Playstation single player games will no longer be ported to PC

Sure there's shit in ever generation. But now there's so much it's undeniably hurting them (AAA) - and as with indies - if there's more indie devs now then ever (especially cause of layoffs let's say) - there's just going to be more shit as well there.
I don't think there is more shit now than before; it's just now AAA has to spend $200 million dollars and then sell 10 million copies to recoup their costs so the stakes are much higher if they don't hit the mark. Even smaller projects that broke even aren't safe. People loved HiFi Rush, it got rave reviews, didn't cost much to make, and reached between 2 and 3 million players but M$ killed the studio anyway. So Gamepass is killing studios as well. They're getting it from all angles.

You brought up those games.

No one is currently waxing about Giants:Citizen Kabuto, National Lampoon's Chess Maniac 5 Billion And 1, Trog, or Summer Games either.

I played it long after release and had a blast ;).

They're just trying to demonstrate to the world how to not run a company.

Shit games today are not like shit games in the past. The Simpsons Bart vs the Space Mutants on the NES was a shit game. It's a Simpsons games so of course it sold well but it was considered to be a bad game. Only 13 people made the game and probably costed $100k to make it. Compared to Wolverine which took over 500 people to make it and costed $305 million to make. You can see that a modern game can't fail as it'll be a huge financial hit. Keep in mind that Bart vs the Space Mutants wasn't even the worst game, just one that's based on a popular franchise. LJN is like modern day UbiSoft in that they produce a lot of mediocre bad games that tend to get a lot of attention, and the games tend to be based on popular movie and TV show franchises.

The only thing that changed was the amount of investment in games, in that the games become too big to fail. This is why it was Ok for Nintendo and Sony to have exclusives in the 90's but can't in 2026. If the game fails to meet sales expectations then porting it to other platforms like PC is the only way to go. Sony's hubris is they believe this won't happen to their future titles.

I suppose the one way there is more shit today is small games and slopware. Because Steam lets you publish for basically free, and Steam aside you can have a rando HTML5 web game anywhere, there is a ton more low effort slop, and just things done by people who are bad at what they do. That didn't happen in the console days.

Of course the positive flipside is that there is a much larger indy and what I might call "alt-a" market that have many gems and games which do not have wide appeal, but still get to be made and the people who love them get to play them. Once such game like that I love is Star Valor. Indy game by one dude that is a simple space loot n' shoot. Think Diablo in space. I'm gonna guess a lot of people wouldn't be interested in it. I'm not going to claim it is amazing, deep, etc, etc. But I enjoy the hell out of it, and I'm so glad that Steam allowed the dev to bring it to life.

But yes for the mainstream market, the main thing is budgets are way bigger.

Steam doesn't push the slop that gets put for sale. The front page tends to recommend positively reviewed games like DeltaRune, Oblivion Remastered, and games I never heard of like Megabonk. The king of slop is on Android and iOS. Roblox is on their recommended which I can believe with a 4.2 rating, but then you have Magic sort with a 4.5. I believe Steam does a better job at removing fake reviews than Google does. Sometimes I avoid opening up Google Play just to avoid all the recommend crap games.

The idea of porting PS5 games to PC is not a far away pipe dream. AnyPS5 aims to port PS5 games to PC. Sony's compliance isn't even needed anymore.
This is one of the benefits of the convergence of architecture as consoles become more PC-ish hardware wise. Its a matter of breaking though some of particulars of the platform (which some of the Sony leaks a few years back helped regarding) but when you're talking about some Zen2 CPU cores + RDNA2 GPU cores in something akin to an APU, its much easier to port over to PC vs when you were dealing with a PS3/X360 era CPU using a completely different architecture.

I mean mobile gaming is just ass, nothing but slop and "pay to do anything" games. Just noting that when Steam decided not to hand-curate who was allowed on, it lead to a big increase of the amount of slop widely available. Doesn't mean anyone has to, or does, buy it, though. Hasn't made my gaming experience worse and like I said, the upside of indy devs being able to reach the world is hugely worth it.

Steam's review scores do not count "received for free", "gifted", or "free weekend", reviews in it's scoring, only games that were purchased and owned. It leaves the review themselves up with a note if it was free, or refunded. This is probably one of the biggest things that reduces the ability of dev/pubs to "pad" their review scores, and keeps the Steam review scores relatively believable. It's hard to either pad or review bomb.

I mean, they do suffer from review bombing still when the Internet gets mad about something and people go and give the game negative reviews, even though they are enjoying it and keep playing it. You can see that if you look at a review and it is "Blah, blah, blah, anger about cause of the day," 20 hours at review time, 250 hours play time. But it still hurts the score.

