What do you think if the current hard drive prices? Good time to buy more drives? After almost a year, I think the prices finally started to go back to what they were before the Thailand flood.

Soundbar versus normal speaker for pc audio?

Ok, thanks. The whole reason for me to get the soundbar is to enable different device to share same audio output and reduce cable clutter at the same time, so running AV receiver and speaker wires throughout the room is not an option.

Soundbar versus normal speaker for pc audio?

I was going to buy a new pair of pc speaker, but realize that a soundbar system maybe better because a soundbar has multiple audio inputs which I can also use for different devices. With pc speaker, I can only use it with pc. I am mainly purchasing this for my bedroom. I have many devices that...

    5400RPM or 7200RPM for RAID5/6

Going to build a new RAID 5/6 array using a Sans Digital 8-bay enclosure. Initially, I will start with 4 drives RAID5, will gradually add new drives and migrate to RAID6 as my need increases. Now, what drive should I choose? 2TB or 3TB? 5400RPM or 7200RPM? Is 3TB reliable enough? For...

    Please recommend good eSATA cable

My WHS lose connection to my external eSATA box intermittently. I know it is caused by the loose connection between the esata connector and the esata ports. Is this the nature of the eSATA? If not, what's the best esata cable to get so the connection is not loose?

backup solution: a new NAS or 2nd WHS/SBS for backup?

Is it necessary to run hard drive test before using the drives?

That's a good tip. :-) I tested my 2nd drive while I sleep. It is now more fun to test the drives, gives me more confident. One more question, after you tested the drives using the manufacturer's utility, do you still test it for a few more days by moving actual data in/out of it before...

backup solution: a new NAS or 2nd WHS/SBS for backup?

I already have a WHS V1 system and will build another system using WHS2011 or SBS2011 soon. I want a simpler solution to backup my important files like photos and my favorite movie, tv shows. Is having two WHS/SBS server good enough if I duplicate my files on the two servers? Or is a NAS...

Is it necessary to run hard drive test before using the drives?

Ok, thanks all! Just finished testing one 2TB 5k3000 drive with the Hitachi Drive Fitness utility, took 6 hours, found 0 errors. That's a lot of time, but I think it is worth it. Maybe in the future, I will have a low spec machine dedicate to hard drive testing so it doesn't tied up my pc.

Is it necessary to run hard drive test before using the drives?

Ok, I got two Hitachi 5300 series drives and went to their website to download the Hitachi Drive Fitness Test program. But the program only runs in DOS mode, definitely a little outdated in the modern world. The worse yet is it will take more than 40 minutes (or even hours) to run the test...

Great! That's good to know. I will do the same. I may run both WHS V1 and V2 as VM. Using V1 for various size drives and V2 for large drives, so I can get the best of both worlds.

Virtual disk versus physical for WHS 2011 on HyperV

Ok, so only hyperV VM can read the data. I think I am fine with that. This actually makes data more secure since not everyone can see the content of the disk unless they have hyperV.
