    42" OLED MASTER THREAD

loopaddiction my build worked out millimeter perfect. Let me explain it and I’ll add the downside on the bottom. I can recommend this setup to anyone skilled enough to know about this forum. Downside: this monitor arm is in the style of the Fully Jarvis, but a heavier build version. My wife...

    42" OLED MASTER THREAD

The best monitor purchase of my last 30 thirty years was the Westinghouse LVM-37W3. In a couple of different roles it gave me over a decade of outstanding service. I can't help but be reminded of it by the C2 42" so far. Similar size, excellent performance, but you have to know a little bit...

    42" OLED MASTER THREAD

I ended up going with the Mountup "up to 33lbs" arm, similar in design to the Jarvis, and got it installed today. It moves in all the positions I want it to. I'll give it a week of testing before I declare it a success. A nice touch of the Mountup is that the gas tension screw has a readout for...

Would you mind sharing why? I’ll have a handle attached to the VESA mount, so I won’t torque the screen directly.

    42" OLED MASTER THREAD

I’m picking up an on sale Best Buy C2 42” today. What’s the current consensus on best monitor arm? 1. Ergotron LX / Amazon Basics 2. Ergotron HX (non-HD) 3. Fully Jarvis / Monoprice I had planned to get an Ergotron HX but am reading that it’s very stiff to adjust. I move my monitor back and...

    Rise of the HiDPI Displays

Lava Lamp Freak really interested in how you will think this compares to the Studio Display. I love the design and speakers on that thing but I knew up front that 27” would be too small for me; so I never bought one. And hey, we’ve got just enough time under Dell’s return policy in case the...

    Rise of the HiDPI Displays

In what I would call a questionable aesthetic choice, Dell likes to put speakers on top of the monitor rather than the sides.

Pretty sure it’s height adjustable. It even pivots, which is important to me.

    Rise of the HiDPI Displays

Dell U3224KB has been launched! MSRP $3,200 but showing as $2,560 after 20% off. Not sure if that’ll just be the real price, a launch special, or a pricing mistake. I ordered one.

    Where are the 8K Monitors?

My prediction: somebody will make an 8K 42” TV that becomes an unintended monitor sensation among enthusiasts first. And then we’ll start seeing companies target the resolution for PC in earnest.

    Rise of the HiDPI Displays

I didn't know that. Really? (Not to be rude). How does it even vary refresh rate across the screen? That's insane!

    Rise of the HiDPI Displays

I think we all want a HiDPI, HFR, HDR monitor. But at most we can get two at the moment, so priorities depend on our use cases. The only HDR computer displays I use so far are a MacBook Pro and my iPhone 12. What surprised me is that they can display HDR and non-HDR content at the same time, as...

    Rise of the HiDPI Displays

That spec sheet has a lot going on I like. Only weirdness is that while it has a mini DP 2.1 port, the TB4 port lists DP 1.4 with DSC. Maybe that only means that it’s backwards compatible with TB3 sources. But it could mean that the TB4 port doesn’t support 10-bit. As always, we’ll have to...

    Rise of the HiDPI Displays

I feel like that one is one refresh away from greatness. Only being able to connect one computer and having to use two DP cables to do it strikes me as the sort of thing that can cause annoying problems. And of course is totally unsuitable if you work on Windows and macOS. But add one or two...

    Rise of the HiDPI Displays

That’s a bummer. Mine being a work computer I do work stuff on it and haven’t noticed. I watched a short HDR clip on it just to see the screen pop and that was cool. 1600 nits peak. When do you notice it? Gaming? Movies?

    Rise of the HiDPI Displays

I use a MacBook Pro at work, which is like a small version of exactly that. Better even, since the Pro Display does its thing with regular LEDs where the MBP uses mini LEDs. Best screen I’ve ever laid eyes on. 32” of that on my desktop would be incredible.

    Rise of the HiDPI Displays

32” is my preferred size too. I would love HFR and HDR. Realistically, I’ll probably pick up the next decent HiDPI 32” display regardless of HFR/HDR. Let’s hope Dell comes through strong. Apple’s Pro Display XDR is nice, but I can’t spend $5K on a 4-year-old display.

    Rise of the HiDPI Displays

HiDPI + HFR (+ HDR) would be glorious. I suspect we’ll have to wait for Apple to show the rest of the industry the way. But in the age of DisplayPort 2.1/USB4, someone else could step up.

    Rise of the HiDPI Displays

It looks like we have a new HiDPI entrant that's available before either Dell or Samsung are shipping: Kuycon G27X. 27" 5K (5120x2880; 218 PPI), 520/590 nits, 8-bit FRC, IPS in a familiar design. $750-850 depending on stand option. Never heard of this Chinese brand but there are online reports...

    Why OLED for PC use?

Windows 2000 was my favorite. Everything was neatly organized and in its place. The whole thing felt like one coherent thought. I'm on Win 10, which feels like two OSs bolted together with an ad service sprinkled on top. Two areas for system settings, lots of redundant controls with crosslinks...

