Vodafone and Huawei made the world’s first 5G call from a computer in Barcelona, Spain this week, demonstrating potential speeds of over 2 gigabits per second. The test utilized the latest standard, 3GPP-approved Non-Standalone (NSA) 5G New Radio, which Vodafone claims rival telecoms’ systems do not meet.

The introduction of 5G, experts say, will bolster the scope of wireless connectivity. “The main evolution compared with today’s 4G and 4.5G (LTE advanced) is that beyond data speed improvements, new [internet of things] and critical communication use cases will require new types of improved performance,” security firm Gemalto explained in a blog post.

All for only $89.99 for the first 6 months at 2GB per month. That's just the data, too!

how would a call use 2gigabits per second?

even if it was a video call... netflix uses less for 4k streaming.

Doesn't the 'G' stand for generation, and doesn't necessarily mean an industry standard regarding speed?

China's Huawei Technologies (HWT.UL) said on Monday it had agreed a broad multi-year patent licence deal with Qualcomm (QCOM.O), opens new tab covering ‌artificial intelligence, 5G, computing and networking technologies.

  • The agreement includes Qualcomm's purchase of certain Huawei US patents related to computing, AI and networking, Huawei said in a statement.
  • It is Huawei's first patent licensing deal with Qualcomm that covers 5G technologies.
  • Huawei said the deal is expected to push the total value of its patent licensing agreements to more than $6.9 billion once completed.
  • The company said its intellectual property licensing business has generated ‌positive revenue since 2021, reflecting years of heavy investment in research and development.
  • Huawei ramped up R&D spending in recent years, as US trade restrictions since 2019 have limited its ability to buy advanced chips and crucial software.
  • Huawei made its first licensing payment to Qualcomm in 2001, while it received its first licensing income in 2011 from Motorola.
  • The Qualcomm agreement follows a licensing deal with HP Inc (HPQ.N), opens new tab announced by Huawei in August.

Qualcomm Licenses Huawei's LogicFolding, 5G, and Other Technologies

Qualcomm announced today that it is officially licensing technology from Chinese technology giant Huawei. In a deal estimated to be worth $6.9 billion upon completion, Qualcomm will license various technologies from Huawei to integrate across its product portfolio.

This agreement will be completed after regulatory approvals are secured.

Qualcomm issued a statement that dismantles rumors that the company is licensing LogicFolding technology.
QualcommQualcomm and Huawei entered into a multi-year, broad patent license agreement that includes cross-licenses across a range of technology fields. The terms are confidential, but reports characterizing Qualcomm as a net payor on the license agreement are incorrect. In addition, assertions that the agreement is related to LogicFold are not accurate. Separately, Qualcomm has agreed to purchase certain Huawei non-cellular U.S. patents across multiple technology areas.

Licensing tech from China? Why not just use it and have our various governments ignore the lawsuits?

No clue. Pretty stupid. Calls sound just fine uncompressed at 64kbps. Compression makes it sound fine at like 20kbps.

Probably so that it can upload the uncompressed .wav to 10 different 'data centers'.

They may have waited too long (first post in this thread is from 2018). Satphone might now become a major competitor to cellphone.

I don't need 2gb/s on my mobile device. But I do need it to work anywhere.

This should probably be its own post, instead of necroing an 8 year old post

You have to admit that a thread necro like this is a great way to demonstrate the superiority of forums of the eternal amnesia of modern social media.
Definitely had me thinking, wait this is new? We've had 5g for how many years? Also shows what parts of posts are important for people... apparently dates are not one of them.
