@Danny Bui is correct, for example Linux software RAID supports a Write-intent bitmap which will only resync blocks that have changed in the bitmap before they have been written to all devices. In my experience it can reduce what would take a day or more of checking to a few minutes.
What were the commands you used to grow the array? The new drive should not be a spare if you added it correctly and the reshape completed succesfully. Check if you can examine the new drive with mdadm -E /dev/sd? does it give you information?

I have a SM case (847E1-R1400LPB) with two PWS-1K41P-1R, not even SQ, and it's quiet. 402blownstroker is correct in that the case fans are where the noise makes a difference. My case has seven 7K Nidec 80x80x33 mm fans that I tried to live with for about 10 minutes before deciding I needed to...
I agree pictures are definitely a plus, this is a showoff thread, but at the bare minimum there needs to be relevant information.
This post tells us nothing about the system specs., the last line "Total external drives and other drives in use" hints that the 3TB drives recently purchased could...
Beert3Okad nice setup! I've got something very similar (same chassis and 5-in-3) and running Linux (raid 6/dm-crypt/lvm/ext4)...I hit the same 16TB limit you did for ext4, but I have plans to recreate the filesystem to a 64bit version using unused space and migrating the data over.
I have...
My motherboard doesn't support it. But, there are reasons I got a larger case other than more drive bays, especially the fact that it has the capacity for dual Xeons. I do plan on performing more upgrades and ECC memory is one of them. :)
;)
It's pulling around 139 watts right now (according to a Kill A Watt meter) so looking at the runtime graph on APCs website that would give me theoretically about 30 minutes of runtime during a power outage. I don't have an offical APC battery so that may make a difference. I've never done any...

If you wanted to use the RPC-4020 as an external storage box you would need to add a few things to it to make it work externally to your main computer.
I'm going to just give a brief overview of how I would do this and we can pick up on any details you want help with...

If you wanted to get to the files in the directory that was mounted over without unmounting you could
mkdir /some/empty/dir
mount --bind / /some/empty/dir
cd /some/empty/dir/path/to/mount
Another alternative to reformatting would be to convert to Btrfs.
Although with that option you will still need to wait for the fsck tool, which should be available very soon, possibly sometime in September.
@Red Squirrel what was the reason they were dropping out? I'm my experience, I've build a RAID 5 with Linux RAID that dropped multiple times before the array was even initialized because of bad sectors (New drives by the way). The sectors were able to re-allocate and read just find after the...
I've never used Acronis, so i'm not sure if it has any features to skip drive errors. But, if you were to use a Linux live CD maybe using dd with conv=noerror will help mirror the drive, skipping over the errors, to a state that the filesystem could eventually repair. Also, on Linux you can view...
I have 5 of these in use (pretty much) 24/7 for almost 8 months now and have not had a single problem. Make sure the connections are firmly in place, one time my data connection wasn't "clicked" in all the way and the activity light would flash with no response from the drive until I checked to...
I got mine from J&R through Amazon for $268 looks like the one from EN-SEE-EYE-EX is in Canadian dollars so it comes out to about the same price for me in the USA. Arrived 10 days after ordering.
Thanks, there are some really great machines here!
I primarily use it as a file server and for media (movies, music, and games). For games I boot Windows from an external eSATA enclosure and can still access my raid from a VM using VirtualBox. I've setup a public share for my roommates so...
