    Overclocking life expectancy

I don't know if I have ever had a CPU die but I tend to keep the voltage close to stock and use good cooling. I have boxes of old boards that still work from 20+ years ago (ever overclock an 8088 or Z80? :D). I have had more than a few motherboards die due to bad capacitors though. I have a...

Other ISPs May Be Getting Ready to Filter

Really this is just going to drive everything to totally encrypted protocols if ISP's start doing this. That would be a good thing though. Since processors are getting pretty quick with multiple cores and such the overhead for encryption is reduced. It will be tougher on the server side but...

Crysis 1.1 patch is OUT with Multi GPU updates!

WOW, I guess you didn't see the little smilies. Damn, who pissed in your Barney cup? :) :) :) :) :) I managed to find the solution simply by hitting Google with the error I was getting. People blaming the software when they're running a non-standard configuration is like blaming Intel when...

Crysis 1.1 patch is OUT with Multi GPU updates!

You know what's retarded? Not reading the first page of this thread. Specifically the first sentence of the 12th post on this thread. :D But hey, I'm lazy sometimes too. ;)

Crysis 1.1 patch is OUT with Multi GPU updates!

The EVGA site has had the 169.28 drivers on there for a while now. Are these beta NVIDIA drivers the same thing since they have the same number? Why would EVGA have them way earlier than NVIDIA even putting them into beta?

    CoreTemp0.96 - M0 stepping C2D Tj Max??

Yeah, the problem is on some systems like Linux I don't have any applets that show the raw DTS value. Therefore I have to do the best I can based on what I know. I have gone back and forth on the issue but at the current time I'm thinking these chips they are saying have a 100°C Tj Max are...

HOWTO: Edit your G92 based card's BIOS for fan speed adjustments

Yours runs at 100% until Windows is loaded? What kind of card? Mine spins up to 100% only when I cold start the machine (not reset) and then it only does it for like 1 second before the BIOS is initialized. I'm using an EVGA card.

    CoreTemp0.96 - M0 stepping C2D Tj Max??

Although it has been said the Tjunction Max is 100°C I have never seen an official Intel specification that says this so who knows. I'm not sure where they are getting that from because as far as I can tell the official Intel processor datasheet does not list the Tjunction Max.

    Seagate 500GB HD problem

Hmm, I got one back at the beginning of November from Newegg. It has the SD04 firmware but also the 0 cache thing in HD Tune. Anyone know why it would be running in UDMA mode 5 instead of 6? HD Tune image: I'm pissed at Seagate right now too because after waiting 2 weeks for a warranty...

Any interest/need for pre/re-programmed BIOS chips?

Do boards still get bricked from a bad BIOS load? I would've thought they solved that problem by now (with dual BIOS chips or something). I remember my first BIOS modification many years ago. It was a 286 machine and back then all the hard drive sizes were hard-coded into the BIOS and it...

    Do you use a UPS?

Anyone know of a site that tests how well various UPS work? Something like a JonnyGURU for UPS's. You know, load the thing up and see if it meets the specifications. Hook it up to an oscilloscope and check the waveform and such. Check the switching time and how well it handles bad power...

    Ultra XVS 600w failed spectacularly!

Heh, this is one reason why I never leave my computers on (or even plugged in) when I'm away for more than a day. I have had everything from monitors (not turned on, just plugged in), power supplies, to simple power strips go up in smoke. Even high quality stuff goes bad. I once had a power...

Capturing videos from VCR to Hard drive with Radeon X1950 Pro

Does your capture card have a coaxial (cable TV) composite style input? If so then you could use that as it has both the video and audio. Set the card to channel 2/3/4 or whatever the VCR out is set to. Quality won't be as good though. Just a warning about composite connections, make sure...

OCZ HydroJet on Display at CES

Weird, doesn't look like any of the old pictures. If their claimed dissipation of 400W is true then you almost wish it had connectors to hook up some tubes to cool other stuff. Otherwise you're just gonna be wasting all that cooling power on a dinky little CPU.

Note: If you get an error about missing files in the CAB or somesuch while installing the patch then you need to put the intro movies back before installing. I tested at 1600x1200 2x AA all "High" settings using GPU benchmark - DX9 on XP - 8800GTS 512. Before patch (@ 670/970)...

    8800GT or GTS?

I have mentioned this in other threads but the GTS has a regular dual-slot heatsink that works a lot better out of the box. If you add the price of an aftermarket cooler to the GT combined with the GT's currently jacked up prices then the GTS is even more attractive.

Anyone know a fix for the Tagan-480 power-drop problem?

