    Small server room air conditioning

Another option for the mini-splits is to put the compressor in an interior room like a garage or maintenance closet. We have a mini-split for our MDF in a school that the compressor is housed in a custodial closet with an exhuast fan to the outside. That way we don't have to worry about the...

Talk to me about Cisco UCS

We installed a UCS chassis with 4 blades last fall that replaced a bunch of HP ProLiant DL360 G5 servers. The price was very competitive to the HP G7/G8 servers that we were looking at purchasing.

RRecommend a good external min 2 drive enclosure?

I bought this 4-bay unit from Amazon a couple of weeks ago. It's been working great using the eSATA connection. I haven't tested the USB3 connection yet. I loaded it with 4 1.5TB Seagate drives.

Finally got around to cleaning up the last of the messy closets. This is a MDF for a middle school and it is also the core of the school district network. The before pictures. The middle school MDF contained a Catalyst 4507R, Catalyst 2948G (in prod. since 1999) and 2 Catalyst 3560...

You realize that is a 4Gb fiber channel switch not an ethernet switch. They are not meant to connect like that.

    NAS Advice: Buying Today

I agree. Pick a Synology model that fits your specs and load with drives on the compatibility list. I recently installed an 8 Bay Synology at work loaded with WD RE4 drives and its a screamer. It was dead simple to setup too.

I'm glad I got to replace our chassis switches at the school MDFs. The cabling was a nightmare. Our high school had a 6513 with 6 48 port blades. The 3750 stack is much cleaner.

It's nice when we get new stuff but we don't get it very often. Our networking gear has a long lifecycle. I finally get to replace the last Catalyst 2948G switch on the network that was originally installed in 1999.

    Yeah I work for a school district. The large crate is a 6509E w/ dual Sup 2T, 2 6816 10GE Blades and 1 6848 24p 1GB Blade. It's replacing our current 6513 which was installed in 2004. Also pictured are: 2 - 5508 Wireless controllers (replacing a WiSM and 4402) 30 - 3600 series AP 6 -...

    Aerial Fiber Installs?

When we expanded our fiber network several years ago we looked into aerial for one section but determined it was more beneficial to bury as the owners of the poles wanted us to lease the use of the poles.

Just one that I remember. My biggest complaint was that some of the 10-packs were not packed uniform so it took longer to unpack them. I had a system down to open all ten at once. I wish they offered non individual wrapping for large orders.

I recently finished a project at work re-cabling all of our spaghetti closets with 1ft cables from Monoprice. Over 1200 cables in total. I definitely wasn't doing those by hand.

    Enterprise Antivirus Suggestions

We have been running Sophos for several years on our 1400+ nodes. Deployment didn't take much effort especially being a non-Microsoft shop. The support has been good when we needed it. We had a fake-av outbreak about a month ago in a couple labs and had updated detection defs with a couple...

    Cisco gear expected life

I've still got some WS-C2948 switches in production that were deployed in 1999-2000. I hope to have all them retired by the end of the summer.
