    Computer in a Monitor?

I pulled a monitor out of IT's trash pile at work the other day. It's a 19" supposedly-flatscreen CRT (obvious curvature of the screen when sitting right next to my 19" LCD monitor), ViewSonic E90fmb. It weighs literally 50 pounds and I think I sprained something carrying it out to the truck...

Poll: Reliability of Various Storage Drives

    1. Yes, most recently a notebook drive that was a bear to replace. (Too many tiny little screws) 2. Never used a USB Pen. 3. Never used an external Hard Drive. 4. Yes, most recently had 3 or 4 out of 100 or so DVD+R end up not readable on the very drive that burned them, though they...

    Post your "Ghetto Mod" pics

Back when I had a 400MHz AMD K6-2 (running at 450, of course), I couldn't keep it cool during the summer so I'd run it without a cover. So I built a cover that went down over the sides and also held my keyboard tray (aka an old removable shelf) a couple of inches above the 120mm AC fan which...

    waiting on the UPS man

Just thought I'd mention that my package did finally arrive, delivered by a stealthy ninja who left it on the doorstep. I almost tripped over it going out the door. I'd spent most of the day camped out not 10 feet from the door. I didn't even hear the truck come pull in. They used to leave...

    Dumpster Diving!

I do most of my DDing at the hospital where I work in security. The official word straight from the heads of both IT&S and Engineering is that anything in the dumpsters is fair game, because only things that are broken are thrown away; everything else is put in storage. Of course, experience...

    waiting on the UPS man

Waiting for my Dragon Naturally Speaking Standard V. 8.0 to arrive. Paid for next day air but every line on the UPS tracking page ends with ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS CAUSED THIS DELAY. Had carpal and cubital tunnel surgery two days ago. If I spend another week typing one-handed, I'll...

Quick question about air flow and ATX cases...

I'd suggest that you try it both ways and check the temps when blowing in bottom out top then blowing in top out bottom. In a couple of cases I had, I got better results by fighting against the natural air currents. And, of course, post pics and list temps!

    Computer euthanasia...

Well, there is the rumor that newer high-speed CD/DVD drives will cause defective media to shatter, throwing shards through the computer and causing massive damage. A few tiny taps with a hammer or a few seconds in a microwave could create a dozen AOL CD fragmentation grenades. Unfortunately...

    Computer euthanasia...

Several years back, our department got a cast-off computer, a 286 or so, from another department. My computer illiterate boss decided to help by putting it together for us. Then he called me and wanted to know why it was hissing and smelled funny every time he tried turning it on. I...