The other issue with Steam scores is that it is a simple yes or no. Now I think that is probably the way to go for user reviews, people never use 5 star scales that well it is almost always 5 or 1 stars, but it does mean there's a lack of nuance to the scores. Something could have a 90% score, where a lot of people saying they recommend it are a pretty weak recommendation, or (more often) a lower score where the people who don't recommend it actually are probably more on the fence about it and if pushed would give it a weak recommendation.

I've been seeing announcements of new fan-made PC ports of console games with a high frequency lately. And AI is helping some of these projects in big ways. Sony probably picked a really bad time to choose to go back to PS exclusive, and might have to reverse their decision if they want to be able to cash-in on PC sales before fans port everything, themselves. AI is probably going to force changes in publishers' multi-platform strategies - strategically witholding ports as long as they like, and gate-keeping access, is no longer the luxury it has been for them. Not porting games to additional platforms ASAP could cost them big.

Decompiled games are so frequent that you'll find YouTube channels and Sub Reddits liked r/decomps dedicated to it. Also, someone did port a PS5 game to PC using AnyPS5. The stuff people are making is impressive. Resident Evil 4 is being ported to Dreamcast. Rayman Origins is ported to Android. We're past a point of no return.

The problem with emulation and such is that you need discs for that too, either playing directly from the disc or ripped disc images. Unless we have a way to rip games directly from PS5 harddrive?
I'm pretty sure this is doable; the PS5 has been jailbroken and games have been dumped. There's also some sort of CFW version, which - provided you didn't update past a certain firmware and you run strictly offline (for fear of it being noticed and your PS5 being hardware banned ) etc.. you can flash. I've not kept up on this platform particularly, however.

The PS5 has a slot for a removable SSD, so I figure you can just copy the game files there and remove it and stick it into a PC. From there, you just need the right software to extract the game. You can do this with Switch 1 and 2 games as well, assuming you have a method to decrypt the data.

If that is the case then this is good news. 👍

Of course everyone have different tastes but what makes this era different is that there is so little to look forward to, for everyone it seems like (except indie fans, they are doing better than ever). There was always the next interesting game right on the horizon and this was the case all the way from the time I was a kid with C64 and NES to the end of the Xbox360/PS3 era and to some extent PS4. Maybe I have just become jaded but now whenever I see something about a new upcoming game there is almost always something that make me roll my eyes, rub me the wrong way if not make me grit my teeth from disgust in worst cases.

Welcome to aging. I'm the same with everything (TV shows, movies, games, etc). I enjoy a lot of the games that I play and stuff that I watch but I don't get as excited about it in advance as I did when I was younger. It isn't about the quality of the games coming but my personal excitement level has dimmed from my youth.

Since I stopped playing World of Warcraft I'm trying to catch up on my game list and majority of them sucked. Mortal Shell II sucked, Last of Us Part 1 sucked, Kingdom Come Deliverance II sucked, Lies of P sucked, and etc. There were lots of OK games, but very few must play games. Resident Evil Requiem was a pretty Ok game, and one I might revisit. Doom Dark Ages was Ok but I hear the DLC is good so I might revisit it. Pragmata was boring and made to specifically make men want to have children, and no I'm not joking. Little girl serves no purpose other than the cute factor. Uncharted 4 sucked. Black Myth Wukong was pretty good but the story was confusing.

See, I liked Kingdom Come Deliverance II. I didn't think it was as good as the first but it definitely didn't suck as a game. But, it was hard to replicate the same experience when you go from a full on "newbie" fighter to a guy with some experience. The mechanics were still great but the story was a little less impactful because the character was not as fresh and raw as he was in the first game. I think they should have picked another character personally and taken a different perspective. But, either way, the game didn't suck it just didn't have the same punch as the first one.

No it is not laughable, you are just using the ostrich policy. I already defined pretty well what the sign of a great game is: That it's still being talked about and used as a measuring stick many years after its release. Most games that come out nowadays are forgotten within months. Who the heck is still talking about First Light? Nobody.
You defined what a great game is ... for you. Not everyone agrees with that metric as pointed out by all the arguing.

This is not specific to me. Plenty of games I don't like fit this metric. As for those bickering, if you can come up with a better, more neutral metric, the stage is yours.

No, what I meant is that this metric makes sense to you. It doesn't make sense for others. I wasn't trying to claim you liked every game that fit within this metric.

