XFX, DOUBLE LIFETIME warranty.
lifetime for YOU and the next person you chose to sell it to.
go with the XFX, for whatever the price. I paid $309 i think for mine. So what, i "may" have paid $20-40 more, but i have a sickass video card.
39C idle, 57C load MAX. games are insanely rich:D
mature as in, the drivers will shut off your fan, and destroy your graphics card, like some of nvidia's recent "drivers"
http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/05/nvidia-pulls-196-75-driver-amid-reports-its-frying-graphics-car/
there was a bad batch of nvidia drivers prior to the ones out.
a buddy told me APPARENTLY the drivers would shut off the GPU fan, and kill it.
MAYBE, you had those, and ure fan shut off and overheated??? or maybe because those drivers were bad, they just don't work for you?
i did almost the same thing you are doing today. went from a machine that had a 8800gts and installed a XFX5850
I think there is POSSIBLY something to be said about whether XP will just use some "default" drivers and WORK, or if it is trying to still use the nvidia drivers for your ATI card...
the drivers shouldn't affect ANYTHING.
ok, i had the EXACT same issue as you.
my solution. I have Vista x64. When i got to the "Windows Error Recovery" screen i chose "use the last settings that worked"
BAM! My machine is running fine. I uninstalled nvidia drivers, and then downloaded...
i JUST installed a 5850 today.
i did NOT need to remove nvidia 8800 drivers. On that front, you should be fine.
if you had bad ram, the machine wouldn't get to a BSOD at all. it wouldn't POST without some kind of error.
i guess i am wondering if it would have been possible to run all the 8800's that have been dying differently, to avoid it.
i ran a 8800GTS watercooled RIGHT out of the box, and mine died just like everyone elses.
ok i am reading now, but to SAVE me, and PREVENT RUINING GOOD hardware, can you just simply explain what MIGHT happen if it wasn't enough power???
Basically, say "its going to fry ure video card"
and that will make me NOT chance it..
hey, i have a XFX 5850 too. We have the same vid...
OK thanks for everyone's help.
IT TURNS OUT A STICK OF RAM IS BAD!!!!!!
its crucial ballistix tracer IMHO the best DDR2 ever made.
the LED's light up, but using ONLY that stick of ram the system throws an error.
so, arcanetripwire, do you think 550watt isn't enough? AND do i RISK...
WOW, ok, this is fcked up man.
It works with 3 sticks of ram, NOT 4. BUT, will work with 3 sticks of ram + HD and + cdrom????
one stick of ram cant take more than a HD and a cdrom.
is that ram stick fcked?
LONG story short, i have been running the RMA guantlet.
first, the original 550watt died, one of the 4pin mobo lines went dead.
SO, this is a BRAND NEW never EVER been used PSU, fresh RMA'ed, and they sent me the RETAIL pack.
Strangely, i dunno how the 8800 died. but i DO know, the...
please read this, it did NOT work until i unplugged the fans, HD and cdrom AND FINALLY 2gb of ram.
is the above not indicative of not enough power, based on it working after removing things???
it boots, not posts. Get long series of short beeps (mobo manual says its POWER ERROR)
system not oc'ed
already reseated the card and power connex
8800 had died, it is dead.
I do have a friend whos got a pc power and cooling 600 or 650 i think, but not really trying to bother him...
Ok, this is weird. I just got a 5850. I hook everything up, and when i boot it turns on but motherboard beeps "power error" and the screen won't turn on.
I have a mushkin 550watt. Spare me the "mushkin isn't top quality" i know. The point is, each 12v rail has 20amps.
i have a gigabyte...
Ok, i was one of the people who bought an original 8800 and like magic, it died exactly when nvidia knew it would so hopefully i'd be conned into buying the new overhyped 400 series.
I had the 8800 watercooled 100% of its life, YET, nvidia's plan could not be changed and my card died right...
dude, come on.
PhysX is a NVIDIA technology... OBVIOUSLY not meant to work well with ATI
You ever run some FORD parts in a TOYOTA???
man oh man:rolleyes:
so let me get this straight.
you sold a GREAT card with a minor issue, that, in all likelyhood could be fixed by new drivers any day now, OR you had a bad card and should have rma'ed
AND
you bought (or are going to) buy a card that hasn't been released to the public yet (that could...
fyi just for reality sake, those specs, as they stand do not necessarilly mean that you don't have OTHER slower components.... and/or that its not your VIDEO card slowing your loads.
you wouldn't necessarilly know unless you tried different ram, mobo, maybe a higher watt psu.
some...
ddr5 is better than ddr3
40nm compared to 55nm, enough said there.
nVidia 200/400 series double as heat generation plants.
i ordered a 5850 today, nVidia fell off the wagon in my opinion.:(
i have a gigabyte motherboard. i have RMA'ed it TWICE.
both times there was nothing wrong and they tested it, flashed the bios, and stress tested it.
never charged me anything, when they should of. in the end, they helped me figure out it was my evga8800 that went bad.
I rma'ed a...
