have you tried using that wireless card in another computer....are the walls in his hous simple dry wall...or concrete or anything thick? make sure drivers are fully updated and your using the latest. fully uninstall all drivers software and the card reboot... install the latest...

how much do you game....i really don't see a router making that much of an improvment to your connection for a better ping etc.... most settings for games can help reduce lag and such by properly setting up all settings through your command line such as rate cl_rate etc look up...
