    Learning Linux, how?

I can't see how that can apply whatsoever. Windows nowadays isn't built on top of DOS, it's a whole different kernel. Linux nowadays however is a headless install of the kernel, with a GUI on top. It's a completely different way of doing things. If you learn the command line in Windows, you...

    Learning Linux, how?

Googling isn't exactly the same as learning though is it? The OP has said he wants to learn Linux. Just pointing and clicking things doesn't teach a whole lot about Linux, it just teaches you how to use it to do the same as you already are on a desktop. If you want to learn how it works, and...

InterVLAN Routing on Layer 3 Switch

It would work, you don't have to use them addresses as broadcast and host, it's just a standard. As long as the device you are using it on can understand the use of /31 masks, you'll be okay :)

That's some good stuff, went through all of them. I'm showing that to a friend who runs a LAN party for his student union...this is SLIGHTLY larger scale :D

Must be a vastly different culture over in the US, over here I think I see maybe 1 out of every 40 or 50 job listings mentioning a degree, and something like 1 in every 10 of them listing it as anything more than "desirable". Networking wise anyway.

And yet I don't know anyone personally in IT with either of the two. Swings and roundabouts. Everyone is going on their personal experience and placing it off as fact, or as near as. Most of the people where I work, have gone from the very frontline, right to the top, whether in...

Would anyone move for better broadband access?

Seems odd when people complain about 6-8mb to me, over on this side of the atlantic, 8 meg is doing rather well. I've the got the highest broadband speed in my family (all of us in same general area), and I've not even got a full 8. Would I move for better broadband speeds? Not specifically...

    VLAN / IPv6 Config on Cisco 3750

Yeah, reload the switch if you haven't already, do the IPv6 routing command, and then try assigning IPv6 addresses to a port, and see if it takes it.

Flawless victory. This would make as much sense as anything.

    Post Your Connection Speed

Sky Broadband over in the UK. Definitely not the best, the upload is better at certain times (although it never gets over half a meg to be fair). I'll be glad when Fibre is installed nationwide over here, and I can get some decent speeds (although even ADSL 2+ would be nice...)

    Speed Difference

Even so, the technology you are using is already two revisions old (G and N have come out since), and was already iffy at best as it was. If you use a newer router/access point, you'll see a marked improvement over what you see now.

    Passed BCMSN today!

Congrats, I unfortunately failed BSCI today (20 marks off passing goddamnit). I'm gonna brush up on what I missed (although I missed what I was good at on my last attempt....), and have another crack at it soon :) Not sure how recent it is since you did the CCNA, but how would you compare the...

    IPv6 Stateless vs. Stateful

Nope, what if these networks aren't yours? Where I work, we have customers who connect in, via routers we send out, using leased lines into us, or our router acting as a VPN device, but the customers network beyond that is blind to us. If they are acting as a gateway to say, POS terminals or...

    IPv6 Stateless vs. Stateful

Because it already exists out there, and IPv4 isn't far off getting to a point where places requesting new IP blocks wont be able to get them in IPv4, as there wont be any left. You do realise NAT can break some applications functionality, and makes things a dog to troubleshoot at times? If one...

    IPv6 Stateless vs. Stateful

I've been doing the old Hurricane Electric tunnel route at home, once I'm not tied to the ISPs router I think I may go IPv6-only internally, even if just for the challenge. I'm gonna try pushing IPv6 harder where I am, who knows, with enough shouting and scaremongering they may go for it...

    Cisco Router vs Cisco PIX

I don't even know why you are wanting to go on the Cisco route on this one to do something so simple. Archivalbackup has the best solutions in my opinion.

In terms of network admin jobs, it isn't necessary to have the degree or certs. Your best bet is to get onto the helpdesk in a company which does network administration or something like that, and then get friendly with the guys on the networking teams. A degree in my experience doesn't help as...

    IPv6 Stateless vs. Stateful

You'd still need some way of traversing the IPv4 internet to get to the IPv6 stack, as very few places run IPv6 lines natively, and if there's no provision for translating/tunneling IPv6 packets, you aren't going to get very far. However if it's within an organization rather than from external...

    IPv6 Stateless vs. Stateful

xphil3: Slightly off topic, but how far is the adoption of IPv6 where you are, and how long have you been using it? I'm facing a bit of an uphill battle where I work to get anyone to even consider that IPv6 is something that might be worth at, or at least looking beyond the fact that the IPs...

    Network node IP addressing standard?

I'm not sure of a standard practice for putting specific devices, but RFC 1918 covers private address ranges, which means you use addresses from the following ranges so they are not routable publically 10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255 172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255 You'll...

Can FIOS be shared like this?

Unfortunately you are, because this is still a customer based product. Starbucks are set up with their own profile with whatever ISP they are using, so it will be understood that it isn't Starbucks surfing porn sites and warez forums. However, given you will be one customer, all onus will come...

    Some questions for Network Engineers

Don't know if the old CCNA was different, but the CCNA now has EIGRP, OSPF, VLANs and VTP, Frame Relay, Spanning Tree, some IPv6, and NAT, along with other technologies. If you are going to get into networking and don't know these technologies, you barely stand a chance. I'm working in...
