...
so, I've had it running some heavy duty stuff (BattleField3 on Ultra) and the only thing I've done is set the fan to run constantly at 100% (it's a bit loud, mind you, but I wear headphones)
at worst, I see 82°C (strangely on that 'your team won/lost' screen...)
During gameplay, it rarely...

just bought one of these... before reading the reviews. (I haven't received it yet, BTW, so only going by stuff online)
then I read this (which brought me here today)

and mine...
yeah, maybe I'll just bite the bullet... sucks because BF3 and all my Steam games are BIG installs.
Maybe I'll dual boot and leave the twin 10ks as the 'family' drive for them to muck up and I'll leave the SSD as the gaming drive...
I was afraid there'd be no way to do a pre-boot RAID clone
oh, nice. I used to use Maxtor software until it became 'aware'. But that was during the FAT32 days.
Will this recognize the drives sitting on the PERC card?
I've currently got 2 10k RPM SATA drives running in RAID0 on a PERC 6i card and they're not as fast as the single SSD I have in my second desktop.
I'm thinking of taking my single SSD and putting it into my main rig and just cloning the drive.
First off: is this a good idea?
Second: what's...
