Ehhh, I've been a member here for 10 years. Don't let the noob sig fool ya. Get over the memory usage statement already. The 36% percent was on a fresh install. I don't care what anyone says, I don't want any OS hogging that kind of memory sitting idle on the desktop. Even with prefetch...
Except Vista doesn't perform any faster then Ubuntu. Prefetch or not. I'm not here to debate memory usage. Vista is a memory hog, end of story. But that was only a small reason for dumping it. Hell, Windows 7 may be the second coming of the pc world. If so great. But for now, I am much happier...
Wow, hey the memory thing was just a passing observation. I alway thought prefetch was a joke anyway. This isn't a comment on what OS is better. I stated that. It's based on my experience. There's a lot of room for improvement on the Linux end as well. But I'm not gonna apologize for preferring...
I've been using MS OS's since DOS. So needless to say, I'm pretty good with Windows.
And I was absolutely staunch in my view that Windows was the best OS period. For better or for worse. A few months ago I thought I'd give Ubuntu a try. Mostly out of boredom. It installed easily, and I had no...
Your gonna need Samba for your networking needs. It will be in the repository's. As to backing up ubuntu, there are are few good ones out there. But the ones I messed with makes a bootable image file that you can put on a DVD. Just do a google search for Ubuntu back up. I realize this is pretty...
Actually, it's considered to be one of the greatest commercials ever made. Everyone remembers it, but how many remember what teams were playing in that super bowl? I couldn't tell ya without looking it up.
duh.
What planet do you live on? And I wouldn't put a Creative sound card in your machine let alone my own. And Linux still can't come up with unified audio support. Pulse Audio? What are you kidding? I also wouldn't use any MS driver, especially for my mobo.
I think what people forget to think about is driver optimization. It would seem to me there is no way an open source driver would ever compete with a proprietary one. Take Nforce chipsets for example. Your gonna tell me Linux is better at bringing out the full potential of the motherboard over...
Try installing Ubuntu. With your specs, you should have no trouble installing it. If you had, say, a P2 that would be different. Sounds like XFCE doesn't dig your system for some reason.
VirtualBox supports 3d acceleration. Just make sure to install your guest service (vista compatibility mode) once you get Windows 7 installed. Also, make sure you have video memory, in your virtual box set up, turned up all the way. It will use up to half your vid memory if you set it that way.
Flash runs just fine on Ubuntu 64 with some minor modifications. I don't care how much better Linux is with memory..If your not using 64 bit, you cant see all 4 gigs.
Ubuntu is a total Linux juggernaut. I've tried 7 different distros, but nothing came close IMHO. I really don't think you can go wrong with Ubuntu. But use Ubuntu 64. You wont get access to all your ram with the 32bit version.
I meant XBMC sorry. Don't get me wrong. I really want to like this app. But every time I play a video it crashes one me. I dunno, maybe it has to do with pulse audio. Hopefully one day Linux will come up with an audio standard. I may try it on XP on Virtual Box to see if I have any better luck.
HTPC is a pretty app, but not quite ready for prime time. It's a little glitchy. When ever I try to use on screen remote to fast forward or pause, it locks up the entire system and I have to reboot. It might be my hardware config, but I doubt it. And it's media navigation leaves something to be...
Linux has nearly 20 thousand apps. I'm seeing the same old uninformed arguments by windows sheep. I am so glad I freed myself of the albatross that is windows. If you prefer windows, great. But don't go on about how great it is, because it isn't. Linux has made huge gains in the last few years...
I use Ubuntu Ultimate 2.0. Great distro. Has some great dvd "backup" software. I've really just been diving into the nuts and bolts of the os, so I havn't tried alot of the apps out there yet. The more comfortable I get with Linux in general, the more I just despise windows.
I have no interest in blu-ray, at least until the price point for both the player and the disks come way the hell down. Things like, I dunno, my mortgage and 2 car payments are a little more important. For now my up-converting dvd player does just fine.
I was at Borders last night looking at a few books. I actually ended up ordering The Ubuntu Bible 2008, because it was $20 cheaper on line. I don't know if your looking for something distro specific or just linux in general. But they seemed to have some decent books. You really need to go to a...
I'd agree, Ubuntu is the way to go. OpenSuse is ok, I just didn't think it's menu layout is very intuitive. But I'm sure its like anything else Linux, it's just a matter of learning it. I do like the KDE version of Ubuntu (kubuntu) as well.
I think its hilarious that we use Linux so we can use VBox so we can use a diffrent os's. Guilty as charged. You might try XBMC Media center. Pretty much a Windows media center clone. You for sure want Compiz and Avant windows navigator if your into desktop eye candy. Try...
Wow, that is so cool. Just installed it. I also figured out how to launch my virtualbox OS's using desktop launchers instead of having to actually launch virtualbox itself. The more I learn about linux, the more I come to realize that windows is just pointless. That is of course unless your a gamer.
Ok, well lets set aside the eye candy thing. How about in general? It just seems to me these distros, aside from the 2 major kernels, are a lot alike. I realize some of them are lite versions, some are for multimedia and some for servers and such. But really, you would think they would unify...
I'm currently running Ubuntu Intrepid. I have been trying various distros on virtual box, and I'm kinda digging openSuse. So I'm wondering what the real diffrences between gnome and kde are and which you like better. From what I've been reading it would seem gnome is a little more mature right...
Im pretty happy with Ubuntu. I have openSuse on my virtual drive. That seems like a cool OS. Although, I dont think it's nearly as intuitive as Ubuntu. I think its just a gnome vs KDE thing. I know alot of the hardcore users seem to prefer KDE but I'm still learning this stuff. But I'm having fun!
First question..more then likely.
Second question...Ubuntu has its own native compiler. See Nvida's documentation on how to compile the binary.
Third Question. Most ID/Blizzard games will, but you will be disappointed if you want Linux as a gaming platform. MS wont give up directx code so most...
Google works really well. That's how I'm learning it. Just type ubuntu and what ever topic you need info on. You'd be amazed how much other stuff on ubuntu you find out by doing it that way.
I would consider myself an average everyday user. Albeit I'm a bit more knowledgeable, but I, as a Linux user, would disagree as I'm sure most Apple users would also. Since we all know that OSX is as dumbed down as it gets. ;)
I guess everyone's experience is obviously different depending on there hardware and experience level.
For me it's been pain free and just a lot of fun to play with. I'm using ubuntu on both my main system (see signature) and on a 3 year old Toshiba laptop and they both work perfectly, for what...
I'd go along with what dragon master said. Although, I didn't have the issues with video card drivers he did cause I'm using a nvidia card. Also, There is some where between 10k and 20k apps for linux. I would consider that a ton of apps as well.
Linux flat out does everything I want it to do. Including running windows apps better then windows. This whole "linux has bad driver support" is lame. I had no driver issues at all. Everything just worked out of the box. I also don't agree with "I don't have time to learn a new OS" . BS, your...
Over the years I find that the so called hardware gurus don't know jack about Windows. Or at least how it truly works. But then why would they. They just want to game one it. Seems like a waste to me. If you really want to be good with computers, you have the master the software side of it. I...
Ive been using Ubuntu for just over 2 weeks. I absolutely love it. Desktop eye candy using compiz and Avant window navigator, blows the doors off of Vista. I have had no issues. It installed and worked out of the box. On both my main pc and my 3 year old laptop. I keep XP on VirtualBox and it...
