You lost: Microsoft is NOT walking back Windows 11’s AI overload — scaling up Copilot and NOT rethinking Recall, business as usual

Going Linux on NVIDA means 5-50% lesser gaming performance, so keep dreaming.

I still blame this on Intel and Nvidia. You're right but it isn't really Linux's fault when Nvidia and Intel can't make drivers as good as AMD. To be fair, AMD had a lot of help from Valve. I understand that Intel is going through a rough patch right now, but Nvidia has like all the money. Nvidia GPU's should be as good on Linux as it is on Windows.

If I polled my family members right now about having to install another operating system besides Windows they would answer "I guess I'd buy a Mac?". I guarantee you none of them even have a clue that Linux even exists. I suspect most people don't even know what the heck Linux even is as most people don't give a shit about how computers work. If you told them Android is built on Linux they'd just get confused. Most people just want to buy something, turn it on, and use it. They're not installing custom operating systems, period. They're not hunting for alternate programs that run on Linux. My father uses LibreOffice on his windows laptop because I installed it for him. He still doesn't know what it is called because he just clicks on the icon and uses the spreadsheet.

Linux is never going to make much of a splash outside the folks like us because it doesn't have a big advertising department showing Superbowl ads and partnerships with Samsung, Lenovo, and others to sell Linux devices in Best Buy. Most people are walking into a store and seeing Windows, MacOS, Chrome books, and Android/iOS devices and buying something. That's it. Linux's market share fluctuates based on the size of our percentage of the population. Heck, I've been on this forum for decades and I only installed Linux on one machine last year. If it took someone like me this long to make the leap how long do you think it'll take someone who isn't interested in how things actually work?

“Microsoft Scales Back Copilot Integration in Windows 11, Removes Eight File Explorer Actions

by AleksandarK Today, 06:05 Discuss (0 Comments)
Microsoft is officially cutting back on forced AI adoption that has been troubling Windows 11 users by working to simplify AI use across its operating system. According to a report by Windows Latest, Microsoft is removing Copilot actions related to OneDrive in File Explorer. This means that a simple right-click to open the context menu and then selecting the OneDrive icon will no longer present a long list of tasks that Microsoft's Copilot LLM would perform on the file. These tasks included summarizing, comparing, and asking questions, which provided minimal value on their own. Instead, Copilot features like these can be accessed through "Ask Copilot" or other less intrusive methods. This change is part of a OneDrive update aimed at reducing eight AI actions and keeping them available for those who wish to use them. Image below is a courtesy of Windows Latest, which shows how these actions look like.
MicrosoftAs part of this change, we're retiring the OneDrive Copilot Summarize, Create FAQ, Compare Files, Ask a question, Explain image, Explain images, Compare images, Extract text actions from the File Explorer context menu... Users can still access Copilot features via right-click "Ask Copilot," the File Explorer Home icon, or the OneDrive activity center.“

Depends on what you want to do with it. My son’s using my old 1070Ti. Runs great for what he does at 1440p. Also, the reason AMD is so far ahead is because companies like Valve were using their APUs so they needed to make sure they could squeeze enough performance out of it. There are people now taking the time to better optimize Nvidia’s hardware for Linux as well, so it’s only a matter of time before this issue abates for more demanding requirements.

I joked with my fellow 90s tech buddies my son will be the Linux guy at his highschool since that’s what I’ve started him on.

In any case, I’m extremely satisfied with it from my experience. Windows 11 is still on my daily driver because I need it for multiplayer gaming, but as someone who started out with DOS and Windows 3.1 (technically an Apple IIGS, but I’m speaking strictly from an MS standpoint), I have to say it peaked with Windows 7 and has been in decline ever since. For a pure gaming PC, incompatibility issues notwithstanding, SteamOS and Bazzite provide me with a much smoother experience by and large. Less bloat, less BS. Your experience may be different than mine, and that’s fine, that’s why there’s a market and we can choose what we want to use. I will say though, Windows 11 is markedly worse than most previous releases of Windows I’ve used in terms of being a bloated mess, and frankly I resent Microsoft for pushing adware and spyware as integrated “features” of an OS I already paid for. We used to use antivirus software to block what Microsoft now labels as “Windows features”.

Same, and completely agree.

And yet.... everyone of them is using Linux probably 8 or 9x as much as windows right now. Android is a distro. Not a super open one but regardless its still Linux.
The issue with regular people isn't operating systems its consumer products.
How many of your relatives have ever installed windows? I would assume like 99% of other consumers in the world when their machines get slow as heck cause MS has no incentive to make their OS not shit itself up over time. They just go buy another one.
Same reason that when gamers buy a steam deck, their first reaction isn't how do I get windows on this. I remember when Valve launched the deck and all anyone wanted to know was how they would get windows windows on it, you know the real thing. Basically no one did that. They learned how to use use the OS it shipped with instead. Even if it wasn't superior at launch.

