haha I wondered how long it would take the fearless leader to look at my IP :D
the hypocricy of Moose is obvious, some choose not to see it, others go along with it. That's fine, I'm just glad I left KodiakStar in the dust earlier today at the 137th spot
for the love of god, grow some...
I don't know, I didn't sit there with a lighter or anything, stuff just happens. Most often it's a power supply that shorts out (granted a cheap as hell power supply to begin with). It was pretty neat though, good 10" flames shooting out of the still running power supply & fan just helping the...
well everytime some prick cuts me off on the highway I do wish I could rip him out of there GTA3-style and beat him senseless with a shovel/baseball bat/cane
video games are evil and I have my own elevator right to hell.
your simple question sure seemed like a flame bait buddy, I don't have a problem at all but I would suggest you look into a mirror when you ponder about that.
To answer your question, I'm the only IT person for a corporation with about 120 networked clients spread over 3 locations in MA, 1 in...
I guess the much higher chance of having your house burn down does not matter any to you. I hate to be the negative one here, I've also had an ancient rig go up in flames, it happens. I would hope you would agree with me that a small brand new NAS has a much better chance of being reliable than...
I thought off-topic posts weren't allowed

for the $100 that it will cost (as lets say opposed to $0 spent on a system from your attic), I think a LOT of people would choose the more expensive solution. Run them for a year or two and your electric bill alone will make up most of the initial purchasing difference.
Using your logc then Boeing 747 is just a glorified Cessna.
Your statement makes no sense, I did not say it's not close to the truth, but often the most subtle differences between two things can mean a lot. I Listed a few somewhere above, build me a PC based NAS that takes up the room of a...
it's a waste of your time, I hate to break it to you, but that's the truth.
especially as a starting band, you should be glad if people rip your stuff ! :D :p
did you try \\192.168..... instead of \\desk ???
double and tripple check the permissions on the shared folder on your DESK system, ensure both the sharing & security tabs have "everyone" Listed with full read/write permissions
start with basics, from each machine try to ping the other...
your linksys router can hand out DHCP, if you don't want that, then I'd recommend a 2003 server just for fun, there are linux solutions of course but IMHO it's the best to learn on microsoft platform whether you like it or not, that's just how the world is right now.
You don't need 2 NIC...
they don't look as impressive , more racks the better! better yet, dump the racks and get 50 towers in there, preferably on some shady yardsale tables, boxes, wooden crates and whatever other things you can set them onto. That's my kind of data center.
end-users should FEAR DEATH from...
Yes they can identify where you are unless they are retarded
lets see... they definitely have a layout of where each walljack is which is identified on their patch panels which leads to a switch that records a MAC address (minimum) so if they see something shady going on with your IP they...
always consider cooling, I don't know what the room is like or what you have in place for that, but give that some good thought. Look at the APC line , if your room allows it you could put get 6 racks total, two rows of 3 and put a walkway/hot isle between them, sealed and that would easily let...
no one is bashing anything, no need to get all offended, but a cheap, slow, loud, big and unreliable system dug up from the attic should never be considered a good NAS solution (no matter how little you want to spend). That's just the reality of it.
As a matter of fact that is a recipe for...
and take up tons of room, create unnecessary heat, waste power not to mention have this fugly thing sitting in your room... as opposed to having a little NAS device stashed on the shelf that you never worry about once it's setup and running as you want it.
Is your solution cheaper? sure...
any enterprise-wide downtime is an absolute disaster. Problem is that some people may say "hey it's only 2 days! who cares, you'll be back up and running before you know it", but that's only because it's often impossible to put a dollar value on the downtime.
Sales aren't getting their work...
Linksys NSLU2 can be purchased for about $100 on ebay, it uses EXTERNAL hard drives, but the idea behind it is the same. Great little unit for the money.
That's about the best choice you can make. I don't want to get into a NOD32 vs. Symantec war, but I'd go with Corporate + mailsecurity (not the appliance, but the software itself).
my setup supports over 110 users just great
Good brain that can handle logic processing ;)
seriously though, for such small networks you don't need much other than cable tracing tool, some cat5 testing tools (lanshack.com has some good ones).
Rest of it is really just logic, you can get far with that and ping :D
One more...
Warcraft 3 video animations , being an old timer I'm more for content than flashy crap, but the animations in W3 were absolutely amazing. They made me want to play each mission and finish ASAP so I could see some more of them.
Civilization 1 : building up the palace to what you wanted it to be, I know it's not a huge part of the game, kind of useless too, but at the time the ability to do that and its graphics were amazing
Ultima Underworld 2 : amazing RPG for its time, that's when I realized that video games have...
I'd need more info to diagnose it further, but the simplest thing you can do is use static IP's instead of bothering with DHCP with such a simple setup.
I almost have a feeling that they are static right about now, but both set to the same IP or your DHCP router pool only allows 1 IP but...
Not that many DSL or Cable providers are able to match 1.5Mbits upload speed of a T1, that's why they are so expensive and still very widely used.
DSL is mostly marketed for home users and small companies, T1's are in a whole another league as not that many people are willing to shell out...
Few good old ones that I've come accross
1) user arguying that their floppy cannot be accessed, it says "disk not formatted", I go up and sure enough there is NO floppy in there... this turns into a 5 minute discussion where the user REFUSES To look in the drive , me sticking my finger in the...
They are honest about it, you just don't want to see it that way.
Aiding and Abetting/Accessory was a crime last I checked, but maybe that has changed  will anyone ever sue owners of this site or people giving advice? probably not, you're right, but if it was me I'd protect my...
right, because someone who hires a consultant really gives a flying F about that said consultant communicating to other prospective employers, lmao. Nice story you got there.
Shouldn't have bought that cheap-ass axim POS PDA, get a PDA/Phone and your problems would be solved like I suggested...
no it's not beside the point, you shouldn't be checking prospective employers from work anyway
Communicate your feelings to your boss ASAP!! he'll really appreciate your honesty
