I've taken many desktops apart, but this looks like a job for someone else. What a pain. Best plan will be to get it with the right memory pre-installed. Thanks for the tips...
So I'm pricing around for the Mini I'm looking to buy. At Macmall the upgrade from 512 to 1G is a whopping $200, which includes *professional installation* whatever that is, and the caveat:"Memory is not user-installable". Can that be true? That can't be true. Can someone please clarify? Thanks...
In an attempt to get this old G4 (667) running before I opt for a Mini, or toss it out the window...
I pulled this old Mac out last week, hoping to get it running to be able to open some Digital Peformer files. Hooked it up to 4 different monitors with the same results: turn it on, get the...
Only DP 5.1, program and plugins, are compiled for the Intel processors, so unless I upgraded from 4.6, I'd be running in emulation. Probably not the best idea, but then I don't really know what the performance hit is.
I usually do music projects in Cubase on my PC. I have a large project that's being recorded with Digital Performer (MOTU-Mac only). I've been recording my tracks on the PC to a submix and then sending individual tracks to the producer for inclusion into the DP files.
Thinking it'd be easier...
You do see the occasional used, but on warranty T60 on Ebay for a decent price:

XGA, unfortunately....
I looked at the Lenovo N100, but it was replaced by the N200 series:

I wound up buying a T43 TP, but the Lenovos got decent enough reviews.
I was interested in the HPs until I found a few at BB that had the same mushy keyboard in the upper left. Don't think they are all like that, but compared to the keyboard on the T43Thinkpad I wound up with there's no comparison.
OTOH I recently rehabbed a colleague's son's Turion HP 17"...
I bought a new T43 with 3-yr warranty offa Ebay last month for $650, but I lucked into that. Got a friend a T42 in excellent shape with 1G last week for $685 with a bit of warranty left. I've seen some T42's for around $400. That range seems to get you fair condition; small cracks, maybe a ding...
Just took delivery of an Ebay T42. Runs great, except they failed to upgrade the HD to the promised 60G 7200rpm. They're sending me another 512mb of RAM instead, which is fair enough I suppose. Unfortunately, like the T43 I got my wife for xmas, this machine is for a friend as well, so after I...
As one of the 4 people in this country who doesn't have a cell phone, I'm considering getting an iPhone for no other reason than to show it off prominently in crowds. I don't really have anyone to call, but I could pretend that I'm dealing with some really important communication (you know, like...
Some people will tell you that Thinkpads are just the best. Others may say they are overpriced and have gone downhill since being sold to the Chinese. The ones I've bought (including my son's Z61m) run great and the support has been very good. As far as screens go, the XGA (1024x768) models...
The T60/Z60/Z61 series are the latest. The T43's are about 18 months old or so and the T42's are a bit older than that. I suppose they're still overpriced relative to the bargain basement offerings out there, but then they are Thinkpads, which may or may not be that compelling, depending on your...
There are a lot of Thinkpad T42's and T43's that are being dumped on the market recently in that range. I bought my wife a T43 for Xmas. 512 / 60G / P4M2.0 / XGA for $650 delivered offa Ebay. Came NIB, to my surprise with a warranty thru 7/09. Got a T42 for a friend, SXGA+ for $685 last week...
There are a lot of Thinkpads T4x's being discounted these days. I picked up a new T43 w/3yr warranty offa Ebay for $650 (great machine, except for XGA); and just got a friend an SXVGA T42 w/ 1G and 60G 7200rmp HD for $685. Lot of corporate machines and dealer returns being liquidated.
It also has 1 meg of L2 cache, so 2.7 would be fine for a comfortable, stable O/C. I still have a coupla 939 boards to use for upgrades, so if the 4000+ stays cheap, it'll be a nice choice even if it isn't a monster overclocker.
I took advantage of having to replace a bum 3800+ to get a 4000+ from the Egg for $79 delivered. Feels really good so far. Also got to use the XP-90 that's been lying around. Very nice with the 2x120mm fans in the Rosewill case.
This isn't for me, so I'll take it to a mild O/C. How well do...
My wife's new Thinkpad has an XGA. My son's Z61m is WSXGA. Many people dislike XGA as being low lez and perhaps a bit clunky. It's true that the Z61 display fits a lot more on the screen. OTOH, for general applications and readability the XGA display isn't really that bad. It depends a lot on...
I'll hope for the best with the powered hub. I can't find any info on the power draw of the Artec. I have a powered HP scanner that I can give her if it comes to that.
A colleague needs a scanner for her Dell laptop, so I picked her up a used Artec 1236 USB scanner that draws it's power from the USB port. When we try to use it we get a "Power exceeeds the port's capacity..." type of error. Apparently it's drawing too much juice. I ordered a powered USB hub...
Yeah the T43 I lucked into last week is a mighty fine work machine. After trying out all the shiny, flexy, heavy alternatives at Best Buy, the Thinkpads just feel so solid. Since I don't game, and am in no hurry to run Aero, its deficiencies in the multi-media areas mean little to me. With the...
That's what's funny. Neither of these worked from the gitgo. Brand new OEMs from a (supposedly) reputable Ebay seller. I tried the first one on 4 different boards, before it occurred to me that it was the CPU, not the mobo/mem/PSU that was bad. Returned the CPU and got a new one in November...
Got a 3700+ or 3800+ pull you might sell cheap? I need to replace a bad 3800+. This was a replacement for another DOA one that I just got around to trying out today, and it's bad too...grrrr. It's OEM and past the dealer warranty, so I need to replace it as cheaply as possible. The Egg has open...
Well that was easy. The XP-90 went in without a hitch... once I figured out the instructions. Now if only this old Epox NF3 board would POST... but that's another problem...
The funny thing is this will be a slightly overclocked workstation with 2 120mm fans and the xp-90. That's more cooling than I ever put on my own machines which run on the edge, but these are the parts I have on hand. I'll try to be careful...
I find the amd heatpipes to be pretty good for...
I'm putting together a new 3800+ build. Mounted the motherboard and realized i didn't have a spare AMD hsf. I do have an unused XP-90 that I bought a few months back before I discovered that I liked the AMD heatpipe better. I've never mounted an XP-90 before. It looks like it takes a fair amount...
Ummm... since when is Newegg not reliable? Usually, if they say they have it (which they do), they do. Having made hundreds of orders from them over the years, I'd say they still are as good as anyone. Not always the best price, but with cheap 3-day shipping to your door they're still a great...
