Some users have recently had their accounts hijacked. It seems that the now defunct EVGA forums might have compromised your password there and seems many are using the same PW here. We would suggest you UPDATE YOUR PASSWORD and TURN ON 2FA for your account here to further secure it. None of the compromised accounts had 2FA turned on.
Once you have enabled 2FA, your account will be updated soon to show a badge, letting other members know that you use 2FA to protect your account. This should be beneficial for everyone that uses FSFT.
Hi _Gea
Thanks for all your tireless work for napp-it and the community. I use your product since many years, and I am still thrilled by how much easier it makes my life, given that I am in no way experienced in the Linux world, and really just enjoy tinkering with a home server ;-)
With VMware...
Thanks y'all for your suggestions. My own research points also in the direction of Proxmox. Also, it supports Windows 11 Clients by providing a TPM option, which is great (I hated ESXi for making this topic so difficult for home users). Guess I will start with some trial tests to see how well it...
Hi _Gea
So Broadcom has stopped free ESXi versions for home use. I run an "all-in-one" setup as you describe it on your website. Any thoughts on this change? Would you already recommend an alternative?
Thanks for sharing!
Tried that, but it seems it did something to passthrough settings. Can't turn on the NAS VM, it tells me "Failed to start the virtual machine. Device 101:0.0 is not a passthrough device." Any idea what went wrong or how to solve this?
Thanks!
Edit: checked the config of the VM, there's a PCI...
Hey all,
I run an AIO napp-it (OmniOS) box on an ESXi 6.7 U3. I have two HBA's built in to connect my harddisks, and I want to add an Nvidia GPU now to assign it to a single VM. I noticed that my only PCIx slot that supports x16 is occupied by one of the HBA's. Is it safe to move the HBA to a...
Hi _Gea
Since my rig is quite old by now, it's time for something new. As I have two servers now (1 Esxi and 1 ZFS NAS), I am compelled by your idea of an AIO. I have read your manual on the napp-it website, but would like to run a few things by you, just to make sure I'm not running into...
Again, thanks to _Gea for his invaluable help. I have now upgraded my NAS to OmniOS 151031 (bloody), and my Windows Client now connects using SMB 3.0.2, however, the problem persists. I hope the guys at the VLC Forum can help me further on this one.
Oh wow, sorry, that was a noobie one...
So I made it to r151028, but as predicted in your docs, SSH didn't start afterwards, so I logged into napp-it (which was on 19.01c1, so presumably new enough) and tried to "set defaults after 151028 update". It gave me a number of errors in the process...
Thanks for the hint, so I was able to install the certificate according to your manual. Then I proceeded following the same document to upgrade to r151024, then r151026. Both went through without errors, but I wondered when my system rebooted, it always came up with r151022, apparently -...
Hi _Gea
Tried to upgrade my box, however, I get certificate errors which I cannot solve, such as this one:
Can you please help me getting past this?
I try to upgrade from OmniOS r151022 to r151026 (for above message), I also tried going to r151024 or r151028, all resulting with the same type of...
Thanks for your quick reply.
Yes it's only VLC Player. I can do anything on these shares using Windows Explorer. I can play the video files using Windows Media Player. Only VLC is not playing them.
I have restricted Windows according to the article (powershell and "activate features" method)...
Hi _Gea
I am running OmniOS 151022 with Napp-It 19.01c1. I believe OmniOS should feature SMB 2.1.
Ever since I upgraded my Windows client to Windows 10 v1903, I cannot play any video file from my NAS anymore using VLC Player. I have an open thread in their forum here where everything is...
Thanks, _Gea, updating to 151014 did solve the Problem... weird, no idea what caused it, though.
Anyway, once more, saved me, so... appreciated!
Kind regards,
Cap'
Thanks _Gea for your quick response.
I had a quick look at the OmniOS console, and found this:
I have to say I'm a complete noob when it comes to OmniOS... so do you think an upgrade would help solving the issue? If so, how do I do an upgrade of OmniOS? If I am not mistaken, I run...
Hi Gea,
I have two boxes, one OmniOS with Napp-it 0.9f3 and one VMWare ESXi 5.5 (Build 2068190). I upgraded ESXi to 5.5 a few month ago, and my NFS share always worked great. Now I had a faulty disk lately and decided to shut down the NAS to replace it (I can't see the WWN from the outside of...
