I haven't tried 30" portrait, but I don't want to... I can turn my chair left/right a lot easier than I can look up and down. I used to do 4 portrait screens + 1 wide screen, but I do a lot more PowerPoint than I used to, and portait screens aren't as so handy for that.
You guys have some great set-ups. I posted a while back; recently made a few changes and ended up with 11440x1600. I am also running the HP LP2065 on the right (and have 3 more in the closet from when I was running 4x20 + 1x30).
The monitor on the left tends to be Outlook 2010 in a VM, the...
Definitely mousing can be a problem -- with very fast acceleration, a lot of keyboard control, and shortcuts programmed into the ErgoDex, it's not much different physically than a single small screen. It took a while to work through the logistics of the mouse, though.
I also found making the...
No, for a few reasons--
1. I turn my body slightly.
2. I generally am debugging on the left and casually looking at code on the right, or coding on the right and casually looking at the crash on the left.
3. I sit a little further back than I do from a single monitor system.
4. For...
I guess I could see it might work better for artwork vs text. Or maybe having the bottom row very tilted (like what Stefan Didak has). I spent about 2 months trying various configurations and just couldn't get comfortable with it.
For artwork, I wonder if it would make more sense to have...
I'm a little late getting caught up in the forums, but having gone through a lot of this:
- I personally find matching vertical resolutions important if you drag a lot of windows from one monitor to another.
- I tried stacking monitors before and found it gave me huge headaches and generally...
Thanks! The height above my head when I'm at my desk is about 42" or so--pretty high. I am 6'4", and I don't feel like the world is crashing in on me. Clearly I cannot stand up in the whole room--but having the vaulted ceiling helps tremendously with the illusion of drama and space.
For those discussing the Bush Series C desk -- my desk is out of that set. I highly recommend it -- very good for the price, and a heck of a lot of modules.
My desktop is 9920 x 1600. I've found it helps to sit back a little further and have the monitors a little "flatter"--it looks like in your picture that you have the angles pretty tight around the corner of a desk.
Of course, this requires having a large enough physical space. :-)
Hope...
I just got my DroboPro today and am working on setting it up and waiting for some more disks, but so far I am very happy with it. I will post more later once I have it up in its real environment; just doing some testing with some drives I had laying around today.
How are you attaching the legs to the table top? I know that Ikea sells the "metal frame" that attaches to the bottom, but do they sell it seperately from the Galant tops?
Thinking about building a self-standing "keyboard tray" using the Galant legs.
Yeah, it's a disaster behind the desk. I bought these 24 AWG DVI cables that are sort of like old mainframe bus cables--extremely inflexible and screaming for a raised floor. They are very sturdy and solved some issues I was having with longer cheaply made DVI cables, but they make keeping the...
Er, those were construction shots. The room was actually 2 rooms + a huge closet before; it's now a large room with a small network closet. My contractors ripped out walls, took out all the wiring, redid the floors, new insulation, etc.
Thought I'd post an update for mine. This is my full-time office; I'm in here 80 hours a week right now (too many, I know).
FAQ here: http://www.biscade.com/office/
Thanks! No, no .NET--I haven't done any Windows native coding for 6 years now and I'm happy with that.
Because I get these questions so much, I threw together a quick FAQ of actual questions I've gotten.

Hope that helps.
Sadly it's:
The Freestyle Solo utilizes a quiet, low-force, tactile membrane key switch. Rated at 10 million operations the Solo will provide years of comfortable typing.

The key switches were initially very disappointing when I...
Thanks. The keyboard is a customized Kinesis Freestyle. I have three of them and highly recommend them, despite the cost. I recommend getting the 20" cable instead of the 8". I'm fairly tall and have broad shoulders; after using these for a year, I found my posture has improved...
Yep, all on one computer. 8 cores, 12 GB of RAM. I think the office altogether has ~24 cores, 54 GB of RAM. Most of the computer use serial consoles so I just have 11 monitors including a laptop. More pictures on flickr (link above).
No matrix ports in the back of my head (or anywhere...
Thanks. The other thing I did "right" was putting some outlets near the desk 35" off the floor--i.e., so that they are above the surface of the desk, rather than 18" from the floor. In highsight, I should have done more raised outlets, and maybe some Ethernet ports at that level too...
Thought I'd share this updated picture of my main workstation.

Great setups, guys!
Thanks for the nice comments.
I write code for distributed software products, mostly. I do some consumer stuff on the side or full-time from time to time. Generally work in C and Python, some other stuff too though. Sorry for being so vague; I am really a jack of all trades and do a lot...
Hi guys, I found this thread a few weeks ago. It took forever to get through the whole thing. :-) I am really happy to see I'm not the only guy out there with Ergotron gear!
My main workstation is a 8 core Mac Pro w/ 12 GB of RAM and there's a Linux box that I use for a 2nd workstation...