Granted, your metric is also based on personal likes and dislikes. Not your likes and dislikes but those of the people who loved the game and kept talking about it. Get enough volume of people talking about it long enough and that makes it great? Still screams of populism and not an actual metric independent of the likes and dislikes of players. This field is just like music, movies, and TV shows. People call lots of things great that other people can't stand and think is absolute crap. You can't separate the appreciation of any art form from the person engaging with that art form. The measure of greatness usually ends up some weird mix of sales + longevity + the likeability of the artist and probably a bunch of other factors. Some people can separate their liking the art from their appreciation of greatness and others (if not most) can't do that.

Personally, I think the whole "greatness" thing is overblown and people should just buy what they like and don't buy what they don't and stop trying to come up with reasons as to why they don't like more games now than when they were younger. The reasons for that are all over the map and can't be pinned down to any specific reason. There can be specific reasons for specific games but no obvious big ones across all games unless you're trying to really jam that square peg in the round hole.

That is also possibility, though as I am just in my forties I do not feel that old yet. Well, except for the hip that started to aching and the waist that has started to grow and getting up from the bed is starting to be a mental struggle... 😁

Pretty clear that Kingdom Come Deliverance II had a strange development cycle. The first half of the game was OK, but when you get moved to the later half of the game is when it gets bad. Besides the large amount of useless side quests, there's also a large amount of dialogue which I started to skip like mad. KCD2 has a lot to say but says nothing. Then there's Samuel who feels shoe horned and made to be hated. So many times I wonder why this prick even exists in the game? It also tracks as only 11% at best finished the game. This is why I say you usually find out too late that a game sucks and can't get a refund.

The only true to way try before you buy is to get a "community demo" (if you don't have a friend who can lend you a physical game (which means consoles) or let you borrow an entire console). I need some good hands-on time before I decide if a game is worth my money. Most of these online digital game stores have very restrictive refund policies. Devs don't always put out official demos, and when they do, who knows if it is even representative of the final product? I've experienced both good official demos where the final game was shit, and shitty demos that turned me off on what ended up being good games. When the game companies don't provide a way to try their product, the community does. And if a game is good, I will buy it no question. I have bought plenty of games after I beat them (either from borrowing games from friends, or using my library card to check out demos from the "community library"). I don't buy a car without giving it a good test drive first, but I'm supposed to buy games blindly? Naw, sorry dawg, I'm way too old for that shit. I'm not gonna let you sucker me into buying a game that I end up hating, but the very brief refund period has already passed, and you already got my money. Stand by your product, let it speak for itself, and if it is good, it will sell itself.

The only way i know to get a community demo is Fitgirl. Otherwise you can wait and look in places like G2Play to buy it for $30 which isn't worth it. The best way I can put it for KCD2 is that half the game felt like the first game, but the second half felt like different developers worked on it. The later half will take you several times more time to finish the quests and the quests are copy and paste. There's a Monastery Vineyard in the second half where you go to do work, and as far as I know there's no reward besides getting a terrible salary. When I mean work, I mean work. You don't hunt down thieves or solve a mystery. You just move bags from one place to another and pick weeds. If you want money then steal or fight any number of bandits that will attack you and pawn their gear. The problem is the game does have your ghost parents lecture you on how much of a bad boy you were, which the game can go fuck right off with that shit.

Go read the comments in this YouTube video and you'll see that people agree this quest is stupid. I prevent a lot of waste of time by Google'ing parts of games because games today feel the need to waste your time.

I'm not going to harp too much on Wolverine because I think Sony should eat shit for trying to monopolize the sale channels for video games. However I have this game. It's crazy fun especially if you're into comics. Other than that feel free to hate on Sony. Hopefully they'll learn from their mistakes regarding monopolizing game sales.

No, what I meant is that this metric makes sense to you. It doesn't make sense for others. I wasn't trying to claim you liked every game that fit within this metric.

