    Threadripper and Windows 7

Glad to have tested these. The ones that google search shows didn't match these KBs. So far after a half dozen reboots, that "unsupported hardware" does NOT appear. At this point, I will no longer do any updates since I know one of those two is the problem. I am staying away from these 4...

    Threadripper and Windows 7

So on most of my previous installs, I did all the KBs, and never kept track of which one caused the unsupported hardware error. And when uninstalling them, the unsupported hardware error remained. So I did NOT do these two updates below, which could be the culprits, but it's too early to tell...

    Threadripper and Windows 7

I've installed Windows 7 on the MSI Carbon X399, Samsung NVMe 960 M.2 (PCIe), and everything works exactly as it's supposed to. Have had this setup for months now (since late August), along with Windows 10 and macOS Sierra (more recently). All solid, including prime95 torture. Only minor issues...

    GTX 690 $999 @ newegg

I happen to get one card per day from EVGA directly. Got 2 already and could have had one per day if they didn't have a household limit. Make sure you set up your account way in advance, and refresh page quickly. And type as fast as hell. Reading credit card from eyes to brain to keyboard must...

Anyone else think that Video Card Prices are out of Control!?!

Got an email from EVGA. 5:59PM today, saying the 690 is ready and can be ordered now. So I looked up "now" in the dictionary to find the meaning. It defines now as this: "at the present time or moment" At 6:01, sold out. I guess 2 minutes wasn't now enough. haha

Anyone else think that Video Card Prices are out of Control!?!

Crosshairs, I guess that sets the precedent most of the time. Still, crazy. Don't get me wrong, I'm tempted, but logic kicks in. There will probably be shortages for a long time.

Anyone else think that Video Card Prices are out of Control!?!

690's are going for $1750-$2500 on ebay (that's what they're asking, obviously not selling). Found a few local from craigslist for $1600. Still, seems ridiculous to pay that much.

    CPU throttle monitoring app ?

Awesome. That Throttle Stop was cool. Had a benchmark setting where we can enter the threads too so you can see it peak. Got the answer I was looking for. Basically all 16 cores burst to 3300MHz at the max, and stay there. Temps were in line too, so it could sustain that. Thanks.

    CPU throttle monitoring app ?

Found an app called RealTemp v 3.70. It shows that the 2900 MHz CPU's maxing out at 3300-3520 during the tests. Idle at 2300MHz. Any other apps which show each core?

    CPU throttle monitoring app ?

I have a dual E5-2690 (16 cores/32 threads) setup on a Supermicro X9DAi and we're trying to see if the CPU throttling is bursting properly. Testing is being done with Windows 7 64bit. Are there any apps for that can show the actual speeds that are running? This would be great during a test to...

    Desktops to VM's

terisk, thanks. I'll stick with ESXi since I'm comfortable with it. funny, I always try to help everyone out, but there's something about office neighbors which gives them a free ticket to ask for 24/7 tech support.

    Desktops to VM's

they just do architecture CAD, so nothing video intensive. No 3D renderings or anything.

    Desktops to VM's

Some are CAD workstations, so I wanted to make sure the graphics can handle 1920x1200 at least.

    Desktops to VM's

I only know server stuff, so I feel dumb asking about this. I thought that PCoIP is also considered as a thin client. I assume something like this can work directly with windows remote desktop connection? http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/Wyse-S10-Thin-Client-Geode-GX-366-MHz/1117534.aspx...

    Desktops to VM's

Assuming you can't just use these PCoIP devices to connect to ESXi VM's without the whole View licensing right? http://www.evga.com/products/moreInfo.asp?pn=124-IP-PD02-KR&family=PCoIP&sw=11

    Desktops to VM's

Thanks guys. Seems the best method is the built in Win RDP for them. VMware View licensing seems too high. I'll check out ebay for PCoIP devices as well. I appreciate all the advice.

    Desktops to VM's

Either method sounds good. They already have some low powered PC's with Win7. What's the client software called to connect to a VM for the desktop users? The $250 each sounds good too. Which models are around $250? I priced a few around $400-500 and HP had one for $280. Any recommendations...