I must be getting old because I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone wants any of this in their OS, Win linux macos whatever. I just want my OS to boot, be fast, and run the programs I install. If I want an AI powered thing, then I'll install those AI things. A coworker was praising Omarchy last week and I'm like "why on earth do you want AI tools mucking with your OS and DE in a root like (maybe really root) fashion?" It's no different than bloat - I don't want candy crush or whatever stupid game you're pushing from your store installed on my pc.

I think most people want that stuff, but to me it blows my mind and is everything an OS ISN'T supposed to be.

I'll give you a real world example.
https://github.com/storytold/photocraft

Lets take photocraft as an example of why agentic Linux actually excites some people. (I agree I don't want any BS cloud AI crap on my local PC)
Photocraft has got a lot of news and hype cause its a reverse engineered "photoshop clone".
What people have generally completely missed is that it is plumbed 100% to have every single feature used by AI. (running the human interface or not) LOCAL AI. Not the kinds the corps want you using. Your own local AI. (MS copilot is not really local)

So lets say you have 1,000 photos you want to edit. Sure in the past we had batch process scripts and stuff to apply basic filters, or auto balance levels on a ton of files. BUT what if you could instead say to your local AI. Go through this folder of raw files, color balance the lot, mask ALL the subjects and save that on a new layer, tag the meta data to each file for what the subject of the photos are. Oh and while your add it why don't you sort the output for me create folders for X Y and Z subject and just put those files in there for me please.

Now when the AI has done that for you. Maybe you prompt it to make you a few promotional PDFs for the business the photos were for. OR maybe that 1,000 files had 500 personal photos and 500 photos of your buisness. So you say create me that promotional material, but you know what use the masks to remove all people from any photos you use. When its done... if you want it to go and edit things, change things... whatever you want you just prompt it and watch it click around photocraft for you. You can grab a slider and make adjustments, or just re prompt.

You can do all of that with a couple prompts, cause the AI is capable of just using a CLI version of photoshop with zero restrictions. No generation of content. Automated editing, sorting.

Having the AI tweak your own user UI. I mean again if your into nerdy Linux type things. It is actually pretty cool to say to your OS, I don't like the way my program launch bar works... make me a new one that does what i want.

I started on MS-DOS 5.0, and I agree with that. And yet Windows 11 is still more convenient than Linux. And it's not like I'm some linux noob. Worked on a Norwegian government project where every tool was linux based, that's when I had to dig into linux for real. You think nvidia drivers are bad now? Try installing them on RHEL in 2006. The only Linux distro I ever liked working with was CentOS, without a gui, it served a purpose. It was my goto every time work needed a new server for some gonk idea. It is only my luck that it got discontinued. It is inevitable when a corporation gets its hands on something free and good. I envision the same happening to huggingface under nvidia.

I wondered how long it would be before erma gerd! You losing performance with Nvidia in Linux's......

Someone's Momma shoulda swallowed.......

Linux's decentralized open-source nature is both it's biggest asset and its biggest weakness for various reasons. Windows will continue to dominate the corporate landscape because it's "one ass to kick" for corporate managers and many people are trained to use it, but MS is doing a lot of things to do it that I, as a private user, are increasingly interested in distancing myself from. It's become functionally malware now in so many ways, and the bloat is unreal. From a gaming standpoint, the fact that SteamOS can run games through a compatibility layer and achieve SUPERIOR performance in some cases is evidence of how much of a bloated mess it has become, and I think that's a big reason why you're seeing a progressive shift to Linux within the gaming and home user community. Valve demonstrated that a Linux experience could be very intuitive and positive even for a novice user. Growing up, Linux was always the "geek's" operating system for highly-educated consumers who liked to dive into the nuts and bolts of the PC. That's no longer the case now with various distros. If you just want something simply to plug and play with you can't break, I'd argue that my experience with Bazzite has actually been superior to my experience with Windows 11 in many respects.

I agree about Windows 7. On crying shame is Win 10 LTSB 1507 felt damned good. Lightweight and you could actually turn of the telemetry with user controls. It was sandbagged by lack of Pascal support. Also programmed by real programmers with no vibe coding crap and much less UI crapification.

I don't think anybody involved with Microslop UI development actually uses a computer.

Local agents that I can choose and trust is what would get me to finally delete Windows. I’ve tried switching to Linux many times over the last 25 years, and I always hit a snag in the first week that was so confusing and frustrating that I gave up. If I could tell a powerful LLM to figure out why I can’t see the other devices on my network, or to fix some mysterious error with Proton on a certain Windows game, I’d convert and never look back. I recently tried Qwen 3.8 with Open WebUI on Bazzite, and it came very close to being able to solve the friction, but it wasn’t quite there yet. At the speed these things are improving lately, though, I think I’ll try again in another couple of months instead of the usual 3 to 5 years.

That is the promise of a distro like Omarchy. I can't say its bullet proof at this point. Development on it and others is moving pretty fast.