Granted, your metric is also based on personal likes and dislikes.
By this definition every statistic is personal, even sales of a game is personal, since it is based on whether individual people liked the game enough to buy it or not.
Not your likes and dislikes but those of the people who loved the game and kept talking about it. Get enough volume of people talking about it long enough and that makes it great?
Yes, if everyone remembers a game then it is by definition memorable. I mean just look at historic figures, great people are remembered, nobodies are forgotten.
Still screams of populism and not an actual metric independent of the likes and dislikes of players.
So you are trying to argue that there can be great games that are disliked by the majority of players? I mean that's a take, I guess.
This field is just like music, movies, and TV shows. People call lots of things great that other people can't stand and think is absolute crap.
Everything is hated by at least one person, so then nothing is great? Or only the lowest common denominator is great? That'd be even wilder.
You can't separate the appreciation of any art form from the person engaging with that art form.
We are not talking about whether you personally or any one individual appreciates something, but whether that piece of art left a lasting impression to be remembered as one of the best.
The measure of greatness usually ends up some weird mix of sales + longevity + the likeability of the artist and probably a bunch of other factors.
No, it is not a mix. Something isn't great because it sold a lot, or its longevity. It sold a lot and remembered for a long time, because it is great.
Some people can separate their liking the art from their appreciation of greatness and others (if not most) can't do that.
Yes, you are demonstrating that here right now.
Personally, I think the whole "greatness" thing is overblown and people should just buy what they like and don't buy what they don't and stop trying to come up with reasons as to why they don't like more games now than when they were younger.
I knew eventually we are going to circle back to this, you just refusing to accept that games in general are lower quality now, and trying to blame the people who speak out. You want everyone to just be quiet, but as I already said that is not gonna happen. I'll keep calling out trash until morale improves or the entire AAA gaming industry crumbles to dust.
The reasons for that are all over the map and can't be pinned down to any specific reason. There can be specific reasons for specific games but no obvious big ones across all games unless you're trying to really jam that square peg in the round hole.
The ostrich ducks its head under the sand.

For me, it has ebbed and flowed for the past 20 years. Some years I'm struggling to find things I like and some years I'm backed up with games to play. For the games I've played I haven't seen a definitive decline in the quality overall. Again, it seems to ebb and flow for what I play. If what you play is currently in a dip then, yeah, you probably feel the quality is down overall across the board.

I'm glad you're having fun. For everyone who can't afford a PS5 and a $70 game, just play Ben 10 for the Nintendo DS. Turns out they copied the boss fight almost exactly.

Sony wanted an all digital PS5, they got their all digital PS5, just with all the features they did not want. 😁 PS5 has now been officially jailbroken and it is so damn easy. If you have not updated your firmware within the last couple of weeks, you can do it in few minutes. I may do it soon, hell my PS5 is just 4k uhd player at this point anyway and I do not give a damn about online features.

Niiiice! Great news! I don't have a PS5 myself, but I'm a big supporter of hard/soft-modding consoles.

It is still unstable and cause crashing for some people but it is working. I'll wait for now and hope that I do not update my PS5 by accident, gotta stay at firmware 13.60 or below for the exploit to work.

There is also a matter of some games requiring higher firmware versions in the future, digital version of of the Wolverine being a current one which isn't a loss, but in the future I guess it can be spoofed or update requests entirely blocked? We'll see, floodgates have already been opened anyway and things like emulators for the console are popping up here and there.

Sony did this to themselves. Them not porting PC games and removing physical media has painted a target on their backs. They were hoping to go forward with not only making more profits by not having physical media, but also pushing gamers to PS5 because not only you can't get any of Sony's future titles but more importantly GTA6 is only on PS5 and Xbox Series consoles. I'd have to imagine that even RockStar isn't happy with all the news of the PS5 getting even more jailbroken while having what is now an emulator KytyPS5 that is able to run commercial games like AstroBot at nearly 30 fps. To put more salt on that wound there's even a project to decomp PS5 games to PC that has successful worked on a single game.

Sony has guaranteed that the PS6 is going to be another Xbox One.

Latest KyTyPS5 is able to run Astro's Playroom at over 100fps. At some point in the video the person had to limit it to 60fps otherwise the game would be going too fast. Sony is so cooked.

Very very good to hear, cuz even when Sony was allowing their games to be ported to PC it didn't look like they were gonna bring the PS5 Astro Bot games to PC. I played through the free one that is a glorified DualSense demo on my friend's PS5. I was thinking for the full Astro Bot PS5 game I was gonna have to buy it at discount and then borrow a friend's PS5 to play. But if emulation has that covered...

You forget that Rockstar has routinely launched PC versions of GTA games roughly a year after their console releases. It's not a conspiracy — it's because the range of hardware to support is much larger.

And multiple people have told you before, but emulators don't move the needle for Sony and developers. The stats I've seen show that 14% of US gamers use online or retro game emulators... but many of those are using official emulators (think Switch Online) or those meant for previous-gen systems. PS5 emulation is almost certainly a fraction of a fraction, and by the time it gathers enough steam we'll probably be in PS6 territory.

That and you have a habit of predicting sales based on your personal preferences rather than what the general public thinks. See: declaring that the Switch 2 would likely flop.