    Desktops to VM's

An office neighbor needs to replace 6 old workstations into one ESXi server, and have each station connect via a terminal to the VM's. Assuming ESXi on the server side, what are some good methods to have terminals get connected? Anything else required on the ESX side? I heard there are...

    VMware proper cloud datastores

Thanks for your kindness. Never read anything in a negative was. I know you guys are all being cool, and I'm grateful for that. I have a few friends who are VCP, but I hate asking them for favors. Some people just make you feel like you owe them for life, even when you frickin' pay...

    VMware proper cloud datastores

The 100Mbit was just the link between datacenters. I try to type and post fast and can't get my thoughts across sometimes. Definitely not bridging storage across the datacenters. And you're right about the low cost storage options on the HCL, instead of just the software. In this case I better...

    VMware proper cloud datastores

Most of the servers are supermicro and on the HCL. And if they're not, I'll make sure not to use them. Can't mess around with this stuff. I'm reconsidering the storage options as you guys mentioned it's the most essential. Better sit down with someone who's set this stuff up and make a plan...

    VMware proper cloud datastores

Vader, I didn't want to sit here picking everyone's brain when I should probably be hiring a VCP and doing things properly (just out of respect for you guys, and me not looking so moronic). I'm trying to accomplish a dual datacenter cloud, maximum redundancy, within means. Company is...

    VMware proper cloud datastores

I guess iSCSI is the way to go here. I've gotten great performance with bonding 8x GigE ports into a good switch, to the hosts. If I remember properly, I got near 220MB/s on VM's with my last test with 2 ports on the hosts, simultaneously on 4 hosts. Assuming you guys are VCP?
  27. L

    VMware proper cloud datastores

yes. I had a testbed set up at the datacenter with 8 hosts and 1 iSCSI via open-e. I figured I should ask if NFS is a viable option as well. The storage is a 3U server with 16 bays in a raid 10 for 16TB (2 of those). The license for open-e is approximately $1K for 16TB. If NFS does the job too...

    VMware proper cloud datastores

You guys think open-e iSCSI is better, or a default CentOS NFS install for storage devices? 16TB open-e is roughly $1,000 per machine. They're both on a 10.0 network direct to the hypervisors.
  29. L

    VMware proper cloud datastores

Definitely. I have a bunch of ESX's and they all load off 8GB usb's. Built a couple of open-e machines today, so that should do the trick. Fun stuff. VMware has changed a lot since 2004. Different world it seems.

    VMware proper cloud datastores

Sorry. In a professional high-end VMware cloud setup, for total redundancy, is it ok to use the datastore on an ESXi machine? I know it works. Just curious in a real cloud environment if it's not recommended. Instead, just to use iSCSI servers separately.
  32. L

    VMware proper cloud datastores

I was wondering, do most of the higher-end vCenter cloud deployments have totally separate storage servers from the hypervisors? For example multiple iSCSI storage units, and separate ESXi's. I assume that would be the proper way. However, is it OK to use one large 24TB datastore that exists...

    ESXi Passthrough not activating

I checked the compatibility list and it shows the X9 boards as supported by ESXi 5.0 U1. Only reason I brought this up was inconsistent benchmark results OUTSIDE of ESXi. Win7, RH 6, and MacOS 10.7 all installed fine, however, only Win 7 had the highest consistent benchmark score. Other people...

    ESXi Passthrough not activating

Hi. Glad I found this thread. I have a few X9 systems I'm making ESXi 5 machines out of. Seems like the released boards have plenty of issues. I guess the kernels aren't ready yet either. X9DAi and X9DRi with 128GB RAM and pair od E5-2690's. I've been benchmarking a few different setups, and...

    SATA 2.5" to 3.5" adapter?

just trying to place 2.5" SSD's in 3.5" hot swap bays. I just need to find an adapter that can place the drive similar to the picture. I could just take the drive and connect it directly to the backplane, but it wont have any mounting support. it needs to mound into a 3.5" tray, with 3.5"...

    SATA 2.5" to 3.5" adapter?

I'm trying to find an adapter to match this WD case. Basically, the SATA connector location MUST be in the exact spot in order to fit into the hot swap drive bays. anybody find a solution yet besides yanking these WD's out of the tray and using the tray?
