I did not record the sound of my replacement monitor, since the noise was similar. But my first monitor had its base frequency at 191Hz. It had some (nice) harmonics, and was a clear peak in the spectral analysis. So I don't think that's a harmonic.
(you meant 207Hz, didn't you?)

> rao: You should point out the dead pixel policy by other companies and ask for an exchange.
Unfortunatelly, the only answer I got, is that no other company has a better policy. They admitted, that this has been the case i the past, but are sure that now all other companies refer to the iso...
I had one completely dead pixel on the third replacement so I stayed with the 2nd replacement. Of course the screen is great except the issues. I'm just very sensitive to noise, and probably would be annoyed by the noise of your screen also.

Hi David,
an exchange is not going to work, since i managed to exchange it twice, but all I got has been a unit that was still noisy and had a dead pixel. Since I already tried to sell it, but would only have gotten 900 Euros for it, I will have to keep it for now. I will call NEC support...
Usually not.
I have 11 other NEC monitors in my working and private environment. There is one single faulty pixel on one single unit. Not to mention, that all of them are absolutely silent. This very good experiences made me choose the 2690 in the first place. So it seems that the faults are...
don't forget, it has been suspected from the start, that it's primarily the European version, that's affected. as travbomb pointed out, there have been nearly no complaints in the US.
rao
Yes, but if it would just be the hearing, why can we record the sound...
neither am I. This should be a lesson for all early adopters...
I was lucky and got my monitor with Rev 1E back. Its hum is a little bit more silent than that of the Rev 3A I'll be sending back. The Rev 1E has a more high...
... which would lead to the interesting question, if there is anyone with a revision 4B or higher in Europe, who does not hear anything in a silent environment.
rao
thanks a lot marylin.
even if that's bad news for me, because I would have been less frustrated, if I knew, that all units were affected. but knowing that NEC handles noise issues like dead pixels is a bit sad. so one might be lucky and get a silent unit. if we are even more lucky, the issue...
hi travbomb,
if there is any unit, that does not have the noise problem, could you tell us, starting with what hardware-revision s/n it should be gone?
at least rev. 3a s/n ...7xx still seems to be affected.

I also thought LCDs were silent. I got myself a 23" Cinema Display for one week to check if it's possible to build a large monitor that's silent. well it is...
I think now that we know that LCDs can be quite noisy, you simply have to check each model first.
rao
this could be very true, since that was the answer for all the 3 units I had in my hands. when I got one with rev. 3A and a 7xx serial I finally gave up. In my opinion, ALL 2690 have a little noise. Only that most people won't hear it or just don't care. It seems, that there has been another...
hi,
I'm located in Europe. Here up to 5 dead pixels are considered as being OK. I called my service center to verify NECs position on that...
Also see NEC's ISO special. On the Product spec page for the 2690 its clearly stated, that this monitor complies with ISO 13406-2 (pixel failure class...
hi,
I got my second replacement a few days ago. Mine is out of the 7xx serial number range and is revision 3A. It hums, and this time I even got a dead pixel. When I called my service center, who tested it first, they said, that the noise is within the specified parameters.
To check if I...
Hallo travbomb,
I've talked to the person responsible for the NEC repairs at the service center that's responsible for my area. She told me, that she had never heard of the problem, but was willing to ask if such a problem exists. She also gave me her email address and was very interested in...
it's the German Support of NEC Europe who claims not to know about a fix. Now that I have the phone number of their repair center, I hope that I can find out tomorrow, if they know something about this.

Hello travbomb,
thanks again for your help.
I always called the german hotline:
Hotline D, A, CH
Tel.: +49 (0) 89 99699 233
Address
NEC Display Solutions Europe GmbH
Landshuter Allee 12-14
80637 München
I called them again to ask where you should send your information to, and who worked...
If I were you, I would be quite happy with that. I just called my store again, and have been told that there is absolutely no chance to get my money back, as long as NEC would not accept the existence of my problem...

Hello travbomb,
thanks for your advice. I just called NEC support again, to verify if they think that they could solve my problem. I told the support guy, that there is a person (you) who persuasively claims to be close to NEC, and thinks that the humming problem is known, an there is a fix for...
Hello travbomb,
this seems to be good news. I called NEC Europe today, and asked the support guys, if there are any news on the subject. Unfortunately, they told me, that there's nothing new, and that what I have heard must be rumors. So if there is any name, that I can refer to, or any number...
After listening to the noise again from alle sides, I came to the same conclusion. The noise is different from every side and in the area of the power plug it's rather low. BTW, mine is available on ebay now. (no pixel failure and the slight hum).

Well, at least you have been able to get your money back. I tried so, after 3 days, and there was no chance. Today I called NEC support again, to have my monitor picked up, that I got in exchange for the first one. I asked to have it checked, if the noise its making is within NECs...
NEC service really tried to do what they could. Instead of a RMA sticker, I got a new screen today. The noise is indeed more silent, but on the right it can be heard well and has a different pitch now. So when I just was thinking about living with that noise, I dared to lower the brightness...
I'm not sure if that's good news for me. Seems like the noise of your monitor was also acceptable for the tech guys. Well my monitors noise can be heard sitting in front of it, and is more audible behind the screen as well, but it's not acceptable for me, it gives me a headache. I should get a...
so the question is: did you buy your screen in europe?
by the way, the noise is clearly audible, even if you just enter the osm having the PC turned off...

Since I did not get a call from NEC Support on Friday I called again today (Monday) and they told me again, that they never heard about this problem before. At least this time they gave me a RMA number. The problem is, that they would replace the monitor only, if a technician would come to the...
After turning on my LCD2690 today the noise was so annoying, that I recorded it again. I did some noise reduction to emphasise the noise characteristics:
LCD2690_3 (wav 1,7 MB)
LCD2690_Noise reduced (wav 1,7 MB)
LCD2690_3 (mp3 233KB)
LCD2690_Noise reduced (mp3 233KB)
I did a frequency analysis...
Hi travbomb,
Thanks for your help:
1. I tried to locate the buzz and its audible from all sides of the screen. There seems to be a noise maximum about 15 cm above the lower end on the left and right side, as shown here:
http://www.unet.univie.ac.at/~a9300343/lcd2960/lcd2690_noisemax.jpg...
Hi,
thanks a lot for the recording. I've got the same kind of noise and fortunately mine is by far more silent. I just called the German support, who told me that they have never heard of that problem before. So I told them how to find this thread and your post number. They said they would...
Got mine today. Unfortunately it also has this annoying buzzing sound coming from the power supply. Otherwise the screen is great. Is there any chance to get it exchanged to a silent one?