Thanks _Gea, that's very interesting. Unfortunately, it didn't help to disable sync, so I guess I let the idea go now and I go for SMB then. Seems as if I have to go this route anyway one day, so I can as well do this now.
I understand SMB support is better in Yosemite, but I am afraid my...
OK, that worked so far. Now there's two odd things, I'm afraid:
1. it created 4 files when I moved the Itunes DB there: ._.DS_Store, .DS_Store, ._.iTunes...plist and .iTunes...plist. Is that normal?
2. every now and then, I get a "mp3 got disconnected" message. Settings are as you proposed.Would...
Thanks _Gea for your quick response.
aclmode and aclinherit as well as nbmand has been set as required. Also I had ACL's to everyone=modify as you suggested. The odd thing is that I was able to write some files there, and then it suddenly threw that error. I know that Apple does not further...
Hi all,
It's been a while since I was here, as my NAS was working great the last two years. As it was running full slowly, I recently decided to reinstall it completely from scratch with larger disks. So I rebuilt the box with OmniOS as a standalone NAS and almost everything is working great...
So I did the upgrade, and it went super smooth, also the napp-it update to 0.9 was easy and there was no problem - almost. One little thing is that TLS Email is not working (again), and I can't seem to find the source of the problem. When I test TLS Email, I get this error message
however...
Hey,
Thanks for the info. I don't have any fancy config, it's very basic, really. No LAG's and also no iSCSI targets (NFS only), so I guess I'll do a backup and give it a try soon.
Do you know if I have to upgrade TLS, too? I am using it right now and it took me a while to make it running, so...
_Gea,
I just saw here that Oracle supports updating 11 11/11 to 11.1...:
Do you know if this works reliably? What do you recommend - updating or reinstalling from scratch?
Thanks,
Cap'
Thanks, _Gea, most helpful.
On an unrelated subject, I have recently created a new ZFS folder on my datapool, and then moved some 100 Gigs of data from one folder to the other (within the same pool, that is). I just realized that it did not free up the space of the moved away data on the...
Thanks for the quick reply.
I'm no Solaris expert, but I guess there's no upgrade path to 11.1, right? So if I have to reinstall from scratch, can I re-import my pools afterwards? Or do I have to back them up, then re-create them from scratch? If so, I could also switch to OI, I guess... which I...
Hi Gea,
I am running an older release (0.8l3) of NappIt on my NAS (no All-in-One). I am on Oracle 11 11/11. Is there anything I have to be cautious about before I upgrade to the latest version of NappIt? Also, can I still go directly to the newest, or do I have to upgrade in stages? I don't...
Thanks, Gea, I tried formatting the disk, but it wasn't that easy to get rid of the EFI label... in fact labelling alone seems not to be enough. Finally, this article solved the problem for me, I had to create partition 2 a second time and then it worked.
Cheers,
Guys,
Just had to replace a faulty disk from my rpool mirror. I can see the new disk when I hit "replace" in Napp-It, but when I click to do it, I get:
Also, the new disk is not shown as "AVAIL", but I don't know how to get there... Any help for a noob, please? :-) Thanks!
I tried this when I started my project with Sol 11 11/11 to no avail. It was not so easy to make it run under Solaris, as NWAM kept interfering with manually configuring the LACP. I got it running with the help of a script in the end, but it was really not a neat solution. I think it depends on...
wheelz,
I was having a different setup and also a different problem, I think.
The setup was different as I was using NFS for the VMWare pool and CIFS/SMB for my Windows data. I never used iSCSI. My NFS pool was always more or less fine, as soon as I switched to SAS disks. My CIFS pool had...

Solaris 11 is free to use, but does not get updates, afaik, unless you have a support contract with Oracle. That's how I understood it.
For my Home NAS, I'm perfectly happy with Solaris 11 11/11 (not Express).
@ _Gea,
Still struggling with TLS not working on my system...
Since I installed initially the wrong version, I have the suspicion that the TLS module from cpan maybe tries to lookup the wrong version. Is it possible to uninstall the TLS module? How? I tried 'clean Net::SMTP::TLS' but it...
Hey Boom,
Not that I don't want to help, but this is clearly beyond my expertise, I'm sorry. I hope one of the experts here can help any further... With what I told you before, my pool(s) are working pretty good now, though I am just taking the obvious and not digging numbers like IOPS etc. so...