I have this 3-year-old old Tagan-480 PSU that has always had this problem where if it's on a UPS and the UPS cuts in the PSU just shuts off. There was some known issue with this that Tagan acknowledged. Tagan has a fix for it that disables the 220V or something like that but from what I...

svideo to tv gives black and white picture

My Geforce 5700 Ultra runs the S-Video in black and white until it loads the nVidia panel stuff after Windows boots. Pretty annoying because I use it in a media machine that looks bad booting in black and white. That machine normally runs Linux but I haven't tried it with that card yet, it...

Capturing videos from VCR to Hard drive with Radeon X1950 Pro

I'm assuming you're using RCA style component cables in which case you need to run the left and right audio-out from the VCR to the left and right audio-in on your capture card. Or to the line-in on your sound card if your capture card doesn't have audio-in connectors.

    Don't know what to do.

If you're thinking of spending $500-$600 then wait, otherwise I don't see much changing over the next year. I think the best bang for your buck is still going to be the 8800 G92's for a good while. With the current prices I took the 8800 GTS 512 over the regular GT. $330 at the Egg with...

    Effects of high temperatures

Holy crap that's hot for a server room. You're +20-30F higher than a normal server room. They probably won't last long like that. As already mentioned, the hard drives will probably be hit first. Sorry I don't have any specific documentation but it's pretty well known that the de facto...

Are my temps high for this OC? E2200, Abit IP35-E, Tuniq 120

That's pretty good. My E2200 @ 2.75 Ghz 1.27v runs hotter than that with the stock cooler. You're running way more voltage and speed. If I clocked mine like that it would probably run up to 90C or more. These things seem to run hot, I don't know why. Even if we completely ignore the...

Need a New heatsink since mines so scratched...

Is that high? Yours seem so nice compared to my E2200 which idles at 45-50C. That Thermalright Ultra Extreme Maxxxx POWER Killer Death Walker 120 is supposed to be the best. Seems too heavy to me though.

    8800GT Disappointing Me :(

Well, to be fair it depends on the game. In a game where reflexes are everything then rendering at 300+ FPS can be very useful. It's not about what you can see but rather how fast the engine is able to respond to you. In Quake2 & 3 I would turn off all the effects and run at low resolution...

    8800GT Disappointing Me :(

I have a 10 year old TNT2 card on an original Pentium 166 (OC to 225 Mhz,) machine that can render way over 400 FPS with just a couple polygons (ie. "looking at the sky"). People rave about these 8800GT's but now I'm beginning to think they suck. :p

Copper Celery Stick vs My Cat (weak new P3 vs old P3)

In that generation of chips there was not much difference in performance between the regular Pentium and the Celerons. The higher 850 Mhz Celeron is going to be faster even if you overclocked the other. The performance difference equivalent to comparing a modern E2xxx versus an E4xxx Duo of...

Major upgrade - no appreciable performance increase

I don't know why this is but generally it's much harder to tell when you're using a faster/better system. Try using your old system after a few months then it will be really apparent how slow it was. Plus you're really not going to have a "wow" type upgrade unless you go a long time (5+ years)...

abit IP35 Pro won't boot: stuck on post code 9.0?

There is definitely part of me that hopes it is not the motherboard. I got burned real bad with two BP6's and a VP6 motherboard years ago and vowed not to buy abit again. The IP35-Pro is my first abit since the ill fated VP6 and I hope that wasn't a mistake. People here seem to...

abit IP35 Pro won't boot: stuck on post code 9.0?

I was just guessing about the graphics card because a lot of people on the abit forum seemed to get their machine booting by using very old low-end video cards. Also someone had success not just reseting the CMOS but actually disconnecting all power and removing the CMOS battery for a few minutes.

abit IP35 Pro won't boot: stuck on post code 9.0?

Of course there are the normal things: Reset the CMOS using the switch on the back, remove/disconnect everything you can, try a different video card (a plain PCI card if possible), try different RAM if possible, try a different CPU (). Check Abit's forums...

Yeah, like I said, I'm not 100% certain this is a game. It just looked kinda like a game. It's computer generated as far as I can tell. I guess I am hoping it is a game. :) Could be anything though. Even a higher resolution of this still image would be cool. Something I didn't think of...

    6800NU Possible Meltdown?

Either that or the fan is dead. On my old 5700 Ultra the stock fan died after about a year. It made a lot of noise before going out. I replaced it with an Arctic Cooling fan which apparently silently died some time later and I didn't even know it until one day I had the case open and noticed...

Who screwed me over..Intel or Tuniq??

These temperatures are very close to what I get on my E2200. Using CoreTemp 0.96 I get about 45°C idle and 78°C with two Orthos running CPU-stress (small FFT). The raw delta to shutdown from the CPU reports 22°C. This is with a room temperature of about 18°C or less which is pretty cool. I'm...
