I have been running an X570, 5900x, 64gig mem, 12 gig 4070, Main NVME 2 gig, gen 4 for years. I want to move up to AMD 5 but a very limited budget considering new mem, new CPU. What mb should I look for USED, and what CPU to go with? Is the price of even USED mem going to cripple my ability to upgrade to something that would make a significant difference to what I use now? Main use is daily routine and older AAA gaming titles.

You probably already know it, but it is worth pointing out anyway:
Am5 went to LGA. If buying used, you want certainty that the pins are in and arrive in good shape.

On the other side, if you want it cheap, have steady hands, and a brave soul, you can probably land one with bent pins for next to nothing.

Shaky here, I am going to pass on bent pins unless it is from the H and really affordable. Thanks

Probably not what you want to hear, but something like a 9800X3D will be near $400, and even used 2x8GB DDR5 might be around $220. 2x16GB will be around $350.

As far as motherboards, they all perform well. Just maybe stay away from ASrock motherboards with X3D CPU's. Otherwise, get the cheapest with features you like.

I just purchased the MSI MAG B850 Tomahawk Max WiFi used on e-Bay for half of the new selling price.
They're a few still on the site.
I flashed the BIOS to the latest E7E62AMSI.2A64 (dated 09/02/2026) and dropped in a R7 7800x3D
It is a very nice, stable board and runs super cool and smooth.
Motherboard prices have gone through the roof recently....even AM4 boards.

MSI PRO X670-P wifi. Not as feature rich as some boards but it's a solid well built trouble free board that isn't a finicky bitch with memory. Built with two of these and had 0 issues with either. No complaints from the owners one of which is my wife the other is a family friend. Solid performance and reliability for nearly 3 years. Saabjock suggestion of pairing it with a 7800X3D is perfect as a used one will just work in that board and 7800X3D doesn't support OCing. Board also supports bios flashback.
