Probably buying a second pair of AKG K501 for like $150 or so off ebay some years ago. It may be my favorite headphone I own and being discontinued I figured I should have a backup set.
I probably put in like 10 minutes into this second set just to make sure it worked.
On the bright side...
A lot of Windows 10 stuff is up in the air. I've read rumors of everything up to making it eventually free to a annual subscription plan. I don't think Microsoft has even decided yet.
I dunno, from personal experience and from what I've read, they tend to crap out at an alarming rate.
The passive speaker route will give the best bang for the buck. Though if you want a simpler "computer speaker" route, Swans makes the best systems hands down.
I think the Beyerdynamic DT880 is a better choice than the Philips X1 mentioned a few times already. It feels lighter and matches the OP's musical preferences better.
Sure they are making money off youtube and all that. It's just the content of most of these "stars" are equal parts nauseating and iq-draining. I'd like to know exactly who finds these videos entertaining so I can completely avoid them in real life.
An optical to analog converter isn't that expensive. Here's just a cheap example:

If you want to go the usb audio route, I highly recommend the hifimediy sabre usb dac. There's cheaper, but for the price...
Guess what also - follow the head-fi community of non-pros and you get a lot of sheep and people giving recommendations and opinions based on stuff they never listened to. And of course you get the hype train reviews and FOTM headphones. The knife cuts both ways. Were you expecting me to post...
Is that what they charge you for the individual part or is that what it really costs them to produce?
Also the mindless Beats bashing by headphone nerds isn't quite so justifiable anymore. It's been accepted by most that have tried the newest revisions that they at least semi-decent...
Oh please. What do you think is the bill of materials for any medium end headphone? Do you seriously think making a HD595 costs more than a pair of Beats?
I think Swans makes the best "computer" speakers. They have a bunch of different setups depending on your price range. There's also self-powered studio monitors you can get which generally work well for near field.
If you go the T-Amp/bookshelf route, the Topping TP20 amp previously...
Arcsoft TotalMedia Theater was the best playback software until development ceased. Cyberlink is better than WInDVD, but they are both bloated messes. There aren't really any native playback options outside of that. PowerDVD 7 was bearable when it was around, but that was several versions ago...
The Toshiba Chromebook 2 is the only 1080p one with an IPS display. It is stuck with a slow Baytrail based processor.
The Chromebook market is getting oversaturated. I would assume in the later months companies would start using i3 processors or larger form factors in an attempt to...
The JVC's mentioned are big and bulky.
My suggestion is the criminally overlooked Beyerdynamic DT235. I know OP mentioned he can't really tell good SQ, but I feel it more than holds its own against anything in the sub $100 category. It's also lightweight, compact and has minimal clamp. The...
I second the Grado suggestion. They seemed to be overlooked a bit lately as other manufacturers churn out new models and eye catching designs. Their reputation for synergy with rock and acoustic music is absolutely deserved. The SR225 was traditionally considered the sweet spot in the...
Can anybody explain to me why everybody's so worked up about this? Their speakers suck, they had a couple decent budget headphones but only for their very low end price. Three of the last four cables I bought at monoprice failed in short order.
You can install Mavericks on a 2010 system. If you have access to another mac, it's a free download and there are guides on how to get it on a bootable USB stick.

Seems like pretty big news to make Chrome OS more of a serious OS than a glorified browser platform.
Microsoft has made some changes to make Windows cheaper for OEMs like "Windows with Bing" and and...
I was under the impression that Cambridge Soundworks was closer to Bose than Polk. By that I mean relatively heavy marketing and advertising, so-so performance. Perhaps you're mistaking them with Cambridge Audio which is completely different company and has a better reputation.
The above suggestion is good. The Micca speakers have gotten quite a few rave reviews for their price:performance. The added bonus is that they are small speakers and should fit a desktop space without being too obtrusive...
Also be aware that a lot of screen resellers will sometimes ship you a compatible screen than the model you choose. Screen resolution and connector, bracket, etc. placement would be the same but it may not be the exact model you choose. Everything would work fine, but it may be disappointing...
He didn't even try. All he had to do was BS about it with generic cliche catch phrases like it's "immersive" and puts you "right there in the middle of the action" blah blah blah.
It's not like the audience was expecting a technical spec rundown or overview of the new technology being...
You can just buy whatever laptop works best for you and add a SSD yourself. Of course, be aware that there are several SSD form and height factors depending on the laptop. And not all laptops, are tinkerer/fixer friendly SSD hybrids are faster than regular HDD's but they won't be anywhere...
I was going to suggest these monoprice ones
http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=108&cp_id=10823&cs_id=1082302&p_id=8323&seq=1&format=2
Then again, it seems like you might have them already lol.
How is the fan noise? Are you running into any slowdowns at all? Any issues with the display? I'm somewhat close to pulling the trigger on the same config you have. It seems this generation fixed up most of the issues of the previous release...
THIS. You don't try to catch a falling knife if it is based on legitimate internal and future weakness. How can MS so over-estimate interest in Surface and Windows RT? It can be argued that it was created as say a prototype to get manufacturers going or as a hedge against Intel's x86...
I've been out of the headphone audio loop for awhile now and I am curious how the classic Gilmore Lite stacks up nowadays. It was considered one of the best "budget" amps back a few years ago when I bought it. I'm sure it still holds its own to the competition. I tried looking up some...
If you want even cheaper, at 250 ohms, you can get the "Pro" version. Beyerdynamic Pro versions uses the same drivers as the "Premium" (consumer use) 250 ohm counterparts. The main differences are they have a coiled cord, slightly different aesthetics, cheaper case and I believe a tighter...
This. Mostly speaker mags and professional reviewers will offer some comparative review. The problem with end-user reviews are that you usually won't have a multi-speaker setups in the same room to compare them with. It wouldn't make sense unless you made that a hobby... As an end user, you...