    M2 Pro Mac mini + 8K display

tl;dw of the video: if you run 4K at 150% scaling with HDR, 4:4:4 chroma, and 10 bit color, you'll be limited to 100Hz max refresh. 200% scaling with the same specs lets you go to 120Hz. It is unknown if that's a bug in need of fixing or a permanent limitation. What I'd love to see is a test...

Is it better to connect a monitor via USB, or HDMI?

HDMI has a good chance of not supporting CEC, meaning your monitor won't turn on/off with your computer. DisplayPort is the better connection because it will support all the control functions. Thunderbolt and USB are theoretically the best connection, because inside they run (alt-mode) DP and...

The 32 inch 4k IPS 144hz's...(Update - this party is started) (wait for it...)

Every time I see a bunch of new posts on this thread, I think it’s exciting 32” 4K high refresh IPS news. Gods know, we need them. Instead it’s some stupid OLED argument. There are tradeoffs. We are nerds. We know! Nobody gives a shit.

What new OLED gaming monitors in 2023?

Remember the Westinghouse LVM-37W3 1080p? People were using that thing for 10-15 years. It outlasted my first marriage. The right monitor purchase can leave you set for a long time.

What new OLED gaming monitors in 2023?

I currently run 2560x1440 at 32". 92 PPI. I love the size of everything at 1x scaling on both Windows and macOS. Yes, it's bigger than those OS were designed for (96 and 109 PPI). But I think a little extra size is nice on a bigger monitor. But it is pixely. 92 is definitely not "retina" or...

8K at 42" would be perfect. 210 PPI. But I don't think anyone is doing that yet.

    Rise of the HiDPI Displays

For sure. The whole category has a long way to go. That being said, I think there's a good use case on Windows already. Let's say I'm editing a photo. 12MP is pretty much the minimum size these days, with even smartphone cameras often going to 48MP. I'd rather do that on a 20MP display than a...

    Rise of the HiDPI Displays

It looks like 2023 will be the year HiDPI comes to Windows! I’m excited! It’s taken way too long. As I make this thread, Samsung and Dell have announced HiDPI displays. big jump in price from 4k to 5k. why?

For me the ranking is: ~100 PPI: Windows = macOS ~160 PPI: Windows > macOS ~200 PPI: macOS > Windows
  32. E

big jump in price from 4k to 5k. why?

One more thing: all these scaling issues are the reason that the Surface Studio uses a 28” 4500 x 3000 display. That’s 192 PPI, exactly twice the legacy Windows 96 PPI. Long-term I’m hoping HiDPI displays become available for Windows as well so that we get beyond scaling issues.
  33. E

big jump in price from 4k to 5k. why?

Seeing the 5120x2880 resolution reported for a larger 4K display is exactly key for understanding the macOS approach to HiDPI. Pardon me for starting from basics here. Displaying an OS is different from a movie because the size of text and interface elements matters. Both Windows and macOS were...
  34. E

big jump in price from 4k to 5k. why?

I think it's more nuanced than that. I'm with you that Windows scaling will give you better results in the 130-180 DPI range that is common with larger 4K displays. However, I would argue that macOS gives you better results than Windows when connected to a HiDPI (PPI>200) display. Anandtech did...

    42" OLED MASTER THREAD

Does anybody know if the optional Bravia Cam on the Sony can be plugged into the PC? I plan to arm mount a 42" OLED (Ergotron HX) and the Bravia Cam would be a great webcam installation for staying put. I contacted Sony Support. They got both TV and camera people involved but concluded that...

As it seems there will never be a 16:10 with any gaming options I finally ordered a XG321UG to replace the 30" Dells

I would spend an unreasonable amount of money on a 3840x2400 display. Having lived through 4:3 -> 16:10 -> 16:9, 16:10 was an undeniable sweet spot. Small letterboxing on 16:9 video, yet decent amounts of vertical space.

The 32 inch 4k IPS 144hz's...(Update - this party is started) (wait for it...)

Which, if any, of these monitors have a glass screen? I might be due for an upgrade from my 32"/1440p/144Hz and I'm sick of squishy-to-the-touch, matte displays. I won't deny it, I'm a little jealous of my friends with Apple displays/iMacs. That build quality is nice.

    Apple Studio Display on Windows

This doesn't help me figure out if I can hook up a Apple Studio Display to the USB-C out of my RTX 2070 Amp Extreme (reminder of what I actually need help with), but iFixit has a neat teardown. The internals are something else. Internal power supply in a display.

    Apple Studio Display on Windows

Yeah, a year ago a mirrorless camera plus capture card was where I thought I would end up. Gods everything gets so expensive so quickly. However, I’ve been upgrading slowly so that my purchases don’t run ahead of my experience level. And now I’m at a point where I would rather have the...
