Yeah, 450 is right, because today the 8800gts totally blew right the fuck up.
After a long time of no weird crashes and video errors, the card finally gave out completely today while watching a starcraft tournament live stream. The monitors blacked out after the entire screen turned to magenta...
Thanks for all the replies ;o I think I figured it out... I rolled back the nvidia drivers to version 197 and all the problems have disappeared. For some reason my 8800GTS does not like any drivers beyond that version, and will freak the fuck out with anything recent. I updated my drivers to...
I recently upped my work station's monitors to 2x 1920 x 1200 displays. One is in portrait for ze codes, and the other is in landscape for ze arts. Since I've made this change, I've been having all sorts of problems with my video card... it seems to be running out of texture memory or...
All I can offer is that I've seen two clicking dead drives get revived from freezing. One was alive for about 20 minutes, and the other lived for about 3 hours before clicking again. If you get it working, you gotta work fast.
Hmm I'm trying to boot into a liveCD of Knoppix but it's getting hung up on "Starting ADRIANE screenreader..." with no progress past that point.
The BIOS can't even see the hard drive so I'm guessing the whole thing is done.
I've heard that WD's RMA system is pretty awesome, but does...
This morning I had a USB card reader that wasn't working on an OSX laptop, so I plugged it into my PC. My PC then went bonkers and everything slowed down to a crawl, so I unplugged the card reader, and the lag didn't let up. I then unplugged everything from the back, including a eSATA hard...
There's a fair number of people having ram detection issues across all x58 platforms...

I just made this jump almost exactly the way you have planned, trisscross. I went from getting 50-70fps on medium settings in L4D2 (q6600 at 3.2ghz 8800gts), to 200fps on maxed out settings. Starcraft 2 also runs at a solid 120fps with Ultra settings. The differences are I have a 5870...
Just updated the BIOS today. And yeah, I think it was setting those timings because it wasnt running at 1600mhz by default.
The problem only appears on a cold boot so I won't know for sure if the problem still happens with the new bios until tomorrow.
I haven't reseated anything yet, but here's something weird... All 6 gigs are being recognized today. When I look at the dram timing control though, it reads 7-7-7-20 in the "1st Information" which isn't at all correct for my ram.
Since the MX518 came out I have sworn by it. I've tried new mice by logitech and razer over the years but every time I just end up going back to the mx518. I get kicked from servers in every FPS I have played for having an "aimbot" : )
I disabled XMP and went to manual, still showing 4gb.
AthlonX2: Were you showing 4gb in windows, and the BIOS, with 6gb in CPU-Z? Also, I ran a memtest last night and memtest detected all 6 gigs and it ran 10 passes with 0 errors. Guess I'll have to reseat the CPU.
Right, hm... of course I don't hear about this issue until after I assemble the system ;p It's also worth noting that I'm using a Thermalright Cogage True Spirit cooler, but I don't think that the back plate is making contact with the board. I can try adjusting the screws on the mount, as I...
SPECS:
I have 6gb of memory in the board, but at first only 2gb was showing up in Windows 7. So I turn on X.M.P. according to g.skill's advice, and now 4gb show up. The strange thing is that all 6 gigs of ram show up according to CPU-Z. Has anyone here experienced this problem, and if so...
Is there such a case with all of that these days? I've been doing a lot of searching but it seems that over the past year or so all cases have giant fans for side panels with mesh sides and tiny windows. I currently own a Thermaltake Armor but I really really want a side mounting hard drive...
Thanks for the heads up on the RAM, swapped that out on my wishlist.
Will that HSF cause any overlapping issues with the mobo? Like overlapping a ram slot and such.
And now a reading from the list of questions provided in the sticky.
I'm sitting on a 5870, a power supply, new hard drive, and dvd drive that originally I was going to put into my current PC -- but recently some events have transpired that have allowed me to afford a completely new build. As...
Wow, good call. I've experienced some flickering in the SC2 beta, and I think they started after I updated drivers. I always assumed that newer drivers were better, but I guess not for older cards.
Hopefully last update:
Left 4 Dead 2 has run continuously for about 14 hours without crashing, with 6 month old drivers + CPU overclocked to 3.2ghz. Looks like it was a driver issue. Although this problem gave me a great excuse to clean out my case, test all of my hardware, and overclock my...
Interesting results with turning back to a 6 month old driver. So far Left 4 Dead 2 has been running for about 5 hours with no crashes. Will leave it on when I go to sleep and check it when I wake up to see what the result is.
I was having problems before I updated my drivers. Updated the drivers, still crash. I'll try a driver version from a couple months back.
Running older drivers now, just leaving the game running to see if it crashes or not.
Sure is starting to look that way.
Memtest ran for 15 hours with 0 errors. Prime95 has run for 8 hours with no errors. I went back to stock settings, uninstalled and cleaned off drivers, reinstalled the latest drivers, and updated the BIOS to the latest revision and it still crashes after a...
So far I've run a memtest for 3 passes without any errors - 2 hours and 30 minutes in. Will let it run for a few more hours.
Also, out of curiosity I booted up the original left 4 dead and left it running when I went to sleep last night, and when I woke up the same crash had occurred that...
Of course I spoke too soon After my crash free play session of a few hours, I went back for more, but apparently this was too much to ask.
The crash this time was different though. The initial crashes were complete lock ups, followed by the monitors losing signal after 5 or 6 seconds. This...
After a play session tonight with no crashes, I might have fixed it.
I downloaded evga precision and cranked my fan speed speed to 100% before I launched the game. The temp on the card must've dropped by 20C idle almost instantly. Looks like it might have been an overheating issue!
So after 3 days newegg was still processing, so I said fuck it, canceled that order and bought the combo XFX deal.
PS newegg sure is taking a long time to process my orders. I used to click the submit button and the next day my stuff would somehow already be here.
situation update
I don't think it's heat related. I just had another crash, and this time I was monitoring the temps. The GPU was only at 75 when everything locked up.
I have no clue what is going on. My last guess is that my power supply is not keeping up, but this is pretty much the only...
Whoa okay, so I am not familiar with this baking the card thing. Is this a real solution to video card issues?
Edit: Haha I guess it is, interesting.
A lot of people have been saying that I should be able to run L4D2 at max settings with a solid framerate without any problems with my current...
Card is at stock, and I have never attempted to OC it. Thanks though!
Also, now monitoring the temps with Everest and at idle the GPU is at 72, and the GPU Diode is at 79.
Pretty straight forward issue. In L4D2 after a campaign or two, the game locks up with a looping sound effect playing. After about 10 seconds, both my monitors turn off as if they're getting no signal. This has also happened with Starcraft 2 beta on one occasion, but it's definitely more...
I didn't want to just quote your post of links since it was right above, but I also wanted to acknowledge that I was speaking to your post, so I just replaced it with awesome, as it was awesome.
