    Raid card: Cable question

Thanks for the answers, yes the idea is to go from sff-8484 to a sff-8087 backplane (norco case) If anyone happens to have a link to a cable that would be able to do that (preferably in europe but any will do). would be nice :)

    Raid card: Cable question

Heya, a friend donated me a HP P400. It has 2 SFF 8484 ports now i have found some cables (on amazon) " SAS Cable SFF-8087 to SFF-8484" so... does this mean, the raid card needs SFF 8087 and the backplane SFF-8484? Or does it not matter at all, as long as both ends fit it'll work...

    Post your fileserver's enclosure

Fractal design has some really nice cases like the Array R2 Mini Mini ITX with 6 harddrives -> 6 x 2tb : 10 TB usable storage in raid5.... pretty nice !

    Post your fileserver's enclosure

Actually, if you look here you can see there are 3 fans blowing sideways, I even prefer it this way. Air enters & instantly leaves the case, just to cool the hard drives guess it was hard to see on the other pics

    Small Business DIY NAS help

The Mobo,& cpu you have are fine, just add more ram (atleast 8 gig), install solaris 11 express & Napp-it & you got a fine nas, add 6x 2TB drives in raid Z2 , that gives you 8TB of really good storage

Are there any good reason not to use ZFS Compression ?

Well, he did say ISO, just a disk image, so thats uncompressed afaik. You could compress a few gigs off a huge ISO i think..

first time raid w/2 drives+different sizes

Well, what i can get from this is, you want speed. If it's simple work/usage speed, get the SSD for your main drive or work drive. Raid can be used to increase speed but at a risk (unless you have a bunch of drives) Since you have 2 drives it's not really an option. I'd say, put your OS and...

Are there any good reason not to use ZFS Compression ?

(this is what i think, i'm not a guru) It doesn't really matter to raid if your data is compressed or not, it's just bits. (when resilvering) The only diffirence it makes is the cpu usage -> slowdown when compressing & decompressing. I think the only way to find out if it will work out for you...

    ZFS build - feedback requested

@Slogger Heya, nice build it's pretty close to mine. Do note there were some issues with those samsung drives (firmware), just double check to make sure they are fine. There is only 1 part i don't really "get" the SSD as OS drive. Other then giving nice fast reboot speeds i don't think...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

Heya Gea, loving Napp-it so far, any chance on a better configuration of the mail system? Like a better configuration of the smtp server (authentication). Or is that already in there somewhere and I'm looking in the wrong place. I'd love to use my gmail :) Thanks !
