It’s been a long long time since I’ve posted here. But, my son is looking to switch to PC. I haven’t kept up with anything since 2012, lol.

I’ve been looking at rebuilds but I figured I would check here first. Thanks.

Difficult to ship....Yes. Expensive, really depends. I ship fully built desktops that weigh 40 pounds for roughly 80 shipped with insurance and signature. You just got to avoid shipping direct first party, otherwise it will cost like $150-200.....Moral of the story, pirateship is your friend =P.

I figure he just wants it for gaming? And at what resolution? Unfortunately, $1200 doesn't get you much these days. The cheapest RX 9070 16GB is around ~$663 alone on eBay after shipping and taxes. You don't need that if he's just gaming at 1080P, but it's about the bare minimum for 4K 60FPS depending on the game.

Pirate ship for sure. I do quite a bit of shipping for my side gig (golf club building and repair). Always use pirate ship. Just have to watch when UPS decides to upcharge because one of their machines incorrectly reads a size or weight. Easy to dispute though.

Honestly 1080 to 1440 as a starter. We’ve been an Xbox family for a long time. And I haven’t looked much at pc parts since he was born in 2012. Hell I don’t even know the last time I was on a pc.

Might want to give CachyOS a spin in that case...

In any case you picked one Hell of a time to get back in these waters. Honestly your best option is building with parts from the sale and trade section here but that will require some time, work, reading, and luck, still. But you won't be out a kidney for it.

I would love to have him build it much like I did on my first Pentium 133. Didn’t want to go prebuilt. Maybe something good will pop up here.

That makes things easier. I was the same way, I didn't upgrade from my 3930K's until almost mid 2024. Since then, I've been catching up with just about everything I missed.

If you can't find a good deal on here, the best bet is getting a good mini-PC that has a dedicated OCuLink port and setting up an eGPU with it. You can read the details here. You can play a decent amount of games on the iGPU (780m) alone, and only lose about 2.38% performance over a PCIe 4.0x8 slot if you decide to use a discrete graphics card. Something like a Ryzen 7 8745H or H 255 in a mini-PC performs just about the same as a good overclocked i5-13600K that uses DDR4 memory.

Honestly. Your best bet is to either head over to Microcenter, or see if someone here could pick something up for you to ship. Honestly if I was you...I'd pick up either of these.

Any of them will have you future proofed. Then source a NVME ssd second hand to keep the cost down (1tb drive). Pick up a cheap case, PSU (new or second hand), and gpu def grab second hand...Something along the lines of a 9060XT or 9070GRE on hardwareswap....That will keep you closest to the budget, while getting a decently powerful gaming machine that can be upgraded and isn't EOL. You'd be on AM5, and have the option to drop in a zen 6 or 7 cpu if you ever plan to.....But that's what I'd do...Plenty of alternative options, but this imo is the smartest move.

Costco has $1000 gaming pc

Best deal outthere

That’s what started me looking. It was $1000 last month. $1100 now. Which is within budget. Didn’t know if there were better options elsewhere. Cyberpower was getting some hate. Didn’t know if it was earned or not. But, Costco return policy and support if purchased with their CC which I have, may add extra warranty as well.

Wait till BF, all the big retailers will have some 'deals', if you see a 5070/60 ti 16 gb with 32 GB DDR5 RAM and 1 TB SSD for 1200 or under, pounce on it.

I think I might have something freed up if you're still looking. It was my daughter's older PC (minus the graphics card and 512GB NVMe SSD). I'd be putting new-ish ones in.

ASRock Z760M-HDV/M.2 D4 with an i7-14700T and Jonsbo CR-1400 EVO (Black). I was going to use the 14700T for something else, but it's fine.
Lian Li A3 mATX case.
Seasonic Platinum SS-660XP Active PFC F3 Power Supply. The i7-14700T gets up to 142.8W's, and the RX 9070 16GB gets up to 244W's, so there's still a lot of headroom.
2x8GB 3200MHz DDR4.
512GB NVMe SSD (TLC). Windows 10 Pro, Windows 11 Pro, or a Linux distro.
AMD RX 9070 16GB.
