check out some of the synology devices, DS1513+, there are a bunhc of apps that you can download from the appstore to allow the connections to the NAS. for the DS1513+ there are also some expansion units to add additional storage, i believe it maxes at 60TB.
depending on location for the router in your home... think of wireless as a shower head, it's it positioned at a low point in your house you're going to have a lower amount of coverage vs at a higher point in the home.
an access point would help potentially if you were to have it mounted at a...

do they have their own domain? may want to look at google apps for migrating the email accounts to and use active sync for them. i believe its up to 10 users for free on there, used to be 50 i think.
sounds good... basically if you're keeping it simple then you're not going to be dumping a ton of cash into the project and thus most vendors probably won't be throwing in training for their products.
How long has the new guy been with the company? has he gone through the whole process that the...
i would stay far away from acer myself, have had nothing but issues with the brand. Lenovo i've had much better luck with (running an x201 currently and it's taken a few 6ft drops and is working solid still)
to each their own though and it's all personal preference/experience

i'm running some of the Meraki ap's at my office, i used to work through a MSP as well and we were heavy into Cisco and Juniper. I got one of the demo ap's from Meraki and found it could do everything the Cisco/JP's were capable of doing but with a lot more ease of setup.

each firewall will have +'s and -'s depending on what you're looking to accomplish.

- set any other static devices that are needed (NAS, AP, printers, etc)
- enable DHCP
- reboot the devices or release/renew their ip's
keep in mind you may need to set your laptop/desktop to a static ip to apply the changes or to...
your forwarding is still setup through your firewall, if you moved the dhcp over to a server then you have a little more granular control over it. You'd also be better off on the server as you can then get dns running smoother internally.
for the wireless speeds being half of that of the wired speed, correct me if i'm wrong but wireless is half duplex, so you speed is cut for the sending and receiving.
