Is Ubuntu getting bloated and slow?

I have been using ubuntu for 6 months. I have not realised any slowdown so far, it's actually as fast and responsive as the first day. Check the processes running in the background.

"I'm happy with my current S775 setup" club

What's up with these "i am happy" threads? Some kind of group therapy? Besides that, i think there is a poll in this section about nehalem adoption rate. Either way, my name is George and i am happy with the setup in my sig:)!

Let's get some numbers here: i7 adoption rate...

First i want to see the platform overall. 3 cpus and one chipset doesn't tell me anything. I want to see many models from $200 to $500 and of course the AMD's response (if any).

    e8400?

    1) The price difference is rather small, go with the e8500. 2) I think you will, it's not only the 1Ghz difference but the 5Mb more l2 cache which is very important to games. I hope that helps you. No let me make you a few questions: 1) What apps do you use? 2) Do you change cpu's very...

    New gaming rig, $1400 budget

Get a bigger hdd, i recommend you this. As for the heatsink better go with one of them:TRUE, Scythe Ninja, Mugen or Zipang. The rest of the system is very good!

Why did you chose Intel over AMD?

About a year ago i was searching for a new system. I decided to wait to see the AMD response. Among other things i was reading about intelligent frequency management between the cores, monolithic quad core against intel's "fake" quad and so on. Phenom was announced for september...september...

    I am SO HAPPY!!!

Linux is renowned for resurrecting old systems! So, you are using a totally free system, as your hardware was given to you and the software is free by default! Congrats, you got the spirit of free computing;)!

What torrent application do you use?

Azureus Vuze. Nice interface, many options and the most important, OS agnostic.
  22. K

Which OS to install for this PC?

Your machine is going to be resurrected by any Linux distribution. I suggest Ubuntu for ease of use, Puppy Linux or DSL ( Damn Small Linux ) for minimal computational resources.

Nasty Dilemma: 680i LT vs. P35 for Q6600

This is a hybrid board ( supports both ddr2 / ddr3 ). These boards are not famous for their stability and, besides that i don't think that you are interested in ddr3. So, i recommend you to stay away from this board and instead buy the EP35-DS3R.

    G9 Pros and Cons

-Actually, i find it beautiful! -Yes, it's not cheap but it's a lot cheaper than a couple of months ago. I think with the current price it's not expensive for what it gives. -Agreed -Yes, i would prefer them on the right.

    G9 Pros and Cons

I bought it recently. The mouse feels very robust and the scroll wheel is awsome! All these programmable buttons it has will truly help you when gaming or just surfing. For example i use the two side buttons for grenade / reload when gaming and back / forward when surfing. As soon as you find...

"upgrade" or build new pc? looking for some opinions on what to do.

Welcome dyslexicferengi:)! I'm pretty sure that your motherboard supports quad core processors, at least 65nm parts. Besides that, you say that the reason for building a new system is that your existing can't support quads but for the new system you are about to buy a dualcore:confused:? If you...

    Looking for some quiet fans...Opinions?

All 80mm Silenx fans i have owned were trash. In theory they are good but in fact they are more noisy then average fans and also more expensive. Zalman ZM-F1 are superior and much more cheaper. I'm using them in my download server. I also hear very good things about scythe fans, although i have...

first computer build in 2.5 years

Actually is a very good board. I suggest you to take a look in the [H]ard|OCP review. Also you can find Maximus formula (X38) in lower price. However If you don't intend to push your cpu to the limits and all you need is a board with 2 x 16 lanes for your crossfire configuration there is no...

6GB of RAM - Page file? Swap File? Need it? What is it?

Actually swapping and paging are totally different. When your ram is not enough for all the programs you are running there are 2 solutions: 1.Swapping In this case the programs are running for an interval of time(they are inside the ram) and after that they are moving in the hard drive in...

Nasty Dilemma: 680i LT vs. P35 for Q6600

  35. K

    What's the better pick? E8500 or Q6600?

Aftermarket cooler in HIGHLY recommended for these speeds. Both for good temps ( which affects cpu longevity) and low noise.

    gaming on linux?

The best solution is dual boot (Vista & Linux). You can try this : Linux as your main operating system (it can do anything, better than vista) and Vista for gaming only. Think Vista partition like a playstation 3 inside your pc!
  37. K

    AMD overdrive and vista 64

Run it as administrator. You must also know that under vista 32 you gain better overclocks that with vista 64. I know, it sounds weird but it is due to the bigger number of active registers(some kind of ultra high speed memories inside the cpu) under vista 64.

Nasty Dilemma: 680i LT vs. P35 for Q6600

We are saying the same thing. No need for something else if you don't plan crossfire.
  39. K

Nasty Dilemma: 680i LT vs. P35 for Q6600

No, the P35 chipset is perfect, just forget about any gigabyte board which ends with "L" and look for P35-DS3 (vanilla) or P35-DS3R. They both have 6-phase power circuit and 8-pin molex for processor. Also they have 6 (vanilla) and 8 (DS3-R) sata ports. They are far more suitables for quads and...

Wolud you still buy a new LGA 775 system now?

Of course! Actually with the ridiculous low prices of ddr2, quadcore cpus and graphics cards this is a great season to build a new pc. Don't forget that Nehalem is not only a new platform but also a major change in Intel cpus architecture..so expect high prices, a lot of motherboard revisions...
