Yes, speed will depend on what you are doing. I am of the belief that the majority of people overbuy and spend too much when purchasing a computer or choosing what they need for a new build. the fact that bigger is always faster is only true to the extent that you actually tax the system

Sandy Bridge will definitely be out. You will be hard pressed to get an intel system done for under $250.00 (unless you go with a core 2 duo and p/u some cheap ddr2). But, considering you are using the RAM in the description. .. you may want to re-consider your budget
